Considering parting out or partially parting out 02 4Runner

Apparently my engine is bad. More likely shop did poor work. But the rear axel was replaced end to end brand new within the last few years. Tires and wheels very new. Is it worth it or pull the big parts and scrap the rest ?

Is there anything else wrong with the 4Runner?

Are you looking at getting a newer vehicle?

If the engine was the only issue, I would personally install a new engine and keep on driving!

Of Course I never like seeing cars go to scrap, so there is that.....

If parting out to sell, it usually takes a loooong time.

I had the motor rebuilt less than 2 years ago. But also had to have trans rebuilt about 5 years ago. Financially I’m not sure I can afford a new motor. But I’m thinking between almost new wheels and tires, powder coated bumper, and almost new axle I can get 5k ? I love it but I’m exhausted. It has been at the shop that did the rebuild for 2 months and I’m just ready to give up. And I don’t have time, nor probably the tools, to do a full swap myself. I’m in Houston area.

first off it sounds like you need a new shop, 2 years on a rebuild engine is not a good sign since these motors typically reach 600,000km with reg maintenance., I would be questioning what went wrong the first time and after the rebuild, new rear axle, again not a good sign since they are easy to rebuild, and unless it was rusted out, bent and blown should have been fixed not replaced. I would replace the motor and sell the truck if it is cursed, but it sounds like the shop is cursed. 5vz-fe are very common to come by, and the hardest thing about changing the motor is 4' of 1/2" extensions to reach the motor to trans bell housing bolts. A part out would be more work than replacing the motor, I know I usually ask the part out owner to remove what ever I need to save me the wrench time, and if you ask someone to remove the part they want they may show up with torches and cut out what they want leaving the rest a mess.

Well the rear axle is new and fine. It was replaced when my car got hit. Somehow the guy tagged only my right rear tire and bent the axle so it was replaced. So is a crate motor your recommend fix ? And I lightly looked around at motors I’m just not sure.

Red face

Downside to a bad engine no test drive !!

Can`t test the AC the drive train

If you know anyone that knows your trucks history that might buy it it might bring some more cash

Parting out to me is a money losing project !! If you have a large local market that can pick things up

Paying truck freight on the heavier parts pretty much kills the deal. Plus the added work of securing items on pallets and getting it to the freight company

Then if you can do the part out you should be able to swap an engine .

Personally I would buy a known good low mile OEM engine that hasn't been touched, up here we can get JDM engines and 90% of all Tacomas got scrapped due to buy outs and rusted frames, and the wreckers use them as yard trucks, if you go JDM they all have the wrong manifold and cross over pipe that goes under the bellhousing, which can make the job more difficult than necessary. I would stay away from a crate motor, and I would be questioning what happened with that last rebuild, what was changed, what is "bad" about your current engine state, and previous engine state, are the 2 issues related, maybe you should perform your own compression test and determine whats "bad". And I hope insurance paid for your rear diff, that would explain a complete change out, but I would have taken the 3rd member out and hung it in the garage.
