Not sure what the trucks are like up in the area that you live now, but if I did want one that was rust free and a good solid truck that wouldnt need much work, I would fly to Cali and drive one back. Carrying a basic tool kit and a few parts though.
Hello Terry. I hear ya on being a gazillionaire, lol.

The toyotas in this area tend to vary, it seems like the 4runners tend to fare a little better (I'm assuming the toppers help seal out the elements) compared to the pickups which bedside wheel wells seem to rust out. I've talked o some locals, and it sounds like they salt the roads here, which has me worried about my 4runner and has me thinking about doing some kind of undercoating in the future! Here is Toyota pickup I was considering: http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/3427799839.html
I like the description, "tad bit of rust" lol. I probably would buy it if the wife would agree and it ran good... I see fiberglass bedsides in it's future, lol.

hey ed,
good plan on the DD. i picked up an '85 x-cab 2wd last may, and it even had the 22RE for a bonus! one owner and only a little rust. somehow i got it for 1300 bucks! i love it! i average 30mpg! its nice driving a completely stock truck so i don't have to worry about some random hose breaking or some electrical wire shorting out all the time

yeah, I can understand that... but at least you're making some good progress with the 4runner, and it's reliable!

Man, I wish I had the time and money for another project, I'd be all over that Stout for that price!

Kinda sad to hear about blueberry, I was looking forward to seeing you finish it! But I know how it goes with projects, I've had to sell some of mine when things were tight, others I just plain lost interest in, or traded for something different. What are you going to do with a mail jeep fame? Do you got a new project?

I kept all the good stuff off the yota. I have Willy, he is stock. I want to build another jeep just like Willy, except on my gear with the 37in boggers.

Dang, 30mpg, that must be sweet! Yeah, that's another reason why I want another truck for a DD, like you mentioned, you don't have to worry about a random break down, and also I can't tear into the 4runner to fix stuff (like my power steering) because of my schedule I can't have it down for very long because I need to drive it to work.

Haven't been on here in awhile, I got a little update, I got another Toyota, (another 83'... this will be my third 83') I got it from my dad...he gave me a really good deal! So now I have a good little work truck and now I feel more comfortable about tearing into my 4runner knowing I dont have to finish a project in a certain amount of time so I can still drive it to work. Maybe now I will get the power steering project started, and my front bumpstops mounted, lol. Here's the only pics I have of the 83'...I posted them earlier on my build thread, but they're all I have right now.

I don't know much of the history on it, my dad bought about a year ago from my uncle. I do know that my uncle put a newer model year tranny in it (85' or newer, haven't checked to see what style it is yet) because it's longer than the 83' tranny and he had to move the crossmember back and lengthen the front driveline, other than that it's pretty stock. It has a 22R, the odometer reads 160,582... It's not an SR5, no tach, or power steering, it does have a tilt steering column. It has brand new Wild Country TXT 31"x10.50's.

I wish I would have gotten some pics of me driving out of my parents yard. They have about 20+ inches of snow at their house, and a super steep driveway from hell about a 1/4 mile long (They haven't been able to drive up it since it snowed you have to hike up to their house). Anyway I chained up the front tires and got it lined up with the driveway and was able to drive it out of there (luckily it was all downhill so I was able to keep my momentum going) it was pretty sketchy, lots of trees to slide into or steep abrupt banks to crash off of, but I made it plowing snow all the way... half the time the front end felt like it was floating, and I couldn't tell if my front wheels were turned or pointed straight, lol. Anyway I'm excited, and will post some more soon!

Nice little round nose Ed. Hows the box for rust? Canadian trucks are pretty rotten.

Thanks Travis! It's hard to tell in the pics, the cab is in good shape, metallic grey, my dad already replaced the rusted out bed with a different one, it's in real good shape, just missing the tailgate, it's primered black for now, I would like to eventually try to match the color of the cab.

Nice truck Ed it's good to have extra transportation so you can take your time and enjoy your project. I have been unable to get anything done on my truck between work and the holidays hopefully soon.

Thanks Richard, I'm pretty excited getting the 83'...it will be nice to have a work truck and get better gas mileage too! Now I can finally start some projects on the 4runner I've been putting off...(my passengerside exhaust manifold had a hairline crack in it, the other day from the cold weather it cracked completely in half, lol, so I need to replace that). Sounds like you have some pretty good projects of your own going on! I need to swing by your thread and get caught up!

We're liking the new place, just trying to get used to the weather difference, we have about 16" of snow outside total, got about 5" yesterday, it's snowing again right now, about 25 degrees outside, lol...

Thanks bttrs! The 83' is in pretty good shape, just a few things that it needs (It's missing the steering column cover, and a few other small things, but nothing major, that's part of the fun, is finding the little odds and end stuff you need, lol.

Thanks Chuckar! I really am glad to have the extra transportation! I just had to get my starter rebuilt on the runner (only $30) and now I need an exhaust manifold because my cranked in half on the passenger side... seems like it's always something, but like you said, now I will enjoy the project more! Sounds like you've been really busy too, I can't wait to see some more progress on your truck, that things is going to be sweet when your finished!!!
