Couple updates:

- Doing an oil change currently on my truck ( fumoto oil drain valves are nice, best 20 ish dollars ever

- had a little mishap on the freeway today while going to the pet store... my truck likes to over heat at freeway speeds? I automatically assumed theres an air pocket/bubble in the cooling system. I turned on the heater ( 76 or something out today ) and roll down all my windows and it drove nicely, and didn't over heat.

- Bought a new CV joint, 10-w30 castrol GTX High mileage and a fram oil filter at O'reily today. So i'll probably swap that out either tonight, or this weekend. ( isn't it funny how all your IFS crap starts breaking when you decide to finally SAS? )

 

That oil valve, do you know if it comes in bigger sizes than the stock drain bolt? I'm hoping I can get a bigger one, and tap out my oil pan for it to stop my terrible leak lol

 

I think it comes in one size. you type in your vehicle, and it gives you two options, one with no nipple and one with it. :/ If I were you, i'd just swap out the oil pan ( relatively easy to do if the diff isn't there, just regear and lock it while its out )

 

just swapped my passenger CV joint... both are now brand new.

 

Put some floor mats in the truck. got them off craigslist for 50 bucks. they're actually intended for a 2004 tacoma double cab, but they fit pretty good.

it still has highway overheating issues. but they disappear when i have the heater on. So im thinking its just an air bubble. I'll fiddle with it when its not raining outside ( its been pouring for like 2 days ) Yeah, Im getting stuff done! haha the winch is fun. my next project is the SAS. ( im trying to save the tires and brakes as long as I can so i dont have to replace them before the SAS ) so im trying to time it right.

How's the FJC coming along? you haven't posted pictures or a build yet!

Yeah 2nd gen use to heat up like that I had to do the same thing. I change the radiator and was good for a bit, then it would do it when sitting in traffic. So I decided to clean the little coolant hoses in the back of the block and that helped.

Yeah its been pouring. lol All of the creeks are flooded.

Yeah im gonna burp the system again and see what i can do. I forgot to turn the heater on full blast when i burped it the first time. probably didn't work out so well.

haha yeah, I dont mess around with water not without a snorkel, at least. Any mods on the FJC yet? your rear bumper is still holding up i've put it through its paces. lol

 

Yeah I've been thinking about picking up one of those... So far I've done some little add-on's here and there
- sun visors just above each door
- toyota - garmin nav kit
- 3" Suspension Lift
- Bronze Countersteers that I have to go pick up soon
- looking for more aggressive tires and sliders next

another thing to look at for running hot at highway speeds would be anything that could block air flow. that bumper doesnt look like it gives much air flow and the huge off road lights block off almost the entire front end

 

thats another thing i was itching at. but the radiator i had before worked just fine with the winch, bumper and lights installed. AND it had a leak in the bottom of it.

The only things that have changed is new radiator, and no shroud.

 

You had your motor rebuilt right? Do you know what kind of HG was used? Just a thought.... Although honestly their may be nothing really wrong other than a poorly designed cooling system. I use to have to do the heater thing all the time but it ran perfectly fine and never actually overheated. Before and after new Radiator, water pump, temp switch, hoses, etc,etc...

You may be right about having to burp it a bit...
On another note what runs have you done lately??

 

put the shroud back on. it's there for a reason.

 

Its got a whole new top end with about 8k miles on it. the timing belt and water pump were all done at the same time. The gasket is from Toyota.

Yeah, Im gonna pop the shroud back on and see if that helps. I also now have an oil leak on the back side of the oil pan /facepalm. 3vz's cant stay in good condition for any length of time, i swear. If its not the valve covers leaking, its the oil pan. Back to carrying a quart of oil with me in my engine bay.

 

It also has a slightly larger diameter tube and is a heavier / thicker wall than the pickup axle and will not be prone to bending like the pickup axles. It also comes with cross over steering. Yes it is IFS width 58.5" WMS which is a perfect match for IFS trucks.

A superb choice. I don't know why more people don't use these for hilux and Tacoma SAS swaps. You get a little less ground clearance under the pumpkin and it weighs a bit more but it is 9.5" R&P and a lot stronger. Plus as you mentioned better front breaks.

I am in the process of installing a FJ60 axle under my 1984 pickup camper and eventually will do the same on my 1992 pickup, and match it up with a 2000 Tacoma rear axle.

I look forward to following along and seeing how yours turns out. So far I have not seen anyone else doing this swap.
