This week I've done a little back and forth pm-ing about sliders that made me remember how difficult is was for me to decide what length I wanted.
For anyone who it might matter to, I chose 65". I just have the little chrome trim, not flares. Here's what 65" looks like:
Front:
Rear:
Okay, back to the awesome manual hubs and (eventual) locking rear dif.......
Hadn't thought of those though I've seen a lot of posts from people who love them. I'll give them a thought too. I'll be staying with 285/75r16s. Thanks for the person recommendation too, I would be sure to mention your name should I go there.
Almost forgot. Managed to drain the starter battery so low it wouldn't do anything. Not even the power locks. Pushed the button on the dash to connect the two batteries and the truck started right up. The Blue Sea ACR didn't allow the house battery to be drained by the starter battery and I was able to use the house battery when I needed it.
From what I seen on the news looked like the weather got a little rough in your area, hope all is well for you there. Yeah for living in tornado alley. We had a couple in our area as well but not as bad as it could of been.
Misty had just planted a few things in the garden and was concerned with us getting hail but it didn't happen.
Just getting caught up on your thread. You get a first gen, send it my way, I may have to send you my 3rd gen. lol So far it is holding together.
I have lived in several cities and St. Louis is one of the biggest sports towns. They really back their teams.
RW, who me? Rock, blues, oldies, bluegrass, metal....little bit o' this n that.
We didn't get hit bad at all Terry, You might've gotten it a bit worse. No hail, but either way the plants are still stuck on the back porch 'cause of my truck distraction. Glad to hear Misty's were safe.
The Blues hrt4me. Well, they did have a good season before we hit the play-offs at any rate. Not complaining. Not that I have much time for watching 'em, I still try to keep up a little.
Today I double checked for pre-wiring and removed the ABS light (Taco spindles = no abs), which I will put back when I eventually move the hub to the 4Runner spindles (when bearings are replaced). I stuck the bulb in the rr diff lock light place (there's one there!) and then looked desperately for any sort of pre-wiring. Nope. Wasn't there before and it's still not there now. Maybe next time.
While I had the cluster out I cleaned both the outside and inside.
A lot of the smudges were on the inside.
A little cleaner.
I also dusted/cleaned up the light bulb and plastic ring that fits around the ignition switch. That's as close as I'm going to get to house keeping.
It's gotta be the right sort of metal and in the right sort of mood.
Hahaha, spider bling. Mine is still living, for awhile he was behind the right rear panel and would come out to visit the kid. Now he (or someone like him) is up in my driver door panel. He likes to walk around on the side window and windshield while I'm driving.
Fixed the trip odometer. BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT THIS BE AWARE! There are 4 teensy copper wires soldered to tiny posts.
The trip odo sits over the top of this. I've replaced mine with great luck- but yeah, stinky tiny wires. After so many years of vibration I'm sure anything could cause them to jump ship and break.
A hummingbird could fly by. Someone could sneeze in the next town. A dog could fart. Mine just did.
Your speedo will not work if breakage occurs. Caveat Emptor! Well, okay, if you're going to do this be super careful.
Do this with your own will and at your own risk. That's actually true of anything posted in here....or anywhere.
Okay.
Unbolt the 4 bolts that hold the bottom panel on (under the steering wheel, houses the fuse access panel).
The trim around the ignition carefully pops loose.
Unscrew the 4 screws that hold the rest of the trim around the instrument cluster. Two in front and above the cluster and one at the bottom of the trim on each side.
Unscrew the 4 screws that holds the cluster in.
Undo the 3 plugs on the back, pushing in the tabs to release each of them.
Pull cluster out, carefully unhook the clear plastic lens from its various points on the cluster.
The black plastic trim comes off the same way as the clear plastic did.
Unscrew the tiny screws on either side of the speedometer needle.
Carefully pull off the needle. There may be a better method, but I don't know what it it.
Unscrew the 4 screws on the back of the cluster that are directly behind the speedometer. This is the donor I borrowed the trip odo from:
One arm of the bracket that pushes the gear out of the way and allows the cams for each number to reset is broken. It's the one to the immediate right of the white gear. Cruddy pic and I know I'm not explaining that right, it's kinda difficult to articulate with thingamajiggers and whatchamacallits.
The trip odo pops right off, just gently squeeze the tabs together on either side and push up. In the below pic it's already halfway out.
See the tiny spring on the needle post? The tinier copper winding? Take care.
And snap the unbroken one in its place.
I only nabbed it because somebody had already torn the cluster it was in apart and had broken parts of the cluster in their effort to get I don't know what. Luckily they didn't destroy what I wanted. Yes, that other one says 77,xxx miles. No, I must have a touch of Volvo-itis because I would only be tempted to replace my odo with one of a higher mileage.
And another pic I found interesting...
The auger screw is what seems to run the trip and regular odo. The trip odo in this pic is not pushed down into place yet...
While I was in the cluster I:
Used Toyota# 82998-24180 to add a connection to that rr diff lock light I'd found earlier (No, still no prewiring has magically appeared yet. I'll keep checking) Red wire, shinyblackdeer called it pin 6 but if I'm reading this right it's actually pin 8.
The 96's front sway bar got some longer links- s'posed to fit a 2nd gen 4Runner rear:
No, I can't afford the quick disconnects. The hubby used one of my old ones to replace a broken link on the 99.
I did drive it around disconnected for several days. It wasn't horrible, but I didn't like it.
