Redeth's 1989 4Runner Resurrection
#641
Alright guys I've been trying so hard to upload some updates but its extremely hard for me to do so lately. As of last week I've been at my parents house and they recently canceled their internet to upgrade to a way faster service and speed but unfortunately we won't have internet till about Thursday this week. And my phone gets absolutely no service in their house and barely service out in the yard. I don't get it, so till then I just gotta put up with it.
But just a little update here. I met up with Grego on Saturday and we hit up the Anaheim and Stanton pick your part junk yards. And I spent some serious cash that day. He took me to the 1st gen 4runner where I found the mother load of parts for my truck. I will post up the 15 minute video that I made on Saturday for you guys so you can see everything I bought, but until then ill just type it out.
This is what I bought from the 1st junk yard:
1) Front Door panels with the lights on them
2) The electric window motors for both doors
3) the door wiring for the power windows and power mirrors.
4) All the wires that run through the dashboard that connect to my doors and down in to my fusebox. (Not sure what that is called exactly.
5) the interior door handle sockets that go into my my doors, all 3 of them.
6) Mint condition dual middle compartment off a 92 pickup(i think). I got a couple extras that Gregory included(thank you) I will explain on the video.
7) dome light cover
8) electric window switches for both doors and power window switch.
9) mint condition spark plug wire holders that mount on to the 3vze motor.
10) A decent set of left and right rear side panels
11) a mint condition climate control face that I plan to clean up and sell. (Hit me up if you want it anybody)
12) a bunch if miscellaneous Toyota screws, nuts, fuses
13) 1st and 2nd gen "4runner plates" that mount on to my rear end.
14) rear window interior squeegie piece(still need the clips to hold it on.
15) A/C button and wiring
16) passenger side power window(driver side was already taken)
17) Perfect condition Gray steering column.
18) I bought Grego an altimeter bracket as my gratitude for him helping me out for 5 hours day we had at both junk yards. Unfortunately the altimeter was already gone.
19) new or better condition then mine MapLight.
I know I got more stuff but I can't think of it off he top of my head atm. I'll attempt to upload my 15min14second video on YouTube again hopefully it doesn't fail. But that's all I got for now. I'll upload the video ASAP.
BTW all of the stuff I bought came out to $324 total.
And I also bought a set of duralast windshield wipers for my truck for $30pair.
Yea it was an expensive weekend shopping trip. But this is the first intact 1st gen I've seen in over 1&1/2 years so I had to get the stuff. Need to take advantage of the situation while you can ya know.
I would have had a rear 1st gen 4runner carpet too but that ended up being taken when we arrived.

Thanks Outsane. I have absolutely no idea how to do the power window conversion. I'm gonna do some research on it as soon as I get internet at home. However, I do know that I am gonna have to drill one 1" hole on both my doors and into the body of my truck so I can run the wires through that space where the doors open and close. That was one difference I seen between the truck me and Greg pulled the parts off of to mine. Was because mine is originally manual and it didn't have the holes that the junk yard truck had.
Not only that but I'm gonna have to remove the whole odometer, dash everything to run the wires underneath it properly. And you'll see in the video that it is a good ammount of wire and about 6ft long.
I will be getting to all of this stuff soon. I just need to reserve a weekend install everything. I am definitely gonna need help on this project. Gonna have to see if my dad or Mark wanna help with this stuff. And gonna have to take a look at Grego's build again to see his door panel restoration process too.
So far I have already cleaned up and assembled the whole middle compartment with the better parts of each and installed it. Put on my dome light cover, installed the rear side panels, and my steering column cover. I'm saving the hardest for that reserved weekend.

DUDE, SCORE! Congratulations!
Great console! ......... Nice PANELS! .... all of em, lol. ESPECIALLY stoked for you to get a column cover... WOOT!
I HAVE LOOKED FOR YEARS for a solid/undamaged rear window up/down seal! Great find, Richard
I might have a mirror for ya.... The right side one I have is tight....... So it probably wouldn't make sense pulling off the mirror face(which is part of the whole attachment). I'll talk to ya about it. (did you grab the mirror control switch? I might have missed that when the phone rang, hahaha. )
Sorry she jabbed you to death on every lil piece....
......... But ALL of it is a good find-haul!
Very cool of you, Grego... good lookin out!

Thanks Mark and yes I did get the mirror control switch for the dash.
And yes Thank you again Grego. I really did appreciate you taking time off your day to help me out for the 4-5 hours this past Saturday. And thanks for giving me those extras I definitely put then to use.
Mark: are you talking about your old power mirrors? And dude its so true that woman must have been in a bad bad bad BAAAD mood. Talk about taking it to the limit on "tight-ass-ness" and it sucks so bad because what I didn't end up buying stayed there in the bin off to the side of the cashier. That metal bin that they throw stuff in. And it ain't like it gets taken back to the truck like go backs at stores. That stuff must all go to the trash or something. Which is what really ticked me off. Oh well. I'm happy with what I got still.

