Sub installation option and system upgrade

95 4R Sub installation option and system upgrade
This is an example of a low-ish cost, under $500, audio solution that bumps up the existing factory system. I didn't want a sub box floating around taking up cargo space and screaming PLEASE TAKE ME! Since my installation, some components have been discontinued but I'm sure replacement components are available at equal or lesser cost. Clink link below to see pix.
New audio components:
Pioneer TSG1044 4" front speakers-$40 (these were blown, all other stock speakers still worked well)
Sony CDXGT820IP deck-$200 (powers tweets and mids)
Rockford Fosgate Punch Amp P325.2-$100 (powers sub)
Kicker Sub CVT651-$70 (this was the lowest profile sub I could find that fit within the existing space)
Misc. wire and materials-$60

- A sub driver that's thin enough - enclosure would
- Amp for the sub
dvaldi Thanks for sharing! Would appreciate your observation on how much bass you get from the sum-amp combo.
- Is it just enough to hear/feel clean bass above road noise, or
- is it plenty so people outside can hear what you're listening to?
TIA

Thanks RAD, the lowest profile sub available at the time is listed above including the amp. This is a good link for the latest Kicker sub specs... http://www.kicker.com/CompVT_CVT651. Looks like you can pick one up from Best Buy. According to the specs, you will need a mount depth of 3" + 1" (enclosure 1/2" OSB X2) for a total depth of 4". I gained an extra 1/2" by cutting a hole in the back enclosure panel and glued/screwed a thin steel plate to seal the back panel hole. This reduced the overall depth to 3 1/2" but the sub itself is proud by about a 1/2". SOOOO, 4" total vs 4 1/2" to clear the OEM plastic cover plate. 1/2" made all the difference for fit/finish. Its a 6 1/2" sub, does a great job but certainly not a 10" or 12" boomer. You can hear it outside the car and it also vibrates my rear view mirror. Just a nice clean thump.

I cant get to the sub box without removing interior panels...BUT...this will help you tailor the size of box specific to your vehicle.
1.Check to see if you have a minimum of 4" depth behind interior plastic side trim panels.
2. Kicker CompVT CVT651's require a minimum sealed box volume of .2 CU/FT or 346 CU/IN.
3. Measure available H and W in your rig, leave some space to maneuver box into place.
4. Start doing the math, multiply your inside box height and width dimensions by 2.5. This is the minimum depth needed to accept the sub (this includes cutting a hole the back panel). i.e. 14"Hx10Wx2.5"=350 CU/IN or 15.5"Hx9"Wx2.5"=348 CU/IN and so on...
5. I constructed my sub box using 1/2" Hardboard or Masonite. 2.5" top, bottom and side panels with front and rear panels screwed/glued to the 1/2" face. If properly constructed, you will end up with a box size of H?xW?x3.5"D.

insane,
If you ever decide to go this route, let's compare notes. I'm in S.D., too.

You are welcome....What happened last night RAD? Manning looked like his old self, or maybe it was Rivers problem. I know this is "off topic" but had to raz you guys! Cant say much with Detroit as our only hope.

A cheap Sony Xplode 1000 watt amp. Puts out closer to 800 watts max and 400 watts RMS on a single bridged channel and that's what I'm running it on; that's actually what the sub is rated at, and I still have to have the gain set at about 60% or I get distortion...
