an idiots guide to speakers?

I'm in the middle of rebuilding a 90 4runner 2dr right now. Motors done, lift is done, paints getting done. My question is about the stereo; what would you guys recommend for me? I've already got an Alpine 9805, Rockford Punch 250 and 150 amps and 2 Rockford 10" subs. What should I do for speakers? My truck has the usual spaces under the dash and in the rear. I just want something simple that will sound good.

I'd go for a good quality set of 6.5" component speakers in your front doors.
I run a set of Infinity Reference 6.5" comps, and the sound is amazing.

Those are the only speakers in my rig next to the sub in the back.
At work I open up one door and setup a lawn chair at the tailgate and eat outside nightly.
People who hear it says it sounds darn nice and concert like.
Last night I had on some jazz by Deems, and people were commenting on how real the piano sounded in it.

You can fit a good size speaker up front in the doors if you are willing to have pods made, or make your own.
Here are mine.

Agreed - however in a '90 you will have to do some cutting to the front doors to throw 6.5s in there. Another option is to use a set of Eclipse point source 4" coaxials in the stock location using the Punch 150 to push them.

Of course throw the Alpine in where the old radio was, and you can either buy a spacer to fill the rest of the 2 din opening or you can leave one of the older components of the 2 component HU to fill up the space.

Then on those two 10s, run them ported off of the Punch 250. Ideally you want something about 3 cubic feet total tuned to ~30hz

I'd like to stay away from building anything unless that is my only option. Are the 4" speakers in the front all I need? Seems fairly small to put out alot of sound.

If you wanna go with the 6.5's or even maybe 5.25 components up front, you can use spacers, cut a hole, and mount them in the stock door panels. That's what I did, read about it here. I did have to trim a little metal off the doors to get the speakers to fit, but you're talking about a piece of metal the size of a credit card for each door.

If you go with the 4" instead, you won't be very happy... especially when they start rattling the dash from all the power that amp's pushing through them. If you get em, just run em off your receiver... but it won't be nearly as good of a system as if you went with the components.

Edit: Fixed the link... try it now.

What if I was to run 4" off the deck, 6.5" in the doors off the punch150 and the subs off the 250? How would this work?

That would work well, and belive it or not, the Eclipse point source coaxial 4's would make ya happy off of the punch 150. They are probably the best set of coaxial 4" that I've heard in a long time.

Churnd give you another option by spacers, but you'll need to remove your door panel carriers and do some cutting, which really is no biggie to do.

I don't have my 6.5's in the front, but i have a nice pair of Infinity Kappa component 6.5's in the back. Running dual 10s off an amp I dare not say the name of as it's an embarassment. The 4s in the front are next, then a new amp and a pair of 12s in a box custom made by yours truly. Right now, that sound is great. I don't think I would want to modify the front door. Course it's all relative. Eventually we always want more power than we have and the only solution is to get more than we can handle.
