Question Super charger or I force V-8?

Ok, Gang!! You all look like a respectable and smart bunch of folks, so here's my question to you.

I have a 2000 T4R 4X4 SR5 with the 3.4lt V6, I am thinking about a supercharger with the 7th injector. looking at spending approxmetly 4-4.5K My question is

1. Should I just add the money to mine and trade up into an I force V8?

2. If I do the Supercharger is it going to be that much more power than the I-Force?

3. Is there any power lag like a turbo with the supercharger?

4. Do you need to increase the oil capasidy after the supercharger is installed on the V6?

5. How much will the supercharger vs the I force do on MPG?

Thanks so much for any and all info reguarding this. TJ

1. That's your choice
2. The V8 will have more towing "power" (if that's what you want).
3. There is no lag with SCr. I have tons more torque under 2k rpm.
4. No.
5. My MPG is the same as before. 16-18 mpg -- V8 will generally be a couple mpg less

Do you want towing power? Or speed power?
If you want speed... SC. Towing.... V8.

1. will the v8 fit? that'd be my biggest concern as I was under the impression that it does not.
2. the term power is all relative. are you looking at the torque or hp?
3. no
4. no
5. not sure what a 3.4sc would get but the v8 will get 12-15. also the 3.4sc will need premium while the v8 does not.

good luck

Properly size your turbo and you will have NO lag. Remember your Torque Converter flashes at 2000+rpm anyhow so lag isnt an issue unless you get some ungodly high A/R hotside....

Besides roots superchargers suck. If you want supercharger go with a centrifugal unit at least then you wont get massive heat soak...

Just for the record, the V8 would probably be getting better gas mileage in a 4runner. My dads Tundra, with a V8 gets 18-20mpg, in a 4runner it might be more!

I've never seen a v8 swap into a 3rd gen 4runner before, that would be a trip to see...

Torque for towing ought to be similar between the SC 3.4 and the V8. The V8 is rated for 315 ft lbs and the SC V6 without the fuel system modifications makes 297 ft lbs. For anyone whom has ever owned a forced induction vehicle, the torque curve is flatter than a table top.

My advice is to go with the TRD supercharger and either the 7th injector kit or the URD fuel upgrade. You'll spend a known amount of money with known results; the V8 swap could end up causing you an inordinate amount of money.

Sorry if I seemed to confuse anyone. I am about as much a mechanic as Greski is a famed NFL Quarterback. When I was saying that I was wondering about adding the 4-4.5k to my 4Runner and get a I force V8 I was talking about trading mine in and getting a 4th gen T4R with a I force V8. Sorry about that. TJ

Confusing a hypothetical engine swap with an actual performance gain of known potency seems a little misguided.

If you can get a 4.7 in a 3rd Gen for 5k, the line will be out your door.

I am a big fan of modified 3.4's. They are predictable, tunable and have been around enough that most of the guess work has been taken out.

I have driven 2 3.4 trucks that will go 100 gaining speed up hill in 5th gear at 5k feet of elevation. Both had the full run of SC fuel mods and computer crap.

The only other truck I have been in that would do that was a turbo'd 100 series. That cost a lot more than the SC and fuel mods.

If you like your 4Runner and it's in good shape, I would much rather drop $4k and supercharge the 3rd gen than spend the difference in value (probably $18,000-$20,000) on a 4th gen.

Good advice here.

I know this isn't actually an option, but I've come across a 4.7 (aka 2UZ) in a 3rd Gen (nor a 1UZ for that matter). They SHOULD fit though since the engine bay is larger than a 2nd Gen's.

I am just amazed at how I would of laughed my face off at a guy who would have came into the toyota store I used to work for back in the 80's thinking he would be able to trade for only 4-5k for a newer upgraded version of say a supra at that time.

Now I have turned into that idiot. I guess that it will probally be the super charger and the 7th injector. I will try to get back to you when I have it done. I apprecate all the valuable input I have received here. I will probally looking to do some mods to the computer also at that time. Thanks a bunch TJ
