Hey, oil changes are good!

I see you are approaching the 300,000 mile mark!

Agreed!

Sneakin' up on it, can't believe I've driven it 177,693 miles.
With no internal engine work.
So far.

If anybody happens to have a 4th gen 4runner handy and convenient I need a few measurements off the rear gas tank strap:
The length of each segment end to bend, bend to bend and bend to other end. Also the width would be nice. I'm still trying to find one in a parking lot somewhere with the owner near it so I can ask to crawl underneath. I think it may be the right length to raise my 3rd gen tank....just need to check if the bends are compatible and make sure it's not too short.
At some point I'll just crawl under some random truck and be glad we don't live in Texas because I'd like to live at least a little longer. There's somebody a work that sometimes drives one in, I may have to catch them sometime.

Yep, project uptank is in the thinking stage.

Also Happy Holidays everybody!!

We had an iner-planetary (hey, the kid did the spelling) box of mystery this year. I think the husband was relieved it was not a vacuum cleaner and a little alarmed that it turned out to be a hand truck.
He never knows what's going to be in the box, poor husband.

Oh yeah. He needed the hand truck because the other gift was in the basement and it weighed 70#. I got it down there but if no hand truck it would be staying down there.
(it might have been a winch)

Happy New Year all!!

Still pondering the gas tank. Too cold!!

Hi Habanero,
Want to thank you for the detailed procedure on how to fix the hatch light sensor. (in posts 4xxs)
After living with the door showing always as shut and light not working for over two years, today since I had to lube the locking mechanism and since the back hatch was already gutted out I took the latch out and went home with the grinder and sure enough one of the two cables was cut. I re soldered and now it's working as it should, very satisfying little job.
Thanks,
Fernando

Fernando- SO COOL! Thank you so so much for letting me know something here helped you. It's the whole reason I keep writing all this stuff down, makes me happy when it's useful to others.

96 4Runner
Project Uptank: exploring ways to lift the tank on a limited budget.

Finally found a 4th gen 4Runner to crawl under. I measured the rear tank strap but unfortunately one of the sections is too long. The strap itself is also too wide.
My next victim will be a 2nd gen Taco. Its straps will be about the same width and one of the two has a similar style mounting, just got to get the measurements from bend to bend.

Not much elsewise. The 99 sneezed out the front o2 sensor because super-rusted nuts. No big deal, the hubby found the gasket in the skid plate, couple of new nuts and back in business. It's been cold, a stripey kitty got into the veggie garden (the smelly sort), still working on a down-to-the-studs bathroom remodel. Still. STILL.
Hope all is well with everybody.

Oh, no! Not the stripey kitty!

I have been helping my dad with an almost "down-to-the-studs" bathroom remodel as well. It started out as re-pipe the house project (we had a plumbing company replace all of the galvanized steel water pipes with PEX), then turned into a bathroom remodel. Almost 4 months later, we are almost done. We just need to paint the trim. It only took the plumbers one day to re-pipe and another day to patch the walls.... I guess we are just very slow. Haha!
Projects like that seem to take MUCH longer than you originally anticipated.

Good luck with Project Uptank!

Thanks old87yota! I've looked at and dismissed raising the tank back when I pulled the skid to paint it....gonna work much harder at figuring this time. With the extra vehicle the 4Runner can be down for as long as it needs. The angled mount in the front and the pin mount in the back is what I'm working with. I've got some other thoughts going on too, but really need to drop the tank for more info. Hands on, all that.

The bathroom started with needing to replace the tub and toilet, circa 1954. It required some tile destruction. That uncovered some water damage to the cement behind the wall. Things kinda really unraveled from there.

Annnnnd the rear of the slightly bowed in ( ) gas tank is supported by a cargo strap, the skid plate is dropped. The gas filler gasket is off (2 wire retainers, nut that holds the door catch). Waiting for the b'laster to do the work on the one bolt that isn't coming out easy. Don't feel like forcing it.

Also tested the valves on the charcoal canister after hearing a wheezy whining. One is fine, the other is out of spec. The switching part seems intermittent at this point, worked this morning. So need to locate a 'new' vsv. May take the multimeter to the boneyard and nab one from there for now.

Okay, off to see if the b'laster has done its thing.

Tank is down. So far the biggest problem is the brace at the back and above the tank. Wasn't expecting that to be there, it's going to limit what I wanted to do with it. The tank itself looks pretty good, all shiny on the inside, a little rust around the fuel pump mount. The sock is pretty dirty. I parked it when the needle was in the middle of the 'E', it was still running fine but I don't think I had much go left. Poured about a gallon of gas out of the tank after I got it down, I was expecting at least a couple of gallons as it's supposedly an 18 gallon tank and with the needle where it's at it probably won't tank more than 16ish.

