ashtray opens by itself

Hi guys. Somehow something broke I am assuming and my ashtray doesn't stay shut, it slowly opens itself. I looked and examined everything and I can't figure it out. Anyone? HELP!!

The only suggestion I can give you is to have a look at someone else's ass-tray, with their permission of course, and see how it is assembled.

Is there a clip or lock or something that keeps it shut?

A few things to look at would be the tightness of the screws that hold in the ashtray guide (remove ashtray to see) and the springs on the ashtray itself. There is the metal top and the plastic bottom that are connected and can be removed from the ashtray guide.

My Tacoma had this issue, there is a metal clip that you have to push down to remove the ashtray fully, I bent mine back and up a little and the problem stopped. Give that a try.

I might have an extra one lying around somewhere... I'll see if I can find it.

Same here. I try to keep it empty. Best solution is if you don`t smoke take it out.

I have mine full of change and it never opens. The trick is that there is a litle metal clip that holds it in place, but there isn't a big enough bump in the plastic for the clip to hold. The fix is find the exact spot where the clip sits when the tray is closed, bend the clip slightly so it gets good pressure on the plastic slider. Then get a dremel or something similar and grind a groove in the plastic for the clip to sit in and grab better.... Problem Solved
