press an seal peel an seal also known as quick roof (around here)
the opinions are everywhere on it terry swears by it for sound deadening an insulation qualities
its waterproof sticks to any clean surface ive seen Utube vids of people using it in trunks an speaker boxes to deaden down the sub shake of body panels
considering its a tar product there is a chance for smell but i have no personal experience
I do plan on eventually doing it to my runner as i live in idaho with snow and after having a 79 hylux near the road the sound deadening part is very attractive

Today was a pretty productive day. I got around to finally working on something SAS related woot! Lol
I soaked my Hy-Steer arms in Purple Power. Used a putty knife to scrape off all the old paint. Btw I found this guy didn't even primer everything I only ran into patches that were primered. Which explains why it rusted. Anyway after I scraped it all off I rubbed off as much as I could with a rag. Then what ever was still left I used a piece of sand paper(don't remembee what grit) and sanded all the rest of the stubborn paint and rust off till it was nice and clean.
Anyway here are the pix guys.
Before:

After the clean up:

All Primered up:

I did get a chance to spray paint them Black too. But by the time I got around to taking the last pix it was already dark out and the few pictures I took really looked nasty and made my paint job look crappy so ill take some better pix when there is sunlight out tomorrow.
Edit:
I managed to snap a couple of "ok" quality pictures. My phones camera is only so good lol I think I did a good job on this for it being my first time ever painting something. What do you guys think?

Yep, as I said/Dragon said... "people are ALL OVER the place on this"... I have read MANY who swear that over time and a couple blistering hot summers(100's)... the stuff not only stank but ran off the vertical and upside down panels like the trunk lid... BUT, many are like Terry, who did AN ENTIRE rig in it.... He's in Missouri.. Which I assume is hot at hell at times, right? lol.
I'm not opposed to using it in the panels in back and then taping over it with foil tape(if you've never used it... IT'S INSANE-STICKY! lol. Duct tape has NOTHING on that stuff, IOW, Richard. Not sure, but the P&S seems to stick really well also. But I can't see it hurting putting foil tape around it where it's joining the body... It would seal off any smell or at least most of it.
I really doubt, unless you live in Death Valley, that it turns into licorice soup all over the place... I just can't recommend it nor bad mouth it. I just think I'd rather use small patches of it on the larger panels and maybe inside the front door outer panels).... BUt honestly? You've heard my system, Richard... I mean, it's not competition loud or anything, i know that.. But it shakes the rear view something fierce, and I think you'd agree it's pretty loud? I don't hear ANY rattling when I'm cranking that up.
I have other noises that bother me more.. but I DO want to put SOME, MINIMAL pads here and there to absorb some vibration add density
.... But, far as my annoying noises? >>> I know the tailgate retainers are clacking away...I'ma fix that with bicycle tube
... BUT, far as the coating the entire rig.... until I run 2-12's with 1000W's or 2-15's? I don't really need to do the whole car.... Because I JUST DON'T HEAR the road noise to the point that it bothers me so much. I have 32x11.50's MT's with plenty of Tread, too... They're WAY louder than my BFG AT's... but not enough to bother me. I showed Jason today on bluetooth in the rig on that good microphone.... I was in the LOUDEST Home depot I've ever been in or outside of... people screaming right next to me... reverse beeping, ... a large rig pulling in.... I said, "Ok, listen.... " and shut the door, and he was like, "Hello?" hahaha.
I do notice a difference since putting in the ThermoShield in back. It's DEFINITELY a wee bit noticeably quieter... But again, not to the point that I was like "WOW, is this Jet Blue First Class with the engines off?", lol. Still, it DID help with the drivetrain noise and I'm SURE it will help with the exhaust heat, etc. Once I get this panel in, then coat the inside with a STRIP of Sound Deadener, tape it up, then tape in ThermoShield in the back's outer panels(the metal)... It'll be MUCH more insulated and should help a lil with some vibrations/heat seeping in through the panels
.... I'll also be doing the floor up front to some degree with ThermoShield...... It already has LOTS, at least in mine, of deadening and heat shielding material up front. BUT, .... the ThermoShield on top of it will add comfort, a lil more quiet(all that I'd need) and again, INSULATION.... Cuz that's what it is, ya know? You can put this stuff on the inside of the hood of your car, man. Hot Rodders use it all the time for the same thing.
Peal and Seal is around 18$ for 6" x 25ft. ..... If you just used patches of it in spots to add weight to thin and non-reinforced panels.. one roll might just do it, depending on what you're gonna do. OR, if you do it like RAD or Terry did, ... it'll cost ya around 100$ to coat the entire floorboards and rear panel walls. STILL very reasonable. One panel done right with Dynamat? About 50$, EASY. FATMAT is cheaper... I think, lol. And there are others .... FIRST?>>>>>>>>>

Home depot DOES NOT Carry it... But I found their version a lil less smelly.. So I grabbed that. It's called U-Seal. Also, Peal and Seal, IN LOWES? It's 18.95$ or something like that... I guess on line it's 16.50$? Whatever, it's a couple bux.. That wasn't my motivation. It felt stickier to me.. and smelled less.
Let's face it, Richard..... ALL OF THOSE like peal and seal are Asphalt. The more pricey ones like KNO KNOISE and others are 100% BUTYL... That's the crap they put in the windshields now that they are SOOOOOOOO stingy with? hahaha. A tube of it is like 45$$$$ lol
Hope that helps a lil... it should be something, like I say, "that you do ONE TIME, not every couple years", ya know?

