That was even with a 2500 cfm fan? Crazy. I read your post earlier about which radiator you had, but you think you coppied the info wrong. What size of rad did you end up getting?

Beautiful pic by the way. Awsome view, thanks for sharing

Is your thermostat good? I swapped a 4.3 vortec into my runner and am running dual fans and a V8 aluminum radiator and I was over heating. I filled the coolant system up with water and blew it out with an air compressor a few times, and discovered some built up gunk in it. Tried running it and it still over heated after the built up gunk was cleared out. replaced the thermostat, and water pump since it was convenient to replace, and now its titties. Cant get it to overheat anymore.
Word of caution, DON'T order a new radiator from jegs. I ordered a $375 radiator and the outward port was on the opposite side it needed to be on. And they offered to fix the issue with a $50 gift card to their store-i had to take an already pricy radiator to a professional metal shop and pay for jegs mistake

Whoever asked for the red shifter nobs, they are still available

Crap, where am I gonna get that. I didn't get the interior wiring with my engine...

You got an extra one? Lol
it should still work with out the tdcl .. its just the connector on the engine doesnt have the check engine wire to it ..

but you should still be able to check at the ecu ..

and i think i do have a tdcl ill check when i get home ..

The radiator size was correct in the post, other than the fact that it is a two row, instead of a single row.

Thanks for enjoying the pic. I took it with my phone, lol.

The cooling system passages were/are clear, and I installed a new t-stat and water pump when I replaced all the service/maintenance parts before I installed the engine. The coolant level is topped off and there is the proper amount of coolant in the reservoir. The problem only appears when there is a heavy load on the engine when going up hill at low speeds.
edit: the fan is on while it is overheating up the hills too...

I can only assume that this is a problem with venting heat out of the engine bay, since I can travel for miles up the mountain passes at 60+ and the temp gauge doesn't budge. I am thinking of installing a hood vent or louvers or something to get the heat out. This engine is massive and is basically a brick wall just 2" behind the radiator.

Yeah, looking over the diagrams, I shouldn't need the TCDL connector, but I will not be able to use a scan tool without it. However, I still can't pull flash codes.

I did check at the ECU, and I have no voltage and no ground at the L/Y wire for the MIL. Hmmm.... I guess I'll order another ECU at some point and give it a shot.

But I did average 22 mpg on the way back over Stevens Pass. This engine sips fuel on the freeway, and drinks the bejezus out of it in town. lol

my gl dose that in the heat under heavy load going up hill it hver heats like a mother. nothing like going 40 up hill in 90 dagree weather with the heat on full blast to keep it from over heating. i will also do it if i have the a/c on under hevy load on the highway doind 80. the only thing i have thought of it being is a bad air flow through the radiator with even as inefficient is my cooling system on that thing is.

did you do a shroud for your fan. i know that will help alought. when i get my cooing system hooked up im gonna run 4 900 cfm fans i think they are.

Dunkin I talked with shaggy and he said you capped the coolant line that is located next to the timing cover on the driver side. Do you have any pics of the way you capped it?

I don't have any good pictures that I can access at the moment. I left the truck at home today and drove the Subie in, so I'll take and post a picture tonight for you.

I just got a hose cap and used a hose clamp to secure it to the tube though. I was half tempted to install the expansion tank somewhere, but decided against it since I was able to use the stock overflow tank.

I've got 1200 miles on the swap now, with no leaks from it. I'll be keeping an eye on it though.

Turns out I am a dumbass for trusting the wring on this fan...
I was adjusting the TPS and idle switch last night again, and as it was idling the fan came on like it was supposed to. However, I noticed there was no airflow behind the radiator. The damn thing was wired as a puller! Easy fix, I just revered the motor leads and now it's working.

I want to get out and go up some steep hills at slow speeds and test it out. Maybe I don't have to cut a hole in my new hood.

Wow, that might be some inadvertently found good news, eh? lol Sweet!

Can't wait to see some 'ACTION' video of the 'hill climbing', etc. Is it quick man?

Thanks Chef! Btw, glad to read that you found your problems!

I am going to Moses Lake this weekend to play in the dunes, so I should have some vid to upload for next week. But, the testing will all be done on city streets, since I have to drive an hour to get offside anywhere.

I love the power of this truck. 20-65 mph is all in second gear and a ton of fun.

Holy Crapoli! Really? That's pretty nice acceleration action, bud! lol. Wow, .....I'm impressed. What kinda mileage you getting?

Interested to see if that solves all your heating up issues!

And thanks, I sure hope I FIND THEM ALL this time! LOL. Can't have expected myself to have found all the INNER stuff he did wrong....ya know? But then, that's the WHOLE POINT of having someone 'DO IT FOR YOU FOR LOTS OF CASH!' HAHAHA.

I've been getting 22 on the freeway, and between 12-15 in the city (I like to listen to the engine, so the mileage suffers, haha)

How is your swap coming along toyman?
An yeah dunkin I thought it was a little wired that a fan that moves that much wasn't keeping it cool.

I'm really just throwing this out there, ...not suggesting I know much about this swap/motor, etc., lol. ....

** Is it most likely that your fan was running all the time because the truck was running warmer .....which was only warmer cuz the fan was running reverse, which set off the sensor which turned on the fan????? Oh forget it! lol. Jk, you know what I mean, .......right?

Can't wait to hear "It's fine now.... no overheating!" I'd hate to hear HG or something like that man! (and,...I HEAR YA on the "like to hear it", lol... My 5.0 was the same way, with a Paxton...SICK HONEY TO THE EARS! HAHAHA)

Nah, it's not a head gasket. The ONLY time I have even seen it get warm what when I was slowly climbing the hill to Chelan Butte. The fan WAS on for that journey, and I was only going 15-20 mph. I am now thinking that at that speed, and with the fan wired backwards (correct according to the diagram for a "pusher fan"- remember kiddies, always double check this crap, ) - was basically equaling out to zero airflow.

I have the thermal sensor installed right at the lower radiator hose neck, and it had cycled properly before, just basically not doing any work though.

Thank god that this radiator does it's job with the proper amount of air flow. For example, I went over Stevens Pass (apx 4000' elevation) in 5th gear at 70 mph without a hitch...
