Thanks Terry, I'm hoping to test the 4 runner's reliability over the next week and a half, I would really like to take it, but in the end the wife has the final say, lol

So today I finished welding up the driverside shock hoop and mounted the shock...

^^^ got a little hotfootI've gotten so used to ignoring slag and sparks that burn me while welding (because I hate stopping in the middle of a weld) that my pant leg had 1' tall flames coming off it and I didn't notice until the heat started getting unbareable, lol, luckily my sweaty sock prevented me from getting burnt! I usually use my leather apron for protection, but I was using it to protect my fresh paint on the knuckle and steering arm, lol, shows where my priorities are!

Driverside finished

^^^For the front driveline I'm planning to cut the double cardan joint off the 4runner driveline, then I'll use the rear section of the 2 peice rear driveline from my 85' longbed parts truck and cut it to length and weld in the dc joint. It will work for now, until I can get a long slip driveline.

Last edited by rustED; Aug 1, 2012 at 11:56 AM. Reason: i kept calling the dc joint (double cardan joint) a cv joint, dont want to confuse anyone, lol.

Lol, I hate to admit, but I've had this happen before, a long time ago, ( we're suposed to learn from our mistakes, or get wiser as we grow older, or something right, lol,) I'm just glad it wasn't worse, lol, my wife didn't think it was too funny, she was like "did you stop, drop and roll" lol, at least I was wearing my leather gloves and was able to just pat it out!

My parents recently bought an unfinished cabin on 10 acres up in the northern part of Washington state (aprox 40miles from the Canadian border) that they are planning to move into in two weeks, so my wife & kids and I just spent the last 8 days at their place working on it trying to help them get some projects finished so they can move in. It was really nice to get away, but I was so busy I forgot to take very many pics, lol here's a few.

^^^ here's some pics of my dad's 83' Toyota. Original paint on the cab, but the bed was rusted out, so he got a replacement from my uncle and primered it black for now. The truck is clean!

^^^heres a couple pics of my parents back yard, prime deer hunting country!

^^^heres a couple of pics of my brother's 85' in front of my parents cabin, sweet truck! I was hoping to drive my 4 runner on this trip, but didn't have enough miles on it to be sure I could trust it on that far of a trip.

Wow, NICE PAD, Buddy! Very nice of you, Ed, and you got to get away in the deal, too, right? haha... What a BEAUTIFUL place to retire, man!

Bro's truck is SICK! So is pops... Yours might be the one they envy though, ya know? lol......

Isaiah.... Can't speak for Ed here... But the best way I got learning stuff to do and how to do it was just by looking up key words in Search on things I was trying to fix/things that I wanted to do. Then I watched lots of guys build threads... After starting my own, and they taking time to comment and help me out, I met LOTS of good people over the last 3 years.... Built 3 motors, did lots of restoration, lots of mods that I kept and some I undid, haha... It's been a GREAT adventure and takes up WAY too much of my time! hehehehe..........

Ed is a good dude... Keep an eye on his build thread and the build threads and repair threads of others, ...you'll learn alot. OH, and check all the 'sticky' threads on the 'FORUM' page.... Go through your year rig and start reading up all the 'sticky' posts... those are posts that explain, best, how to do certain things and then read up on the FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions)...it'll help a lot!

Nice to meet ya, Isaiah.. now start a thread

Hey Mark! Yeah my parents place was awesome! And it was nice to get away, little vacation, if I can find work in that area my wife and I are considering moving to that area after are house sells, the kids loved it. Next time I'm taking the runner and going to do some exploring/wheeling! Lol! My dad is going to get good use out of his 83' this winter, they have a very steep incline on their driveway that is going to take a 4x4 to climb once theres snow on the ground!

Dang, that sounds sick!

I lived for a time right on the lake in East Valley Spokane.... BIT UP THERE and lots of snow, ya know? hahaha.... We had a tunnel on really bad winters in the driveway, rather than shoveling it out... We'd just pack it, shovel out the driving area, enough for the doors to open, and then let it pile up, only shoveling the bottom as we went... Kept packing the sides, and then eventually we had a 6'8" Tunnel that was ICE HARD all around.... Covered it with Huge Roof Cover rolls and iced that... VOILA, we had a rain proof tunnel for the winter! hahaha... Very cool, and we just kept an opening to the carport which was pitched and solid as steel... So we'd drive in and get out at any spot and be sheltered, haha. Anyway, it was BEAUTIFUL, right on the Lake, Ed... Mountains and stuff all around, not far from Canadian Skiing/and other skiing, .... Right off Starr rd.

