'91 4runner - Lets talk stereos.
#1
When I bought my 4runner I made it a crucial point to fix the broken stereo and replace the nasty old speakers.
So after a quick trip to the neighborhood best buy, where i picked up a new deck and 2 sets of speakers, I began to tear apart my dash and side pannels to install them.
I found a naaaasty rats nest of wiring and got to tear it all out and clean it up nice.
Now I would like to discuss what i found! for the rear speakers i was confused by what appeared to be a 1991 sub/amp box.
Someone please tell me what on earth it is?
what i've gathered so far, is that IF it works still it might be nifty for the new speakers i put in, but i feel like it would take some sort of crazy rewiring and harnessing because as it stands there isn't any apparent way to hook them up to my stereo. thoughts?

If you're talking about the 5" or so speakers that are sitting in their own little boxes back there, I pulled mine out and tossed them. Then I built a small baffle out of MDF that was big enough to hold 6 3/4" speakers and ran a separate set of wires to them. You have to be careful, though, because if I remember correctly, they are powered and you don't want to just cut the wires and leave them live back there.

Yes that's exactly what I'm talking about. However my fix was simply to disconnect the harness from the box, leaving that all in tact. I drove a screwdriver through the harness mounts holes on top to run the +/- wires through, then ran my own wire to the front under the trim and carpet.
I guess i'm just curious if there's any way to make them functional again?
@Bemice
No pictures atm however it's pretty standard, it's about 1' tall, 6" wide and like 4" deep. speaker mounts about the center.
Inside it there's an insulator behind the speaker, some sort of circuitboard on the bottom, and then a vent.
I'll deff get a picture next chance i get.
