Oh well I guess I'm confused then. Must be another piece I didn't know was separate.

So my question now is: Is it still safe to drive without that piece inside the crankshaft pulley?

Man, Ill show you the pic in a minute.

This one-It's the "thing" inside the crankshaft pulley. I thought the crankshaft pulley is one piece but it is not!

That... doesn't look good. You mean the rest of the pulley/harm bal still looks to be in one piece and usable? I would think you'll need a new one. But, I'm no expert on Toyota harmonic balancers....

On the 5vz-fe and others, we commonly call the crankshaft pulley a "harmonic balancer".

You will need to source a new harmonic balancer (pulley, crankshaft as the Toyota parts catalog calls it) if it is now in two or more pieces.

Do I really need to replace it,Kball? Granted I put more than enough torque and I can set the timing properly?

I would think with that broken off piece it wouldn't be balanced anymore. It helps balance your crankshaft so it's pretty important.

Amazon has one for $158. Says it will fit my 96. Not sure what you have but they should be the same.

Gt....yes, you need to replace it! Your chankshaft bearings may not like being vibrated to death. The separation generally occurs when the bolts used on the holding tool are too short and do not catch the inner pulley, IIRC. Thus, the holding torque causes the outer pulley to separate from the rubber and the inner pulley.

From another forum:
The pulley on the 5VZFE is in fact a harmonic balancer... some in the thread have in perfectly described it (two pieces of steel bound together with elastermeric damping rubber).

Hi K*, RW*, The only purpose of this piece that I can think of is to have the two holes there where to insert the SST when taking off/on the crankshaft pulley. What do you guys think?

No, the rubber is there to dampen vibrations like Rw said. Sorry you are talking about the specific piece that broke off... well, I would think the integrity of the part is now caput. I wouldn't trust it myself.

So "chain wrench" is the only way to take this bugger out now. Well, time to shop for a new parts then. Whew!

Chain wrench would be the only way to torque it. You can use the starter bump trick to get it off.

Well, I can't use the starter trick to get it off since there's no holes in the actual pulley.

But I'm buying a new Harmonic Balancer. Would you guys know the part number of this?

Thanks and Bear with me guys?

I'm not sure if what you said is the reason or just age of the rubber but I have the tool and the nubs on the tool that go into the holes are not very long so they don't go in very deep that's for sure.

You don't need a hole in the pulley. Put a ratchet (big) on the bolt set for Off (of course) and wedge it up against the frame. Bump the starter and it should break it free.

Really man...you mean there's really no need to lock/hold the pulley other than a breaker bar(in my case)?

Hmmm....sucks man! Our planned vacation is stalled due to this....my toytec stuff's still waiting...
