Thanks guys I appreciate your good wishes, but I have some bad news. We loaded up and left this morning. Made it about 20 miles pulling some big hills and I started hearing a tap tap, tap, tap noise in 5th gear. Pushed in the clutch and it went away, let it out and it started doing it again, so I down shifted to 4th and the noise stop. So I drove on for a few miles to a rest stop area to see if any other gears were affected, and 1st, 3rd, and 5th all make noise. 2nd and 4th still work. So I'm pretty bummed out, and I'm talking to my wife trying to decide what to do. My 4 runner is sitting there idling, and suddenly the lower radiator hose springs a leak!!! This isn't looking to good!!! Anyway, I sent my wife to the nearest town to get a radiator hose and some antifreeze. I'm just waiting for her to get back. Then I will probably limp the 4 runner back home. Ill take the old canyon backroad that follows a river, doesn't have so many hills. Looks like a R151 tranny swap is in the future, lol.

Oh Damn... Sorry to hear that. I guess its true what they say. Something always goes wrong when you least expect it and at the worst possible moment. Sucks.... Only difference is that for you its not just a rainy day cuz for me that would be pouring.

Hope everything gets better for you.

Sorry to hear that man.

Ford AOD it buddy. It's built for the power. Advanced adapters part. That's what I'm pretty sure that I will be doing, the swap looks do-able, and others have done it already. Marlin crawler sells the adapter also, plus they sell the t-case parts to rebuild the toy t-case to be almost bomb proof, LOL. Almost.

Sorry to hear about the tranny. I was hoping to see a picture of it at your parents place. For what good it is worth, atleast it happened fairly close to your house and not halfway on the trip.

Oh wow! SO ......grrrrrrrr! ..... Ed, I'm sorry man, that's not fun. SO MUCH WORK and that stuff always seems to happen at the worse time. ONLY... we do realize later that compared to our friends POS NISSAN PATHFINDERS, etc., etc., etc......that we're REALLY only SHOCKED because the things hardly ever give us crap! haha... But right after a HUGE slurry of work.... WHILE on the road? SUX!

Hey Flea....

Irab on here just installed one in his 93 Extra Cab...."R151F" a "22RET Manual Trans".... Which is rare, more granny gearish(better first gear for wheelin)... and a BIT stronger, according to the Toy-Trans-Pro's! lol. Well, according to anyone who knows trannies I guess you could say. It's a VERY sought after trans... Most 22RET's are Auto.... so finding a Manual is a big deal for wheelers! ESPECIALLY wheelers with MONSTERS like this, (V8 puts out LOTS more torque and can chew threw a W56 faster.... Doesn't always happen so fast, but in this case.... Must of just been ready to go anyhow, my guess.)

sorry to hear that, probably for the best to get a r151 in there tho, i think your testing the limits of the g52 with a v8 behind it! i'm just waiting for mine to tank. you probably already know this, but marlin makes an hd w56 that might be a decent option for ya too

Thanks Richard, yeah your right, things always go wrong at the worst possible time! But luckily I was able to just replace the bottom radiator hose, add some antifreeze, and drive the runner back home. I really glad I didn't have to get it towed!!! Anyway, the tranny makes noise in all gears except 4th and reverse. The PO of the 85' pickup that originally had this motor and tranny in it ran this tranny behind the 302 for 15yrs. I have no idea how hard he ran it, so I'm just thinking the G52 had enough, lol.

Hi Rockguy. I've looked into the AOD, and might eventually go that route, but for now I'm going to stick with the 5spd since I already have the bellhousing adapter.

Hi Terry. Yeah I was pretty bummed out not making it up to my parents with the 4runner. But like you said at least it happened close to home, and not 200 miles into the trip! Lol.

Hi Chef, yeah it really sucked! I've been doing a little research on NWOR site, and they make two different bellhousings, one has a "G" code and bolts to any 4cylinder 5spd the other is a "R" code and bolts up to the R151f and the R150 V6 trannies. Unfortunately I have the G code bellhousing. I'm on the hunt for a W56, hopefully I can find a good used one so I can get this thing on the road! My wife and I found a house to rent up in Colville Wa, (about 1-1/2 hrs from my parents house) so I need to get the runner drivable quick. We sign the papers next Tues!

Hi liveoffroad. Yeah I've been checking Marlins site, haven't seen the HD w56 on there, but my internet connection is hit and miss on my phone up here at my parents house, so I haven't been able to look as much as I would like, but that would definitely be an option I'm interested in!!!

Wow, that's GREAT NEWS, ED! Congratulations on the house near the 'rents'

Yeah, sux indeed on the trans.. But, why not just switch bell housings and slap in a more 'torque and power capable trans'??? NO clue as to whether that's a huge PITA or not, etc... Figure you'd probably have to pull the motor, right? Unless you can drop the trans with the Bhousing in it's new tight home with that big beast motor! Hmmm, fill me in, Mr. Ed!

Thanks Mark. We met with the owner of the house we are going to rent yesterday to sign the rental agreement. Its a two story log cabin way out in the country. When we were driving up the driveway to meet the owner we saw a moose feeding off the side of the road, not even a hundred yards from the house! We were trying to get the kids to see it, and didnt even think to take a picture, lol. Ill have to post some pics of the area once we get settled in.

