Thanks ksti.. I feel better about the motor and glad as well as it has always been a great running motor and now shouldnt have any leaks. Hoping to get a little improvement with performance just by the eliminaton of some emissions junk and a good cleaning.

Thanks Cory... Glad you mentioned that spinning of the tranny. Just as soon as it warms up, I am doing that to both of the trannys I have laying around. That should check that it shifts in all 5 gears and give a better understanding of the condtion of the trannys. Really appreciate the idea. Thanks again.

When we win the lottery that we never play, I am moving further south. The only cold and snow I want to see is on TV. I can still take the heat better then the cold. Seems like the cold just gets to me as the older I get.

I have the drive shafts out. It taps when I have my foot off of the clutch whether it is in gear or not. When I push the pedal to the floor it is quite as can be with it in or out of gear. I have tried a whole new clutch assembly, the orginal Asian clutch and another Aisian clutch that I had setting on the shelf. I have replaced the pilot bearing as well.

Before I pulled the tranny, with the tcase locked up, it would ide with the clutch out or in and not make a noise when it was in neutral. I couldnt let the clutch out in gear as the tcase wouldnt let the tranny spin. I did not try real hard at all to force the tcase to break loose with the engine and tranny running.

I did replace the flywheel as the orginal had always had a broken tooth on it so now I am going to try your idea as well and install the orginal flywheel and see if it is possibly the cause as well. I just really hope it isnt my transmission as all 5 gears were really quite and I know that getting a 5 speed tranny with a quite 5th gear can be luck of the draw. Just got to wait for this weather to warm up as about 10 minutes was all that I could handle yesterday and today is even colder.

it sounds like the sheriff has damaged the tranny terry something in the lower end of the gears towards the output shaft to the transfer case

just as an idea gona be messy but roll her over on the back with the shift forks open to the floor an rotate the input wiggle the shift forks it almost sounds like youve got a tooth or bushing broken off inside the case if it catches or locks it could kick the piece out or even go quiet as gravity pulls it out of bumping on things

I stuck my other tranny in and the noise was no longer there. I had it in gear which I am not sure of right nowwhich gear it is but it is sounding great. It started getting cold so I didnt put the shifter stick in and check all of the gears. I dont have the driveshafts in either. Just got it enough to see if I eliminated the problem. This tranny could possibly be bad as well as I dont know about all of the gears in it. Just will have to hook everything up and see.

I will eventually send my old tranny to a shop and see what if it could be fixed reasonably cheap or jump in and see if I could possibly rebuild it. Weather is to bewarmer this week and am hoping to get alot accomplished. Atleast the 88 back on the road.

I tried my other W56 and was told it was bad. Now I know it is bad, 4th gear grinds going into gear and wont stay in without being held. Maybe later I will try and combine the two trannys to make one. Will be a good learning experience.

I got a G52 tranny that I am going to try and see if it will work tomorrow. It will be the one from my 85 build that I plan on starting on tomorrow. I will come across another tranny for it later so if it is good, I am not to worried about finding one for it later. Atleast I will know if it is good or not as well.

Hello Cyberhorn.. I have an FSM, I havent looked at it to see if it goes into great detail about rebuilding one. For as much trouble that I went thru to find this tranny, I am going to give it my best shot. My dad can rebuild the old auto trannys and he said manuals are supposed to be easier.

Hello kornhuskerwizard.. I wish we had wood heat in the house and I have had wood heat in a garage before. It holds the heat in so much better. You can actually get warm with wood heat over gas. There is a difference. I am going to start working on getting my shop insulated and heated. Wont be going thru this next winter.

Got to searching Craigslist and found one. Supposed to be good, but you never know, didnt ost to much so feel it is worth the risk. The guy I got it from has a perfect interior and told him I was intrested in it. Will have to wait and see on that one. I also looked into an 84 cab and frame. It is rolled and stripped of the bigger parts but has a PERFECT dash and pad in it. It has other parts that would make it worth the $100 he wants for it.

Next tranny I am going to try as soon as it warms up.