Thanks guys! Makes me feel a lot better coming from dudes like you.
Today I don't think ill be able to get around to anything because I'm working overtime at work and I also need to make a trip to the electronics repair shop to pick up my Peavey 6505+ guitar head. That was an expensive fix too. $153 w/o tax.
__________________________________________________ __________________________________________
I thought is ask for some advice. Have any of you guys seen some additional speakers up in front of our first gen trucks apart from the 4" ones everyone has. I've been thinking a lot about speakers and I know that whenever I finally get around to the power window/new side panel project I'm gonna lose my two 6" door speakers. So I know there are speaker boxes I can put behind the front seats. But I really enjoy that loudness in the front. So I was wondering if there is any additional ways to get speakers up in front without drilling holes in my side panels cuz I dont wanna do that

doors are common place to put um the kick panels are out on toyotas not enough space behind them (fusebox ect)
if you want um out front doors are gona be your best spot you could do enclosures an makeit a very clean install though i know cutting the vinyl hurts
i dont know PO jammed 5" or something in the spots where 4" were on mine im (the frames are all bent an twisted) looking on ebay for a better set of 4" 2 or 3 way to fix it

Yea you're right. Maybe I just need a good pair of quality 4" speakers that won't blow at high volume. One thing I can do I test out some speaker covers on the interior of my panels and just use my old ones as practice. I dunno. Maybe make some sort of a speaker box to mount directly infront of my front seats(just thinking out loud with my imagination lol) we'll see what goes down. I just really really don't want to ruin a good pair of door panels.

That's a tough one, Richard...
I, for one, have a REALLY hard time even THINKING about tearing up my panels. Think about how hard it is to find stuff for these now.....RIGHT? Imagine 5-6 years from now... or even 10? (Some may laugh at that... BUT I SAY, 'If it's solid, still running well and not falling apart after 25 years? I think I got something here, and I might keep it til the day I die... I LOVE driving it that much!" hehe... HECK, .... I've had it for 12, already!
)... THAT is why I stock up on parts, etc........
ON that topic... I would consider the latest thing.... SPEAKERS IN SUCTION CUPS RIGHT ON THE WINDSHIELD!!!!
HAHAAHAHAHAHA... jk... In all seriousness.... YOU DON'T NEED speakers all up front. If you sport boxes like I have, Richard... you can put them LITERALLY on top of each other in the middle, just behind the front seats.... facing you... When you get up to 6 of 10 on dB.... you are NOT going to care enough that you're not in a lil 'speaker surrounded capsule', hahahah.
BUT MORE importantly, on the latter.... You've heard mine, up front, right? You put your ear to them at 41 on my new Deck, NO AMP to them.... They're LOUD, Richard.... and handling every watt of whatever I can get my deck to(within reason, of course, without an amp for the front 4 just yet... I've adjusted it and such to where it's SO CLEAN for me, just how I like it.... I'm not sure I'd EVER need an amp for the front 4... BUT, I have one, so I may just try it out just laying on the floor to see if I like it, ya know? And, >>>>>>>>>
ONE KEY.... You have amps, I believe, right? SOOOOOOOOO, just upgrade the dash 4" babies to INFINITY REFERENCE 4" HO/135W RMS SICKO 3 WAYS! They're like 89$, Richard... and if you don't need anything else but your 6x9's behind you.... Then get those in Boxes like I have and you'll be AMAZED at the clarity and more base they can put out! And BEST of all, IMHO... I can pull mine out on 6-7' of monster cable and slap em on the roof, ground, in the rear with the sub for a 'THEATER IN THE WOODS' effect when I'm playing my "Masque of the Red Death"/ Read by William S. Boroughs
If your rear panels are in tact? If your new fronts are as well? WHYYYYYYYYY CUT!
ONE THING I can say that might be a great idea... and I WOULD do it if it left my dash in tact.... I've seen a guy with an adapter that he put in to the 4" hole, .... then he popped 5 and 1/4" or 5" in their place.... YOU KNOW that every lil bit more helps out and such. the good thing about 4's is the SUPER clean highs you can get without being ALL HIGHS... And infinity? HOLY SMACKEREL! lol. You heard mine, and they're basic 2 way Blaupunkt 4"ers... The difference is that they're like 100W RMS.... Unlike most lil dudes up there that push around 50-65Wrms.
I don't mean to sound pushy, Richard... and I KNOW you LOVE your sounds.... And you like them how you like them. So don't think I'm suggesting, "NO WAY, you're evil if you cut your doors... I'll never talk to you again!" hahaha... I just think it's a catch 22... And personally? I think sound from just behind the front seats spaces things out a lil better... Mainly cuz around 90% of the time, I'm not pushing to the limit or 'as loud as I can get it without distortion'... 90% of the time, I'm listening to it at that "sweet spot"... REALLY clean, crisp highs that don't hurt the ears like tinnitus.... And good but not overpowering midrange... then nice SNAPPING Bass with JUST enough thump when I need it. (which is obviously in the back, lol)... That creates this 'SURROUND' type sound in these that I think is just spectacular. AND, ... the box on the ground facing up(the 6x9's ones)... it's like it's in it's own ADDITIONAL lil pocket, ya know? When I camp, I just toss them up on the platform(on top of the back seats back rests, once folded down) facing each other, just behind my head and passenger... Or even stand them up for more room, on the tips.... Gotta say... for 20$ for a pair of them.... it's worth a try, ya know?
Far as the fronts... look for those adapters for in the dash speaker holes.... Because I KNOW 5-1/4's FIT IN BEHIND THOSE GRATES(they just tear up the dash if you try to mount them flush, right? haha).... I think you just need an adapter. GOTTA be lots who've needed to do that cuz they wanted bigger but liked where they were/Or those who just didn't have ANYWHERE ELSE, like in smaller older cars, ya know?
Maybe you could grab something like this, cut it to fit(the screw holes will)... Then mount a SMALL MDF or otherwise ring on top and through it.. then mount your 5.25" from Infinity or 4Way Pioneers on sale at Pep Boys last week for 39$ a pair, etc...... ?????? >

