Turbo Noisy
I have a 1992 2.4 turbo diesel EFI ssr_x surf. The turbo is extremely noisy, should it be that way. It is a loud whistling sound. Also, should these engines come with a turbo timer? I was told I damaged my last turbo because I cut my engine without letting the turbo cool.

That loud whistling sound is the turbo spooling up. So, yes it is a little noisy, at least mine was. As far as a turbo timer, get one installed so that you don't have to sit in your car for a minute before shutting it off. That is something you should do, especially after hard driving. It will save your turbo by letting the oil drain back into the pan and preventing it from cooking in the tube. Of course my turbo 4runner was a gasoline engine and not a diesel.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll have to live with it. I was expecting more power when it is engaged, but I don't really get any. The mechanic says the engine is throwing oil back into the air cleaner, so I may have to replace the rings and solve the power problem.

It's not really necessary to idle for a couple of minutes before turning it off all the time. Just start driving nice and easy a few minutes before getting home. That's usually sufficient for cooling down the turbo.

Problem solved
I got the 'lazy' problem solved. It seems that there was a malfunction in the 'brain-box', which was not activating the turbo. It appears that while the turbo was comming on, it was not doing annything with the power it produced. The electrican repaired it and now the light works, comes on at about 2200 rpm, and the power is increased instantly.

Just replaced a 2.4 turbo D with a 2.8 TD. Only two weeks later the turbo bearings failed. It was to damaged to repair. A new turbo cost me in Holland about 700 USD. What's the price in the States for parts like this?

I can't resist turbo discussion. Turbo timers are a good idea, but like it's been said, not a life-and-death mod. My '88 Mazda 626 with a 2.2L turbo four runs great -- with 205,000 km -- no noise or whatever.
On the car's sunvisor, I'll paraphrase what Mazda recomends: don't go ape-˟˟˟˟ on a morning-cold turbo and don't put it away wet after going ape-˟˟˟˟ with a crackling-hot turbo.
