I have one in my 4Runner... is that close enough?

It's a Uniden 510XL. Pretty much slid right in once I Dremelled out the rear of the dash pocket. It will depend on what size your CB is on whether or not it will fit.

I also got a 90 degree adapter from Radio Shack for the antenna cable at the back of the unit to reduce clearance issues.

I've seen several installed in the ashtray & I saw a write-up about how to do it, it was simple & straight forward; I think the writer said they had to cut the plastic in the back after removing the tray but it wasn't a crazy mod or anything. If I run across it again I'll post up.

Maybe this will help, it's not the one I was thinking of but the FJ80 is nearly identical to the 4Runner:

CB Install

you should use a SWR meter and tune your antenna. also to place the antenna in an optimum ground plane location. if you operate it when its high swr, you can smoke your radio. an ideal swr is 1.1

A "forerunner" is the guy that doesn't hear you say "fore!" on the golf course and goes running out of the way at the last second

well, the truck already had a cb in it.....has a permanent roof mounted base that you can screw on the wilson 1000 antenna and 4 ft whip antenna...sucks when you foget in parkades specially cos the truck itself seems to barely get under the roof joists

the original cb ( a realistc) blew up....doesnt transmit or recieve anymore...so i got a uniden...this one fits in the ashtray location...

where does one get a swr meter anyway...can you buy them from the source / radio shack?

this is why you need to use an swr meter. the same thing will happen to your new one.
if the existing equipment is old, replace it.
use 18' of RG-8x (a.k.a. mini 8) coaxial cable, and a fender mount, with a 102" whip. you can use RG-58, which is cheaper, but you will get longer life and better results with the mini 8.

you can buy a swr meter at radio shack for 20 bucks. instructions are included. or, i can explain it after you get it, if you dont understand.

or, if your radio shack doesnt carry it, John at http://cb-shopper.com/ will help you get every thing you need for any application
