Hi Hab! Just a quick checking in. It's 80 and no wind here so I'll go chase some fish. My truck is still doing it's thing, running good. Hope all is well over your way with good weather too.
Weather's been great all work week with storm threats all weekend the past couple weeks. Waiting for it to dry out enough to put some plants and seeds in the garden!
Haven't been doing much truck-wise of late. Did put a switch in so I could turn the center console gauge lights off when I didn't want all that light at night (and on if I needed to see them). Waiting impatiently for summer break so I can deal with the cv boots. Next week!
Otherwise everything on the 96 is doing good and currently running well. The 99 is due for a timing belt but I think the hubby's doing that one.

Keep in mind that your experience may differ- the 96 is wearing cv shafts out of a 96 Tacoma with manual hubs. I know the shafts are different, but I am not pulling one of my 4Runner spares to see how different.
The most difficult part was getting the stupid shaft out of the dif. It was being obnoxious. Once I got them off a screwdriver tapped under the boot clamp ends easily persuaded them to pop off. I did all this over a cheap rectangular oil pan because it's, um, messy.
After I got the boots off (utility knife) I marked the shaft and tripod so it can all go back together the way it came off. Pay attention to the tripod, it can only go on one way.
Then I looked for the snap-ring that's supposed to be at the end of the shaft, holding the tripod (that thing with three rollers that's prolly called something else) on. Nothing. Nada. Hmmm...
Below the tripod on the shaft is a c-clip. Take it off.
You can then push tripod down the shaft a little and the other snap-ring will be visible. Take that off and the tripod will now come off.
Cleaned up everything as best as I could (yuck!). The Toyota kit is nice, with new snap-rings, grease, boots and clamps. Pay attention to the clamps, they are ready to go and sized for each boot. My pic isn't too good because I've got the boots switched. The inner boot is more rubbery, has fewer lobes and goes with the lighter colored grease and the bigger of each size clamps go with it. The outer boot is more plasticky, has more lobes and the darker grease and the smaller of each size clamps go with it.
The shaft with electrical tape to keep the end from damaging the boot. Outer boot first, then clamp with proper small clamp. Add grease to other end and clamp with proper large clamp. Put small clamp for inner boot on, then slide boot on.
Slide c-clip onto shaft down past its seat. Align tripod with your marks and slide onto shaft. Put snap-ring on, slide tripod upward until you can seat the c-clip. Align boot's shape with the tripod, then clamp boot with the small clamp.
On this one I filled the boot with grease and somehow managed to get the tulip on without spilling any. Slide the tulip on and clamp and done.
I know I'm not using the right names for some of this stuff. If anyone feels like enlightening me I can change 'tulip' and 'tripod' to correct wording.
Just compared kball's tulip joint to mine- they are different in how they're retained.

There is brass colored things in there....but no visible damage, must be between bearing and retainer or whatever that thing is called? If anyone's got a clue I'd most appreciate a hint or ten.

I vaguely seem to recall you mentioning something or other about a wee bit o' grease.
Regarding those shavings I need to get the tool to take that retainer off and see what there is to see. Amazon's got it cheap. I don't know if the needle bearings the cv shaft uses are riding on brass or what.
Good to know on tulip and tripod. I'll have to go back and change them to doohickeys and whatchmathingers.
it's dead, Jim. The redtop Optima, that it. Very slow to crank this morning when we did a donut run (National Donut Day, I kid you not) and no love at all trying to leave the donut store.
It's almost like it knew I bought a new one yesterday (on-line though, $70 cheaper than anywhere around here so couldn't justify the locals this time) and await its arrival sometime next week.
No worries, pushed the battery connect switch and the yellowtop got it going so we could get home to consume donuts. Guess that yellowtop will be getting a bit of a workout over the next few days. The ACR is disconnecting the batteries as soon as the truck is shut off- that ol' redtop is done finished through over kaput dead. Glad the Blue Sea 7622 won't allow the starter to drain the house battery!
9 years old. No complaints. Sure wish they made them that good now, though it doesn't sound like it from the sound of a running feet exodus towards the Odyssey batteries. Time will tell, I suppose.
Just catching up on your thread. I think the bird that got your runner is the same one that got mine, the jerks.
Looks like Missouri may have a great gardening season this year. I checked our squash the other day and nothing. Today, literally overnite I found 10 getting ready to come on.
Wow Terry, look at that squash go! It's been so cool but finally everything got planted and it's starting to get going, but nothing even near as advanced as that!
Piddlin' around today. One of the switches stopped working so it got taken apart and a spring got mildly stretched for better contact and it's all fine and dandy now.
New battery coming tomorrow! Hoping it's in good shape...some things are worrisome to ship. Still, that $70 will net me some much needed new shoes. You'd be surprised at how much ribbing a person will get when their toe is sticking out of the right and part of a foot out the left!

New start battery. Optima 34r red top to replace the just over 9 year old (or is it 10?) red top. Wish they were still solidly that long-lasting....
Ordered from Streetside Auto at 2pm June 4th, Fed Ex dropped it off today, 2 days later. Impressed with the speedy shipping, the freshness (built 6/15), impressed with the shipping container.
Popped it in and life is once again good good good. Thank goodness for the dual set-up or I would have had to have been careful to park on hills these past couple days.
Spent Friday afternoon taking the bumper and hitch off the 96, hubby did likewise on the 99.
Spent Saturday watching paint dry!

4xInnovations rear bumper with tire carrier. Adam was a pleasure to work with, he answered my questions and was very helpful.
The tranny jack is useful once again. Tolerances were tight (in a good way) and the holes lined up perfectly. We needed to drill 2 holes in the frame of each truck. The foremost upper part of the wing is coming in contact with the bodies on both sides, will have to wait and see if frame vs body flex causes issues. We figured we can use washers to tilt the contact area away from the body if it comes to that.
Overall I am impressed with construction and fit, would not hesitate to buy from 4xInnovations again.
I still have to put my trim back on and I think I will be able to keep using my rear mud flaps as well. Oh, and wire up the license plate lights.
