I picked up a 1985 auto tranny 4Runner today. For the past 2 weeks it has been having a speratic problem.(The previous owner is my bro, so I am sure he is not bull˟˟˟˟ting me). The problem is that it will not down shift when you stomp the pedal. The owner thought it was the throttle position sensor because he wiggle the plug and it then shifted fine. I drove it about 2 miles before it quit down shifting.

Because it is itermittent, I assume it is electrical. Has any body had a similar problem that can confirm it is electrical? Or some other issue? It shifts properly when you do it manually with the shift lever. I am at a loss...

On the way to Tellico tomorrow so any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

If my memory serves me, the 85 transmission is cable controlled, the only electronics is the od solenoid on the case.

See if the throttle cable is broken and/or adjust it tighter.

I did check the "kick down" cable. It appears to be in good working condition. I spoke to a gentleman this weekend who has a '85 auto. He said that he had the same problem. It was a solenoid in the tranny. Does this sound familiar?

 

I came up with the same problem in my 87 , what was the deal ?

 

Dunno? I sold the truck and the new owner threw a new tranny in it.

It was a solinoid in my auto trany. It wasn't too much $$ for the part, but it cost $120.00 in labor for my local transmission guy to replace it.
If you can, find a shop that is familiar with 'overdrive' transmissions. I got a estimate for a "transmission specailty shop" and they quoted me over $1500.00 to put in a rebuilt tranny. This guy I found was familiar with our older yotas. Cost me less than $140.00 to replace it. He didn't evan have to pull the tranny off to get to it.

UPDATE , Problem solved . TPS connector was unpluged.
