94 4runner rear speakers

Hey guys,

Im looking to replace my rear speakers on my 94 4runner, but i'm not sure what size they are. Some sites say they're 4, 5 1/4, and other says 6 1/2. So which one is it really??? Also does anyone know where i can get a guide on how to install them myself? I can't find one and dont really want to pay someone to install my rear speakers. Thanks in advance any advice or help you guys can offer.

YOu want to use 5 1/4 ... 6 1/2 will fit, but you will need to make a bunch of mods... 5 1/4 will drop in with a template...

Eclipse makes a good 5 1/4 point sorce speaker.. 2 way with cross over for around 150.00 or so..

I dotn have a picture, but you have to buy or make a template ie speaker mount.... Why get infinity? Eclipse is so much better and also a better name brand... dont buy anything till you at lest hear the eclipse

I replaced the speakers in mine with 6 1/2". I would have bought 5 1/4" but already had the 6 1/2s. It was a pain getting the boxes out and then quite a bit of work cutting into the box to get the speakers to fit properly.

When I finally got everything back together and cranked it up I was anything but impressed. It still sounded like crap. I bypassed the stock speaker wiring with some better stuff to see if that would make a difference, but in the end I scrapped the speaker boxes all together and bought a pair of good Eclipse 6x9s and mounted them in cheap carpeted boxes from Walmart. I also added an amp and 10" sub. That made quite a bit of difference.

Basically, I think there's just too much empty space in the back for a pair of 5 1/4" speakers to provide decent sound. However, if you're going to go with 5 1/4" or 6 1/2", I'd pick the 5 1/4". I think it's more work than it's worth to modify the boxes to fit the bigger speakers.

I replaced the rear side speakers on my 4Runner a couple of years ago with some 6.5 inch Kenwoods. I believe the stock speakers were 4 inch, inserted into a little speaker box. The kit that Crutchfield sent me simply replaced the whole box unit with an adapter plate. The new Kenwoods sounded like crap. I immediately put the stock ones back in and returned the others. So, if there is a kit out there that allows you to put the new speakers in the stock speaker box, then it would probably sound pretty good. But, I don't recommend the speaker box removal option.

I'm pretty sure its got 4" speakers. I had the panels off my 94 for a few days trying to decide how to mount some speakers in place of those boxes. The (kinda) neat thing about those boxes is that each speaker has its own mini amp.

New 94 4runner owner here.

So you're telling me I can't just buy some speakers that match the size of the one's already in there and just swap them out? Why does it seem like no matter what you get it has to be modified in some way?

That seems ridiculous to me.

This thread just celebrated it's 6th birthday. lol

This is what I did, go to post 17. There's also lots of good ideas, too. I just did a little write up.

Lol. I just noticed that. It must've been like this from the beginning.
