285 v 305

What is the difference between a 285/75/16 and a 305/70/16? I thought they were both about the same, but how come the 305's are like $30-$40 more?

285/75r16 = 32.8x11.2 taller, skinner
305/70r16 = 31.8x12 shorter, fatter.

You're just a slight bit off...

285/75r16 = 32.831 x 11.22
305/70r16 = 32.811 x 12.01

295/75r16 = 33.421 x 11.32

The 285 and 305 are essentially the same height, but the 305 is 3/4" wider.

conversion info... crash course

285/75/16

285 is the section width (WIDTH)
75 is the ratio of width to height (SIDEWALL)
16 is the rim

to convert to normal numbers... divide the 285 by 25.4(cm/in) this gives you 11.22

take 11.22 and mulitply it by the ratio or .75 this is 8.42

Multiply 8.42 times 2 (there are two sidewalls to count) and add 16 (rim)

This gives you a 32.83x11.22R16 Tire

Now like any 35x12.50R15, this varies my mfg, but its a good start. Most mfgs have size specs on their website.