Hey Richard... Well, I have an extra passenger side one I'm not using... My driver original was toast. (Parts in there can break and there's no fixing them)... BUT, if you keep them up and keep the screws tightened on occasion, BUT NOT TOO TIGHT.... they're AWESOME TO HAVE! LOVE not having to roll down my window pass side and then move the mirror while it's raining/in the dusty trails, lol.

Mark, I agree with you. After driving my truck for 2 weeks while my car was out for the clutch job then going back to my car I seen how nice it is to just push the button and BAM its like "let there be wind" lol especially on my driver side window the window mechanism got even worse so good thing I got the replacement this weekend.
As for yoyr extra mirror, wow thanks a lot for your offer. I'll take it off your hands. You're right no need to break mine when you have one available right.

Nice seeing you on Saturday Richard....glad I could help. You got your work cut out for you, that's for sure. But that $324 of stuff should keep you busy for quite some time and preventing you from going to the yards and spending more $$$$.
And yes, that woman was crazy...never met anyone so nit picky and interested in peoples oil/dirt covered parts. If there wasn't such a long time period between now and the half off sale, I would have suggested hiding the parts in the yard and wait. But being a month from now, anywhere you put it would have likely gotten destroyed before you could retrieve it.

excellent! let me know how much an a paypal i get paid on the 3rd lets see if i can fix'er up if not perhaps new switches ahh the ideas

Sure, just give me your mirror with the missing glass, k? I'll fix it. Often, the frame is broken and the glass is fine, when I RARELY see them... So I don't want you tossing that, k?

Sounds good Mark. Thanks a lot for that. I can't wait to get started on this power window/mirror project. I'm so anxious. But I wanna have those 2 door panels rebuilt before I start. Hoping to do the door panel job sometime this week. I just need to buy the material for it.

Richard, if you're existing panels are in good shape except for the speaker cut outs I would consider just filling the hole rather than making a whole new board, you'll save tons of time and not lose any look, feel, or quality of the panel.
1. Remove and clean the new panel skin and air dry
2. Remove old panel skin and top pad and throw away
3. Trace the speaker holes onto new board and cut out
4. Staple or tape the cut outs to the existing panels
5. Apply P&S to the back of the panel to further reinforce the hole and support the cut out, and for additional sound dampening. Or glue some closed cell foam stuff instead of P&S. Use whatever mark is using since he did all the research for you already! hahahaha
6. Apply headliner foam to the front of the panel
7. Staple/Glue new skin to fixed board
8. Clip on new pad to top of door panel
I remembered what I wanted to give you, the door lock trim pieces from a camry. I remembered seeing those pieces cracked on the new top pads on the panels. You can also grab them from the yard from any 86-91 camry (along with other toyota vehicles around that era also I'm sure).

Hey, Grego.... i have Chrome door handles in Gray Trim from 86-91 Camry... Would those fit in mine? I thought I was looking at both of mine and those side by side and felt they were different. BUT, maybe the pocket portion of them are fine is what you're saying, in place of the OEM cracked ones he has?
I was going to use mine in my doors to give it that flashy look, Chrome handles, etc. You have those, right?

Ohhhh, ... well lah tee dahhhhhhhhh!
hahaha...
Ok, yeah, I have those as well. I feel like I tried them on my 1st Gen from a Camry.....and had fitment issues. Seems like the piece that glides up and down in that thing is VERY snug...IIRC>... I could be wrong. I'll have to try them again. They're nice. And I have the door handles on the inside/chrome handle and gray pocket portion... I think his is broken too. He should grab some of those. BTW.... can you imagine how much rain damage just took out SO MANY parts at the yards?
haha. All the cars that CAT's hid in during the raining? OH MY ....... :puke: lol.

Lol Mark u make me laugh.
Greg my particle board on my current door panels are all messed up already. Completely useless and very flimsy from all the self tapping screws this PO used on my truck. Also you guys mentioned P&S what is that short for? Those little lock pieces you posted are missing on my truck. Thanks for pointing that out man I totally missed that before you mentioning I need it lol

P&S is "Peel and Seal"... It's a Tar backed/aluminum sheet front self sticking roll of roof and other carpentry sealing stuff. Some guys use it instead of Dynamat, etc. Some say their rigs REEK after using it and if it get's hot.. Some say they don't smell a thing, even in hot climate(I think if you use foil tape to seal off all the edges, ..that would help LOTS)... AND SOME SAY, "it gets hot and slides off", lol.... Again, HD Foil Tape. I have some of that stuff for repairing leaking water hoses? HOLY CRAPLUA, Richard... That stuff is SOOOOOOOOOO STICKY! lol. Expensive too... BUT, I think that the main reason it's used for roofing and such is because it's got such good reflection of heat... So, it doesn't degrade as fast outdoors, etc., ya know?
