School is a handful but you will be glad to get thru it when done. Hope I never need your services, but if I ever do, I hope the people that got to get me fixed back will have your passion to get me healed. It is a field that is not going to go away and will have a solid future for you and will have the option to go about anyplace in the country you might would like to.

I miss the CB days. I only knew a few of the 10 codes. Not sure how they ever came up with that and how memorize all of them. I will eventually get on in each of my trucks again someday as they are handy to have and when traveling in pairs.

Hey everybody. I hope everyone is doing great. I just wanted to get you all updated. I passed my classes this term with two A's Math class with a 94% grade, surgical technology lab with a 96%, and my Hardest class, Pathophysiology, was passed borderline "A" I got 89.67% almost another A. Oh well. All good. That bumps me up to an over GPA of 3.5 which puts me on the honor roll at school now. Great news for resumes if I can hold that gpa. Next I mentioned that I was on the run to become student ambassador for the surgical technology department of my class. Well I was approved by three teachers and the director of the department. So I have officially been the student ambassador for a little over a month now. As for my girlfriend Faby goes, she finished her Makeup school about a month to 2 months ago already. So she is officially certified and can work anywhere now. She is actually looking for work now and has done many side jobs already. Most have been free due to needing to build up her resume.
Here is her work on me for this Past Halloween. She did a wicked job!

So far all has gone great academically for the both of us. I have 11 more months of school to go!
--------------------------------------------------------

Now as for the truck goes. Maybe you guys have read on Chefyota4x4's profiles but He and i were both chosen to represent the entire yotatech website for a sponsored BFG off road trip for for the release of the NEW BFG KO2 tires from Barstow Ca to Las Vegas Nv. Everything paid for minus gasoline. This has been some of the greatest news to receive and one of the coolest recognitions I've ever had for this rig. So Mark and i booked everything for this trip. Everything was good to go. And then the 3vze issues began pouring in one after another. Talk about the worst timing ever. I found a tiny drip of antifreeze leak every now and then toward the rear of of the engine I scared to see if it would. Be a head gasket issue; It was a very slow leak. and upon looking for this leak i noticed 2 hoses that needed replacing. One which goes from intake plenum to the check valve on firewall followed by the brake booster (this hose was cracked and allowed a minor vacuum leak) the next line was from power steering pump vacuum line to the plenum. And that line was puffed up or inflamed causing the line to collapse when under suction. So I replaced both vacuum lines. And then a whole series of issues began coming up. After I fixed those hoses I think I may have brought an issue to light that had been there for a while and by fixing the vacuum leak maybe I worsened the problem. I really have no clue. But what happened after the fix was I began having a really horrible cold start issue. To where it goes from 800 rpm to 200rpm. Nearly turning off. Smoke comes out of the exhaust. (Black smoke) smells rich in gasoline or burnt fuel. The weird thing is that it runs horribly for the first few minutes. Until it finally warms up and idles. Then it will drive fine. But it does get that cold start issue every time the truck has sat for a few hours. One more issue is that i noticed the gas pedal gets lightly stuck at cold start too. Not difficult to remove, I just gotta step on the gas a little to get it to come loose again. That may not be related bit still something to keep in mind. Another thing I noticed is that my truck went from getting 15.3mpg to 10.2mpg. That was a loss of nearly a 55-60 miles per tank of gas. I have no clue what is was so I took it to Chef's house where we fixed the small antifreeze leak(which ended up being a loose hose near the cluster of sensors in in the back), I replaced all 6 spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor. We also replaced all the hoses that looked a little compromised with worn ends or that didn't fit quite tight. Also used nice Toyota clamps to hold everything tightly in place. After we put the truck back together and fired her up we found the antifreeze issue was fixed but the cold start issue was still there.

So here is a few things that Chef and I did.

● We tested egr and found it worked fine. It would stall with about 5-10 lbs of vacuum.

● We checked the check valve for the brake booster and found it works. As well for the AS check valve (orange one) for smaller vacuum line and that was working as well.

● Swapped in new Spark plugs/wires, distributor cap/rotor

● Changed many old hoses (vacuum hoses and coolant hoses) and capped(plugged) the power steering ports under plenum.

● We checked for blown head gasket by using a "combustion leak-block tester" from NAPA auto parts. And found I did not have a blown gasket.(This tool/test is supposed to reveal if you have a Cracked head, warped head, cracked block, and Leaky Gasket[including head gasket])
------- and I have since checked with this tool one more time and the results still came back negative for combustion leak into coolant---------

●We connected all my vacuum hoses according to videos and pix that a few Instagram users sent me and according to Toyota fsm parts department diagrams.

☆☆☆After we put everything back together and finally started up the engine we found...☆☆☆
● It still runs like crap on cold start
● It makes a whining or howleing noise from in front of the engine around water pump area; only on cold start (Note:Water Pump was replaced during engine rebuild almost 3 years ago) We did listen with a stethoscope and it didn't sound bad. It sounded to be working properly.

● Strong gas smell from exhaust on cold start and lots of smoke when accelerated. (Mark says it smells very rich. High in hydrocarbons[unburnt fuel])

● Almost sounds like it's running on 4 cylinders for the first couple of minutes (like a missfire)

● When I would give it gas we got a smoke cloud.