Grab one and come over here, Richard... I have 2 compressors waiting for you to plug it in! lol.

Yeah, and/or a Dremmel.... Those sanding drums work AWESOME! You could put them in the holes and just POOF, done! lol. And a nice softer flap disc on an angle griner? yes! Or better, a Dye Grinder

As for updates:
Last night i hit up the local Home Depot and bought me 2 pieces of particle board for my door panel restoration. Some 90 Adhesive spray, and some black sillicone for putting on that chrome 4runner windshield boarder. I might need to go to harbor freight and buy some drill tips for the door panel holes.
#674
Sure man, .... just give me notice, I'll gladly give you a hand or lend my tools/compressors, etc. you know that.
Just haven't had much time lately... BUT, that fluctuates back and forth, ya know?

Thanks man ill make sure to take you up on that one.
BTW I was planning on buying some wire brush drill tips like you said for the clean up.
I need to look for my dads tips for drilling different size holes and I need to buy some small saws or something for cutting out the original door panel holes. We have a jigsaw that will cut through it like butter, but I might need something smaller to do the smaller holes. I don't know. im gonna have to see when I begin the project. I'm just glad I found a harbor freight store near my parents house now so that's gonna be a nice convenience to have near in case I need to buy stuff.
I plan to begin the door panels today. Gonna clean up the carpet material on it and wipe down the plastic material. Then if I have time I'm gonna trace and cut out the holes. If the panels dry up by the time im done drilling then ill try to mount on the plastic carpet door material. And use that spray and staple gun. To get it to stay. I also bought some clamps to keep it all tight as it dries. And hopefully it'll be ready by tomorrow. Then the next thing will be to see how the switches work with power and ground so I know how exactly to wire everything together.
Wish me luck guys. This one is gonna be a fun project.

Don't cut your front door panels for speakers that you're going to restore, you have PLENTY of space in the rear to put some nice sounds. You're going to put a lot of work into it and will have that factory look again, don't ruin it.

Lol Grego... I wasn't going to hahaha. I was saying I don't want to do that. I was just asking if there were any other ways to make up for those lost speakers not being on my doors because I don't wanna cut into these door panels. Which I don't plan to do lol.

Ditch the 6.5's and slap 4" Infinity Reference in the Dash and 6x9's behind ya on the floor... The boxes for the 6x9's are 20$ on sale in some stores... Then you can move them around, like me
hahaha. Also, you could always permamount them if you wanted. I totally agree with grego on this one... and I guess I misread you as well("trace for the holes") <><<??? hahahaa.
BTW, ... people fit back there just fine, with plenty of foot room, with my speakers on the floor, leaning up against the side walls

PS> A good way to cut on those panels is a Razor... It takes a lil longer.. but once you cut enough, you can just 'POP' the pieces out. Ask grego though... maybe he has a different idea. You CAN just drill the corners, ... then use a really small hacksaw blade and cut around. Be careful with power tools on this stuff though... it's not like my tailgate. That is 1/4", what you have, I'm guessin, is not. If it is, and you can make it fit, GREAT idea! If not, again, be careful, as that stuff may be stronger than your old soggy ones... but it still breaks up if you hit it too hard with saws, etc. A rotary saw blade for a mini drill works well too.You can use them in your drill(they are like 3$ for 5 sizes at HFreight.