I LOVED living there.. but honestly? I got spoiled on the SoCal coastal weather, starting at birth, haha. Just an hour to the mountain tops, Skiing, surfing and Lake Cruising all on the same day if ya want, hahaaha... But yes, nearly NOTHING tops the beauty of THICK WILDERNESS! SO SAFE for the kids.. So sheltered from ALL THE CRAP! All the things a guy like you loves right in the backyard, eh?

BTW, tore into those Aisin Hubs today.... Looks like the tiny ball that goes on the spring was missing.... And that's just the first one! hahaa. Not a biggie, ... Wabbit has em for both for 12$. Shouldn't be too much to ship a TINY SPRING AND BALL, right? haha. Kinda bummed..... But s'all good... It'll be a couple days before I get all the hay and dirt and RTV out of em and ready for paint anyway... And the cover goes on last after the CV repair, right? So, yeah, .... I'll live, could be MUCH worse, right? haha.

CONGRATZ TO YOUR PARENTS! ... Possibly you and the fam, too

I think your mom and dad bought my dream place. Hoping to someday get something like that out in the country. I was raised in the country and now live in town. What was I thinking??

Your dad and brother have some great looking Yotas. Seeing a clean first gen truck is getting rarer each day.

Dont blame you for not wanting to take a long road trip for the first time out.

Hello Isaiah...The way I learned was to just get a manual and start with the easy things first and start working your way from there. Working on these trucks can be done with the basic of tools.

If you really want to learn find an old bombed out truck of any kind and start with a manual and practice on it. You are only going to make it better and get some experience. Lots of info on the web and Youtube videos are helpful. I have spent numerous hours looking for in on web.

Find someone working on their project and offer to help. They might start you on boring jobs, but that is to see how serious you are about learning. I have kids helping all of the time and some never come back and others cant wait to help again. I have let some adults shoot primer and even take around with the paint gun.

Ask a self employed mechanic if he could use some free help. There are times an extra hand is needed. Be positive, and where there is a will there is a way.

Hi Isaiah, welcome to YotaTech, and Congrats on owning your first yota! Mark (aka Chef) and Terry gave some very good advise, and I think they covered all the bases! I've learned a lot and have gotten alot of ideas from reading other peoples build threads. Also, as Mark mentioned the stickies are very helpful, I used them when I rebuilt my front axel, and also when I did my aisin locking hubs, the pictures and step by step walk through was very helpful. My suggestion is to keep reading through build threads, decide what direction you want to go with your truck (what mods are going to suite your needs, both on and off-road) and find a build thread that is similiar to what you are wanting to accomplish. Ask questions and do a lot of research. That's what I did before doing my SAS. Anyway, good luck on your truck and feel free to ask me any questions you might have on on my thread.

Thanks Mark! Yeah we really like the area, we drove right through Spokane valley on the way home, we are leaning towards Deer Park, Chewelah, Colville areas so far, looked at some houses there already, lol. I think it would be an awesome place to raise the kids, they had a blast playing out in the woods, making toys out of sticks and whatever they could find, lol, I don't even think they missed watching TV, lol. That's how me and my bros and sis were raised, always lived out in the country. I know what you mean about SoCal tho, I lived in San Jose for awhile. You could go hit the beach in Santa Cruz, and it wasn't that far to hit Lake Tahoe in the winter for some snowboarding!

Sorry to hear about your Aisin hubs missing the ball bearing and spring,I ran into the same thing on mine lol, sounds like Wabbit will have you hooked up and you'll be back wheelin in no time!

Hi Terry, yeah I really like mom & dad's place, I think its the perfect place for them to retire! I know what you mean about living in town, I always lived out in the country growing up. When my wife and I first got married we lived out in the country (she had always lived in town) then after my daughter was born we bought our first home in town. It was convenient for traveling back and forth to work, but I think we're both ready to get back to some country living, lol.

Yeah I was drooling over my dads first Gen Toyota! I've owned two 83's and neither as nice as his. The cab was really mint, original paint and no rust, I think he's planning to try to get the color code so he can paint the new bed to match. My bro's 85' is real nice too, he just got it painted a year or so ago, had the canopy done to match. I just gave him a tilt steering column for it to replace his non-tilt column, plus his windsheild wiper switch and horn were broke, so it should fix all his problems at once when he does the swap, lol.