Well, I'll contemplate that rear brace, but without the capabilities (welding) I'm kinda stuck. Turns out the front end would be easier to lift than the back. Will spend more time underneath it in contemplation mode. Will also try to illustrate with pictures soon.

So just how important is the rear driveshaft? The front corner of the gas tank? The entire back half of the gas tank?
Project uptank is looking like project nopetank.
I'm pretty sure Toyota had a gas tank hanging about the place so they built a truck around it.

Fuel pump. There is an access hole under the left rear seat. It's just access, not fuel pump assembly removal. It's both too far forward and too small.

Top 2 connectors are for the fuel pump, bottom three are the sending unit.

The fuel gauge sending unit, can you tell it's been in there for 22 years?

The fuel pump sock. Not bad for so many years, I think.

New fuel pump in, new gaskets, new filler hose, new return hose, new strap. Tank is mostly installed, but it got dark.
Still need to address the vsv problem. Couldn't find a good one at the junkyard. I should swap the working one out of the '99.

Speaking of the '99, today the hubby noticed the gas tank strap on it has also rusted in half. He'll just be replacing the strap though.

Toyota
77169-60010
Suction Tube Gasket $9.41 (gasket between fuel pump assembly and gas tank. Denso also offers this, but it's cheaper at EB Toyota)
77213-35300
Connector Hose $42.94 (rubber part of the tank filler hose)
83320-80331
Sending Unit $132.97 (fuel gauge sending unit)
77601-35060
Fuel Tank Mount Strap $39.05 (holds the back end of the gas tank up, comes with the cushion. Dorman and Spectra offers the strap as well, without cushion.)
77179-26011
Tube Assembly Gasket $2.11 (gasket for the gas tank evap return)
77310-35080
Filler Cap $19.91 (gas cap, comes complete with o-ring)
77316-16010 Filler Cap Gasket $11.38 (weird-shaped rubber o-ring for the gas cap. It got used on the '99)

Denso 950-0100 Fuel Pump (comes complete with fuel pump sock and bits to install in fuel pump assembly)

There was a little rust, mostly around the fuel pump assembly mount. I covered the tank holes and removed it with a little wire brush. Afterwards I repainted everything to hopefully prolong the life of the tank.
Here it is completed and set up to be reinstalled.

New and old sending unit. The old one actually still works, but it seemed prudent to replace it based on rust, age, and wear.

And I did confirm that the Walker muffler I bought in September is indeed leaking from the seam. A lot.

So next up:
New muffler for the '96
New gas tank strap for the '99

96 4Runner 297,589 miles

Filling up the tank today, checked fluids as usual, checked under the oil cap as I sometimes do. Found about 1/2" of the scary white gook of evil in it this time. Not losing coolant. No sweet white smoke. Fuel economy is really bad at the moment but I don't think that's this issue. My work is only a couple of miles each way so I'm thinking it's from all those cold engine short drives!

VSV valve. It's bad. Replace valve for $75? Replace canister which comes complete with both valves for $260? Steal canister with working vsv out of the 99 and not tell the hubby? Would this be an mpg issue? So far I vote for that last one! The 99 would at least get upset and set a code if there was one that needed setting. The 96 is so stingy with codes.

Truck seems to run fine but slightly hard start after sitting and what sounds like a muffled small back-fire when it does.

Rear o2 graph nearly matches the front one, that's not right. Rear o2 is not even a year old and the front a/f has about 60,000 miles on it.

It's really frustrating because no codes other than the 3 p0420 codes several months apart. No pending codes.

If any ideas I'm sure listening. I suppose it can be a whole lot of things. I'll probably re-install my old maf when I get the chance, just to see what happens. It did run a couple of months and 4 tanks with no mpg issues when I changed the MAF. Maybe test the coolant temp sensor. Check the plugs. And?

After replacing the muffler the rear o2 graph started acting more like it was supposed to, which is weird because muffler??? What? The muffler is way behind the sensors and the old one was leaky, not clogged.

The rear's gone back to weird over-active graph. Yesterday the front sensor went flat-line on the way to work while the rear graph kept working. It was back to usual in the afternoon.

When it gets warm enough or I start feeling better I'm going to start poking at the wiring, checking for any issues and then while watching the graphs. Stupid cold. Stupider flu.

I might be overthinking this.....maybe I need a(nother) hobby.
