Question on Dash removal

I have seen write ups on the removal of the instrument cluster, but how do you remove the piece of dash that goes across the whole car, the one that the passenger airbag seems to be part of?

Anyone have ideas?

funglenn,

never done it myself, one of these days i might, but for now, seems more trouble than its worth. what are you going to do?

also, i'd do the smart thing and unplug the battery completely, disable the airbags and *then* go to town.

I do not even know where to start with removing the dash, i was wondering could the squeak be coming from the dash flexing against the passenger airbag cover? My squeak seems to go away completely if I put a folded up towel between the door and the dash before I close it, thus putting pressure on the dash from the side.

Could I put WD-40 on the sides of the airbag cover?, or would this be bad for the airbag if it ever goes off?

Glenn,

I personally would not go through the trouble of removing the entire dash to do this. i think you're onto something though. if the source of the squeaking is coming from that area, have you tried removing the glove box and seeing if you can isolate and then fix it from there? i think that would be your first step.

If you do decide to remove the airbag, be careful!
Most dealerships have special tools to plug into the connector so it won't accidently go off. Those things can go off with just a little static electricity on you!

I have become sooo skilled at removing the glovebox in under 2 minutes.. there is an electronic brain for the truck, a heating vent, and then the airbag system, there is not much there to rattle. I am thinking of the cover of the airbag itself... what do you think of oiling it?

My 4Runner makes this rattling also at various moments. If I put a towel in between the door and the dash it goes away. Did you ever figure out what the problem was?

I don't believe his account exists anymore. You brought up a post from 5 years ago

There are a million things that COULD rattle in the dash, the fix is to simply track it down.

Mine's got plenty of funny squeaks too. If you can't track it down, a popular fix seems to be to invest in an upgraded sound system.

I figured it out. The dash is loose on the left side after the passenger airbag. Near were the dash meets the passenger door panel. I can hear it click when I push down on it. Must be a broken clip or something...