● After a few minutes we found truck idles to normal rpm (and truck is warm). And seems to run and sound perfectly fine. But continues to burn lots of gasoline. (This was found by calculating gas usage by filling up 2 gas tanks and seeing odo mileage)

● It still runs like poop on cold starts maybe it was just coincidence when we first fired it up but it sounded like a really bad miss fire almost like it was running on 4 cylinders until it finally warmed up, idled, then got enough gasoline in the system. After that it ran perfect again.

I'm thinking it's gonna be some sort of sensor that is related to cold start or something else or something else in the gas/exhaust system. Because I don't smell a sweat smell at all coming from the exhaust. And there isn't any white smoke. It is black and smells rich in gas.

Here is a video I made the day after we went to Marks house. This shows everything upon cold start and how it acts. And you can see how it begins to sound normal-ish once it idles and engine warms to normal operating temperature.

This isn't all. Just about 3 days ago I came home from my girlfriends house and noticed I was leaking coolant off the bottom passenger side of my radiator. So I'm assuming something is causing pressure in my antifreeze some how causing the radiator to bust instead if a gasket in the engine. And if you watch the YouTube video you can clearly see at the very end of the video that the coolant pours out and then slowly continues to flow out while it's is running.

If you are curious to see what I used to test the head gasket leak, cracked head, Uneven gasket surface, broken head studs/bolts. I used the Combustion Leak Block Tester by NAPA Auto Parts
Shown in this link.

Did you pull any codes? I didn't see where you mentioned it, but maybe I missed it.

Your dash pot that you flick in the video(although I think you called it the TPS) may be the issue. try disconnecting it and plugging the vacuum line that is connected. My 88 doesn't have the dash pot which IIRC is used to slow the butterfly on the throttle from slamming shut.

You are running rich, but that may be to a faulty temp sensor in the back of the engine. If the truck thinks it is cold, it will run rich till up to operating temp.

Your coolant issue seems normal in the video. But that doesn't mean that it isn't leaking elsewhere. And wasn't that coolant hot? perhaps the thermostat hadn't opened yet, you can't trust the dash gauge for operating temperature.

good luck

Sorry I just seen this just now.
We checked for codes and nothing came up.

You know what, you're not the first person to suspect the Temp sensor. I have replaced a ton of sensors on this thing but that one is not one of them. So I may need to buy one just to see ya know?

I have had suggestions such as temp sensor, TPS, dash pot, and the base portion of the distributor.

As for the coolant coming out. Nah it wasn't hot yet. You can see in the video that the truck had only been on for the duration of the video. That was a cold start. It sat for nearly 14 hours.

She lives!!!! Last week all we did was change out the leaky radiator for a new one. We found that my coolant system barely had any circulation thanks to the aftermarket thermostat. So we ran the truck without a thermostat to see if it the water pump was working at all. This test confirmed that the water pump did circulate. Once we did this test I had my girlfriend my girlfriend Faby run to the Toyota store to get me an OEM thermostat. Then installed it and found I had great circulation! I'm sure this wasn't the issue of what was going on though. This was just one of 2 issues. ------------------------------------------------------------ As for my cold start issue went. (Prior to changing out the thermostat) we fired up the truck after replacing the radiator and found it still ran like crap. Then mark wanted to test the spark plug wires buy unplugging one at a time. And he removed the #3 spark plug wire from the distributor cap and all of a sudden it ran much better. As he brought the spark plug closer to the distributor cap the connection obviously got better and then he plugged it back in and it was all better out if nowhere. It was almost as if he gave the truck a shock to wake the hell up. We still don't know what happened. But it starts up perfect now. And it runs great. I'm puzzled by what it was but at this point I'm just happy it works now. Thanks to all the people who helped me out troubleshooting these issues I really appreciate all your help guys. I'll keep everyone updated if any issues come back. ------------------------------------------------------- Oh yea and with my a multimeter we tested out my coolant temp. Sensors in the back firewall where the cluster of sensors are and they are all working group properly according to specs.

the business with the plug wire could have blown off carbon an corrosion inside the cap tween the terminals an rotor also could have caused a spark tween the plug an the head improving its ground

That'd the thing. I had already replaced the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and the rotor after I first got this problem. And when I replaced them I noticed it didn't change anything with the way the truck was running. There couldn't have been carbon build up because those parts were brand new and it didn't fix the issue.

i donno man used to find dead ow weak cylinders that way engine would make a noticeable decline in rpms with a good one an near nothing with a weak one its how them high tech sun pro machines would do it electronically why it would bring the engine back up from being a problem... not a clue

Here is a video I made of our recent off-road trip. This was a sponsored trip put together by Internet bands and Sponsored by BF Goodrich Tires. This event, named RocksToRiches, began in Barstow, CA Nov 14th and we traveled 180-190 miles off-road through the Mojave National Preserve to end up at the New York, New York Hotel in Las Vegas on Nov 15th. We headed back home to Los Angeles afterward on Sunday Nov 16,2014. This was such a fun experience. And although I was invited to bring my own truck I could not take it due to mechanical issues that weren't fixed in time. But luckily Nolan, the guy putting together this trip, allowed me and my girlfriend Faby To come along anyway while allowing My buddy JohnnyBoy to come along in my place to help Chefyota4x4 Represent our Yotatech.com forum.

ENJOY
