The '96 LC has more problems...

Alright, you guys may remember when I fixed the EGR on my step-mom's '96 LC. Well now the CE light is back. I know the TB needs to be cleaned but I'm not sure if that would throw a CE code. Is there any way that I can pull the codes without having to take it somewhere and have them do it?

And now for the real reason I am making this thread, my dad said he saw some gear oil on the ground in the garage. Does the transfer-case have gear oil in it or ATF like mine? Where would be a common leak for gear oil on the LC?

I haven't had a chance to look at it yet so all I can do is ask my dad questions but he's too lazy to get under there and look at it.

Thanks for the help.

T-case has gear lube. Leak source could be speedo O-ring discussed here.

Thanks for the link. I bet that is the problem. The instructions in that thread seemed pretty involved for something I've never done before. Without a FSM, I'm not sure if I will tackle the job. I'll reread that thread some more and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the help.

Post Update

I finally got to look at the LC. The leak isn't coming from the speedo cable. It seems to be coming from where the transfer case meets the transmission. But the leak is very slight so I'm not worried about it.

I cleaned the TB too. Wow, that thing was completely black behind the butterfly. Anyways, I reset the code and it hasn't come back on. So I guess that fixed it.

Thanks for the help.

Post Newest Update...

The LC is currently on a 3000 mile trip to the New England area. All was good for the first leg of the trip. The CE light came on again. The stealership pulled the code and said she needed a new cat ...morons. Anyways, it looks like it's probably time for a new O2 sensor. That's about right because it has about 145K miles on it. It runs great except for that stupid CE light that keeps coming on.

The leak you are talking about between the tranny and the transfer case is a common problem. Kinda like an old VW, always leaving its mark.

By the way, to comment on your sig...why don't you just take the LC?

I never thought about buying the LC from my step-mom. I guess I always could but it's just not the kind of vehicle that I would see myself driving I guess. Plus it gets worse gas mileage than my 4runner. Right now, gas is just too high. I'll think about it a little.

I'm going to change my sig because I haven't been impressed at all with the 3 Chevys that I've driven lately.