I got the 88 running again. Saturday, the day that was warm and I had a chance to get the new tranny in. It isnt as quiet as my orginal tranny, but it isnt noisey either. I am ging to start looking into seeing what I can do about rebuilding the orginal tranny. I am thinking the input shaft might be bent and I might be able to just swap it out with the tranny that has the bad 4th gear in it. These things are getting so hard to find.

I have only driven it around the block asn still need to get the power steering hooked back up and the hood back on. Looks like Wednesday I will have a descent day to get it wrapped up, but will have to wait and see.

Ive never personally tore a toyota manual apart, ive taken a couple chevy trannys both autos and manuals in college, and the manuals gotta be easier than a automatic, im sure theres info on the computer to help you. Yes these toyota parts are getting harder to find including the trannys, people make fun of me cause i have a small toyota junkyard but dang its nice to dig around and find what ur looking for in your own back yard!!

Hello Cyberhorn..I am determined to learn how to do a manual tranny. I had another truck that had a noisey 5th gear and it a very common problem. You think it is easier then an an automatic? I didnt think the automatic was bad.

Hello kornhuskerwizard.. I have seen a few threads about rebuilding them and I am going to start searching everywhere on the net. I will even look into buying a video. I have an FSM but it still doesnt give me the confidence I would like. I do have one bad tranny that I can practice on.

I finally got a descent day so got the 88 driveable. Still need to put in the front shaft and center console but atleast it is driveable. Not happy with 5th gear but do have another lead on a tranny for a great price and will be checking into it soon.

I will baby the 88 for a while and make sure I get all of the bugs worked out of it and let it run for awhile and redo the timing, valves and other adjustments that may need to be done. I set them by the book, but think when one has ran for awhile it does need to be redone.

I did get the exhaust welded back up and while at the muffler shop a guy had a great looking 86. Hadnt seen it before, really nice truck.

I think the hardest part of rebuilding a worn Tranny would be not knowing exactly where to look for said wear. Some things obviously would jump out at you but others things may not be so noticeable jm2c. I would love to try it myself but ugh there's people way better then me I probably just let them do it.

Hey Terry, how ya doing ?

I agree, it would be in the back of my mind until I re-checked adjustments.
Did you get a pic of the 86'?

Hello Jason.. I am starting to get a few trannies laying around, but seems like the cost of gears would make it prohibitive, but I would atleast give it a try. If nothing else maybe just combining two trannies to make one and see what comes up. I try to get the most from parts when I can.

Hello ksti.. I wish I would of gotten a picture of the 86. Dont know what I was thinking, Doh!! Havent seen it since. I got called up to go back overseas so have been tied up with getting different test done. We have had some nice days and that is when it seems I have to go do something for the military. I have alot of things i have been wanting to do. When I get the chance things should move along great.

I did get some time to finish working on the 88. I am going to get another tranny for it on Wednesday if nothing comes up and at the latest Friday. This tranny is good but not as quite as the orginal. When this truck was mine, tranny was quiet and so I started fixing all of the things that I didnt care for such as wind noise and replaced the door seals and lining the inner panels with Peel and Seal. I spent alot of time getting it to ride nice as well.

I have seen the thread about what is broke on your Toyota and alot is true, but would suggest in not working just the looks or performance but chasing out all of the irritating things that take the fun out of driving it. Alot of the little things can be done that make a big difference.

I took it on its first real run since getting it back on the road and this Runner is truly one of my all time favorite trucks I have ever owned. I am wishing I hadnt let the wifey have it now but it does give me a goal for my 86. I need to re-adjust the valves as I have one ticking. I am going to get me a mechanics stethoscope. The only thing I like better about driving my 3rd gen Runner is that it has cruise control, other then that, I would just as soon as be in the 88 over any other car.

One of the kiddos bumped the plastic on the rear heater and cracked it, it is brittle being 20 plus years old. I usually use a 2 part epoxy, but a guy I work with has an electric glue gun. I think this is one of my new favorite tools and seems to work great. I hear they really arent to expensive and for the plastic that is used in these trucks think it will be a good investment.

Something I think that will work on the plastics for these trucks. Time will tell.
