I use the design member bugs1961 came up with. It's simple and with a 2' long leg it gives plenty of holding power.

Ok, I'm off for the night... Alarm is set for 215am. :-)

Yep..I can see it! I think my FABed SST goes deeper inside the hole compare to this. But then, I was using a 4-foot floor jack as an extension to my breaker bar and I think I exerted far more torque that is needed.

I believe they put the two piece together with a rubber to protect the harmonic balancer assembly from damage of over torquing. That's just my thought.

LOL, floor jack plus breaker bar = break 4runner.

I'm sure the designers made it the way they did to dampen as much vibration as they could. And to make a way to take it off....

Here's my SST version:

I thought it worked but I have reason to doubt it now...

And for reference, I found another thread similar to what happened to mine: Broken Crank Pulley.

Thankfully, it's only one night a month that I go in to work at this crazy time. Awake at 155am....yawn. So much for waking up to the alarm clock.

Well, just like you, yawning at work right now. Went to bed late/spent hours reading around the forum last night!

Yep...and I found another one with the same issue where you also chimed in!
Now, based on reading from those threads and from mine, I came up with my own conclusion that those failures were caused by the SST bolts/pins not long enough to reach the pulley holes way past the rubber damper for proper support. Due to old age, I bet the rubber inside got brittle, deteriorated, or whatever!

This is one job I hope to never tackle again. Not bad once you know how to do it, but still not fun. Have fun.

Good Reading

It really is, RW*. But I was thinking, what about the URD product(s)? I thought those are one-piece lightweight pulley instead of two-pc. being joined by a rubber. So those defeats the purpose of the conventional harmonic balancer?

With regards to the rubber, it is then possible it can wear, deteriorate and fail due to age, and usage? Well, to answer my question, I guess so!
