Eeeewwwwwweeeeee! NOT BABYSITTING!

I don't think we were formally introduced at that event, I came up to your earlier in the day, but you were in the midst of trying to herd cats and organize a run I remember standing in line for those incredible ribs, but I couldn't pick you out of a line up

Looks great Rob (and company!).

Where did you come out on height vs. the old IFS setup?

Thanks!

We left the back alone so we could compare. I was just a bit nose down orginally, but now I am slightly nose up. So, all told, it sits about 10" over stock.

We are currently looking at repositioning the rear spring hangers in the front, so we can go with a shorter shackle and lose a bit of altitude. It's "pull me over high" looking at the moment... I would like to get it down around 8-9" over stock.

hehehhe I hadn't even noticed that. But I hate to put a parking lot shot there, so it might have to wait a little while... It's pretty amazing to me at the moment that it moves at all, so a parking lot shot would be okay for me, but I don't think that is the image I want everyone to remember who I am by

Perhaps, but I hate to gain much more altitude, so I have to get that under control first.

Re: Tacoma Solid Axle Swap

hey Rob what up man, looking good, glad you are almost done.
did you get a new d-shaft? what gears are u putting itn?
hey i saw the pics of your shocks mounts and i see you only have around 6" of rod left, if that is so, i don't think you got enought, your pic looks just the way mine look, and when i flex it all the way there is not enougt rod, so i had to extend mines. my shocks are 14" of travel i don't know what you got. just be carefull when you flex it, you don't want to bottom out those shocks. if you need a pic of mine let me know so you can see what i did.
later and congrats...
Oz.

Yeap!! I already got a $75 bucks ticket for being that high. it sucks money down the drain.

later.

Hey Dude!

We have about 4" of shaft showing at rest. We have been watching it carefully and are doing the wire-tie trick to measure travel. I am going to keep an eye on it for the next couple of days and see what comes of it, but since we are not using all the downtravel that the shock has available, I will likely just go to a slightly shorter shock if it comes to that. I also need to investigate some bump stops before I negative arch the springs too many times... Ahhhhhh, the fine tuning part... hehehhe

We spent yesterday moving the shackle hangers back so we could go with a shorter shackle. I was a bit too nose high and we had 7" shackles, any shorter caused them to lay back against the frame during compression. Now I am level to slightly nose down and the shackles are down to 5 1/4" in length, with no risk of laying back or inverting, so we are pretty happy there.

Tonight, we did final adjustments on the steering and headed out for the freeway. It was nice and solid up to about 80 or so, which all the faster I could see myself doing, (passing in a 70 zone). After that, we loaded up my tools and I drove it home.

Impressions; it rides BETTER than the truck did with the SAW's and Trail Disaster lift. A lot better. The front end is quieter. Instead of hearing axles spinning, I hear the tires on the road. It's still got a bit of wander that the steering stabilizer and tightening everything down did not cure, but I have driven vehicles that were 10 times worse in that department. It's not as crisp steering as the IFS was, but it's something you get the hang of. The brakes work fine, but I would like to do some more there to raise the pedal and firm things up. Perhaps I can find a larger master cylinder that can be adapted or perhaps I can go to multi cylinder slaves. It sits at EXACTLY the same height that I had before the swap, just a bit more level.

The power bleeder ChrisCo got in really did the job. The difference is amazing.

Overall, I am glad I did it. There's some dialing in to be done and I am looking forward to phase II where it becomes four-wheel drive again, but otherwise I am quite pleased.

Can't wait to see it in action sometime Rob.
Good luck getting the rest all dialed in.

I took a stock '84 'Yota truck for a drive a few Saturdays back, it was fun.

No power steering, it had 33s on it, and tripple shocks up front, and the 5 speed.
It drove nice for no power steering, and the 22R engine pulled hard.

It needs to be regeared, but it still drove very nice.

I will be dropping by Doxon in the morning to watch the expressions on their faces... that should give them something to talk about for a while...

Hmmm... an '84. Thinking about a trail rig?

I'll second that. So much so that I'll take a moment to get in a little plug for 'em (and I very rarely plug for anything )

This little pressure bleeder setup I got is the Universal Power Bleeder setup from http://www.motiveproducts.com. It cost $49.95, and (so far) appears to be much better quality than those crappy little "one man brake bleeders" (of any sort) you get from places like Schmucks. REALLY taking my time, and including the time spent reading the instructions, it took about an hour to bleed (or pretty much flush, in this case) the entire rig... And, best of all, I didn't spill a drop of brake fluid in the process (unlike when we tried those stoopid little (cheapie version) one man bleeder valves (no name version of the Speedy Bleeders) from Schmucks (which just pumped the fluid out even though it was so tight we were afraid we were going to round off the head or strip the threads).

Anyway, there's my plug for 'em. If you order from 'em, be careful of choosing 2nd day air... I placed my order on Wednesday, and it didn't ship out 'till late Thursday, which means for 2 business days to ship, it didn't show up 'till today (Monday).

ChrisCo

Rob-

Congrats to you all for getting the swap to where it's at today, and good luck with the rest of the dial-in. I would like to see the truck someday. Do you think I could meet you sometime in second half of December or early January? I wanna kick the tires and see if they fall off!

I have been meaning to get one of those pressure bleeders for a while. Maybe I need to put it on my Dear Santa list, LOL.

I have watched the metamorphosis of your Taco and it has been an interesting thing to view and even more interesting to read about the process. I was wondering if you would pardon my ignorance and explain the quoted statement. Thanks!

I believe phase two means when Rob gets his front driveshaft built and installed.
