yea the manifold bolts are a problem to the only thing i think of off the top of my head is to racing header bolts tht have the c-clip on the head as weel tht when the bolt spins the c-clip hits the manifold or header and keeps it from coming out.

if things go well tonight i will be bringing the berry in the shop and fixing the pie so i can drive it around. to many cops to drive it open manifold.

edit:

found a picture of what i was talking about:

Cool idea! I can't remember what issue it was, but I know I've seen lock washer equipped manifold bolts in a magazine. My manifold bolt issue has gone as far as stripping the bolt hole on the head thats closest to the firewall....even with a bigger bolt shoved in the stripped hole, I still have a constant, un-repairable exhaust leak >.<. SO FAR the smog guys haven't noticed it yet! lol

I'll try to find that article on lock washer header bolts and look em up to see if they have a toyota 22r/22re application. I'll let ya know if I find anything!

If any of you guys have the solution to the manifold issue, I am all ears. I tried new bolts and different locking formulas. The heat is just to much, so will be following about the c clips.

Thats the biggest reason of me going to headers. Finding a goodused one is luck of the draw. On one of the bolts, you might could drill a hole all the way through, but dont think it is an option on the other 2.

Irab.. you probably had them tight enough, just when they are worn out, no way of fixing them at this time I know of.

exhaust work

so this is what i had to deal with:

you cant really see it but the pipe going to the cat had another crack right next to the break.

held it together and tacked it up.

the original thought was to tack it then use it as a template to find another pipe with the same bend, but i didnt feel like doing tht after i tacked it.

so here is it all welded up and ground smooth:

then i decided tht this has been done before and still broke eventually, so here came this:

i cut the metal from a longer strip and then drilled the holes

i then took som pliers and my hands and bent it the best i could to match the bottom bend of the tube.

then tacked it in a couple places and hammered it down then tacked some more and hammered some more and did this 5-6 times until the metal patch was fit snug around the pipe and tacked in a lot of places.

i then welded it all up:

i did all this so i could drive it somewhere, so i bolted it up and left. sounded quiet again, i didnt bolt the metal bracket to the bell housing due to the fact tht i have to find it. probably wouldnt have tooken long to find it but i need to go so yea. when it breaks i will reweld it and mybe then install the bracket.

other then tht i installed a little air horn on the berry also. i just couldnt stand the road runner beep-beep and i got it for free.

I have seen them cracked but not in two pieces. It should work as good as new and you were able to do it your self. Seems like exhuast issues come up from time to time. Get them fixed and sooner or later got do it again. Great job on getting it done yourself.

my friends 81 hasnt been touched in 2 weeks due to him being gone untily mid july. last thing tht we did to it was try to put it together.

we needed some timing cover bolts so we took them out of the 81 engine. and in stalled them in the 85. put it all together and adjusted the valves at TDC#1 then tried to turn it to TDC#4 and it wouldnt budge. after a long time of looking found the timing cover bolt was to long and the crank pulley was hitting it so we removed the pulley and cut it then put it back together, then found the other one was to long, did the same thing.

but it still wouldnt turn, so we started back tracking everything he did. removed rocker assy, nada. removed hhead, nada. getting ready to remove timing cover, and i rememberd it turned with the timing cover on so i removed the pulley and turned it over, and it spun.

so at first i thought the 81 pulley was differant then the 85 so i grabbed a spare one i had and on the way back i asked if he installed the oil pump drive gear, he told me he never had one tht his 81 never had one. i tried to tell him they have to have one to work. but he would not listen so when we got back to his house i started looking for one. and while staring at the one on his 81, he finally comes over and says is tht the oil pump drive gear, yup. f*#k, needless to say im right he was wrong. then he had to pack for the trip.

havent done much work on my truck lately, been working on the solid axle.

i did however put my light top on the berry so the truck is still open but i have shade. will post a picture later.

also changed the oil, checked the t-case and diff fluids.
the t-case and front diff were good, but the rear diff fluid was blcak. so i drained it and filled it up with new gear oil.

also balanced and rotated my tires like i do every oil service.

during my oil change on sunday i inspected my rear shoes, and the forward most shoe was gewtting real close to metal in the center, so i replaced those today. then found out one of my wheel cylinders was leaking, so i will be replacing tht soon.

have my first day of work tomarrow so hopefully soon i will be able to get more stuff done on these. and i may not have to sell the berry now!

You are doing all of the things I need to do mine. I tried to do my tranfer case, and whoever did it before really put the bolts in tight.

Good luck on the job. That has a big factor on the out of these.

Grats on the new job, glad to hear it means you might be able to keep the Berry. Its a tough hobby to have without some kind of steady cash flow.

during 4th of july something happened to my pass. fender causing my door to get caught up on it, and it got worse after a couple of times of opening and closing, so bad tht i couldnt open more then 2in before it would bind on the fender.

so today i removed the inner fender and took one of my body hammers and hammered out a few dents tht might have happened on the 4th. but still no go so i grabed a flat head screw driver and stuck it inbetween the door and the fender an pried the fender out and while holding it out with the screw driver i watched where it would bend then started tapping all along the area until it pulled the fender out to match the door. then did a little more here and their, and whola no more binding or even rubbing.

I hear you on the light top. I will be so glad to get a bikini top or something like that. It does get old. I am going to start looking into a lift assembly for the top. Seen a guy do one on here for his.

Congrats on the body work. It just takes patience and eventually you will get the feel for it.