Back to the 4runner, I'd like to be able to run the R151f, but to buy a different bellhousing (about $700 thru NWOR) on top of the cost of a tranny, if I could find one, just isn't in my budget right now. I'll probably just try to locate a W56 for now, there supposed to be stronger than the G52 I had in there before, and hope for the best. I just need to get it drivable for the move, since I don't have any means of towing it 4.5 hrs to the new house. Once we get settled, and money isn't so tight, Ill start looking at other "more permanent" options, lol.

NICE, .... Killer Moose'! lol. JK, ... wow, sounds INCREDIBLE! I wish I could have a summer home up there or something... I LOVE THAT COUNTRY! Again, ....'congratz!'

Yeah, I've heard that on the W56... wish mine never started tweaking out on me, lol. BUT, I can just dry shift into 4th for now.... works just fine. Just a lil harder downshifting. Anyway, I'm looking for another/or rebuilding mine for 550$ MAX at the biggest major supplier for gears down here, from what I remember... AA Gear... Anaheim Gear is supposed to do the same thing.. They do them in a day, cuz that's all they do, all day long! lol. They also pick up and deliver... So I'm apprehensive in spending 200-300$ on a used Trans when I could have mine back to like new for 550$ max.... 175$ Minimum for lets say just tearing it down and resealing it/maybe replacing one bearing or something.... It's NOT an emergency, ya know? Neither is my gremlin nor sliders.. But I'd rather get to those and the Con-Ferr mod before anything else like the trans. Yaknow?

Thanks Mark, I think we will really enjoy living up there. Sorry to hear your tranny is starting to give you problems, $550 for a full rebuild doesn't sound too bad, hopefully its not that serious and you only have to spend the minimum $175 range!

Well I been searching for a W56 tranny to replace my wasted G52. Never fails, when I need something, I can never find it, and when you don't have money you see parts you need/ want everywhere, lol. So after searching and not finding anything locally, I put an ad on CL yesterday. Today I got a response, so I went and met the guy. Unfortunately it turned out to be another G52 I checked it out anyway, everything felt smooth, I didn't hear any unusual sounds going through all the gears and in hi and low range (he was selling it with the t-case) so since I'm running out of options, and Im moving next Thursday I went ahead and bought the tranny and t-case for $350. I figure the last G52 lasted aprox 15 yrs behind the 302, according to the PO, so hopefully this one will last me until I can afford to upgrade to Marlin's HD W56. They start at $899+ $200 for the HD option. Luckily I still have my original W56 that came in the 4runner to use as a core exchange when the time comes!

I have a G52 but first gear is out of it. Otherwise I am really happy wth it. I have been studying up on trannies lately and even the possibility of rebuilding it. But from what I am learning lately on trannies is the W56 is better all the way around over a G52. But you cant swap transfer cases from one to the other. Dont understand why Toyota did that. I dont know anything on the R151s.

Atleast you will be ble to get your Runner going again. Just my have to take it easy on the skinny pedal. It stood up to the 302 for awhile as it sounds so I wouldnt be to worried.

When I win the jackpot that I never play, I am having a log cabin out in the country. This living in town is for the birds.

Hi Terry. Yeah I'm definately going to take it easy on it on the trip up to the new house! Thinking back, I think I pushed the tranny to hard on the steep inclines at freeway speeds, plus I had the runner loaded down pretty heavy with all my toolboxes, welder, etc. I was thinking on those steep inclines with a 22re I'm sure I would have had to down shift into 4th gear to try to keep my speed up. With the 302, when I felt it starting to slow a little, I just gave it more gas instead of down shifting to 4th. About the second steep incline I climbed is when I started hearing the noise in 5th gear. Not to mention I'm running 33's now, the PO had 31's... I should have known better, but it drove so smooth on the flats, that I never really gave it much thought, lol.

I hear ya on living in town! I've always lived out in the country growing up. When my wife and I first got married, we lived out in the country, but I was driving 80 miles a day for work, so we ended up buying our first house in town. That's been almost 7 yrs now, and I'm ready to get back to the country living! Ill post up some pics of the area once we get settled in.

hey ed, sounds like you made a good call on the tranny, there's always the "get it running right now and within budget" fix, and the "leave it sit for __ months/years while you save up to get what you want" fix. at least this way you have time to shop around and play your options for a stronger trans down the line

Thanks Mark. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't a W56, but getting it drivable is my top priority, lol.

Hi liveoffroad, yeah this was about my only option, it seems like I always have to take the "get it running right now and within budget" fix, lol, but being on a short time crunch, and not having any way of towing it the 4.5 hrs trip when we move pretty much made the decision for me, and since its my DD, I can't let it sit to save for the HD W56, I just hope this tranny has some life left in it! Lol.

Ha, ha, hey racerflea, yeah I was thinking that too since Ill have an xtra t-case. Ill have to do some research, I honestly don't know to much about dual t-case setups. I think you need one top shift and one forward shift t-case? Not sure, but it would be sweet to have the xtra low gearing! That will be one of those " future upgrades" I hope to do someday!
