tranny recomendations for an 86 4wd auto to manual swap

Can someone suggest a manual transmission I should be searching for? I am wanting to get rid of the automatic in my 86 4x4 xtra 22re. I don't even care if it is a 4wd transmission, as I had to get my rear regeared to 5.29 and can't find any takers on doing the front, therefore, I don't use the 4x. I am hoping to hear what I should look for, like what years, models will bolt right up the easiest. And work well with my 5.29's. The auto is shifting horribly, and NO power. Everyone hates being behind me at a red light, cause it takes 10+ seconds to hit 50mph. It has large tires, that I like so I am will to sacrafice for the looks of the truck. Plus I live in the Phoenix area, and my life is city driving to work and back, so getting out anywhere to even drive off-road doesn't happen a lot. Thanks for any help.

A W56 5-speed is what most of the 22REs had, that and a matching RF1A transfer case and you should be set.

Great thanks! Any years to stay away from? Or can I go from 86 on? Or would it be best to find those in a certain year range? Thanks again!

Unless you use a 4wd transmission with the t-case, you will also be looking at swapping out drivelines. Atleast, in the rear. The front, if you don't ever intend to use 4wd, can be dropped out altogether. You will probably need to also modify the crossmember location. Not sure on that, but someone else should be able to say one way or the other.

W-56, FTW...........w/t-case.

(Ooops........4Crawler beat me to it)

The W-56 was used on a number of year models. You shouldn't have much trouble lining one up.

'85 onwards, 22RE engine, pickup or 4Runner should work.

I would look into what trouble it will be to change the pedal config. Is there a difference in ecu? Since the auto has the electronic adjustments that may cause some issues.

R151 would be ideal, but a WS56 is going to be most common.

Lots of documented auto to manual swaps for a 22RE online, several on this forum, Pirate4x4.com, and others. Try and see what you can find.

You will need tranny, tcase, shifters, pedals, clutch, clutch MC and slave and lots of other tidbits.

Good luck.

I used a g54 tranny (off of a 22r!) on my 22re! No problems!

Here is my personal thread....

I ditched my turd matick for a r151 out of a previous 86 turbo'd truck I had, also kept the turbo'd manual transfer case since the rl51 has a 23 spline and the regular 4 bangers have a 21 spline output. definatly go with a gear driven tcase behind whatever trans u go with. the ecu out of the auto truck will still work but you won't need the ect computer. to bypass the neutral safety switch just plug a jumper in the wiring harness below the intake plenum. It'll be the white female plug with 3 wires. just jump the 2 larger wires.
