WOOT parts came in thank you terry! um but i didnt need the mud dauber wasps them nearly ready to buzz grubs went down the garbage disposal LOL

anyhow the rear handle arrived ive disassembled it all steel parts are in a smaller bucket sized electrolysis tank an already after just 3 hours are nearly totally rust free the one license plate light had some scaly rust i took it touched it an it all fell right off

do like electrolysis!

polished up the plastic an the rubber bits the clear covers for the lights all sparkling clean my lock ready to go in i think i might touch up the Toyota on it couple scuffs on the white letters

kris said he wants to fix the rust holes under the tailgate hinges then after paint the tailgate with its final coat this weekend YAY

i might get my tail gate back together before im sidelined for several weeks from the surgery on thursday the 16th hole in mah foot has gotten a bit bigger but like a nurse at the hospital said sometimes the lesser wound has to be ignored for overall health an my blood pressure is better now that ive been active walking around doing things just hate the danged if i do danged if i dont effect

OK so i went out an started cleaning my parts out of electrolysis had to leave one of the stand offs in there for a bit longer

an heres what scaley rust can do ow..but its okay the electrolysis leaves NO rust left to continue the damage so i cleaned them up put some tape inside to make a smooth surface an fiberglass bondo'd the holes smoothing the outside off nicely

primer, paint an oooh sexy shiney sealed metal no more rust...

touched up the toyota letters so quick sanding after masking tape

painted an left to bake in the warm sun oh more of the lights housings gettin warm in the sun all day as the silver inside is high temp paint needs a bit of warm to set up good

all ready to reassemble

BUT WAIT

theres MORE!

so! kris comes out an we start looking at the runner he says well if im gona fix the rust in the pockets under the tailgate hinges we best yank the bumper
we were both incredibly surprised how easy it came out!

showing the rust near the tail that needed to be cut out we were also both very pleased how solid the rear area is on both sides yes still lots of rot around the wheel arches but these areas are remarkably solid

after loosing the bumper, Kris joked hey look the springs arent flat no more LOL

the plastic sides all 4 bolts in each snapped off not one saved "sigh"
so i then went after the drivers side with a wirewheel as he got his mig welder set up the drivers side corner was caved in so we welded a washer on it several times in different spots to use the slide hammer to pull it out where it would be far better for duraglassing

some shots of the work minor patching an welding a body seam after cleaning the rust out of it

an then how bad the hidden rot was on the drivers side it all got cut out an then patched
from the outside:

from the inside under the tail gate hinge mounting point

patch being welded in

the corner the holes are from the weld being too good but we got the corner back out where it belongs kris filled the holes up an will fix some small pinholes that came open when i ground things flat an sanded the corner clean

heres the patch 4 1/4" x 2 1/2" 3/4 bend not a full 90 degree bend i did dang good making that patch for Kris to weld in polishes claws

after Kris called it a night i went on an using a torch with vice grips an Pen oil got all 8 broken off bolts out so we can put the side plastic back on later three of the pains in my ringgear! NOT ONE came loose without a heat wrenching then vice grips an cranking on them till they moved an then a 1/6th of a turn at a time they were twisted out fighting all the way

i am now officially tired an very dirty...

You are doing a great job in getting it straight again. Great work, that is what I like seeing.

I trying to export them dirt dobbers out of here so they leave my trucks alone. lol I was suprised to see they were still alive. Sorry about that. You got that tailgate piece looking great.

:-D no worries terry it was fine an thank you though we arent using factory paint the rustolium royal red is a perfect match and its a tough paint also seals rust keeps it from getting oxygen which helps it make more rust

ill have to see if i can get some of our rock jackets to accept goin on a trip.... just kidding

ahh thats not me welding! thats my roommate kris

my welding skills were all in a machine i loaded stainless tubing into with valve bodies then i did all the pressure testing an QA i know how but my hand welding is abysmal quality

the tailgate letters are painted from the factory its not molded plastic why not refresh them if their a bit scuffed

no paint today just took so much to fix the inside of the corner an then bodywork on just the corner

so on wit the show!

the hole just under the hinge mount up into the body thats the inner core behind the taillight an outside fender for your orientation

after much welding an grinding an cursing as holes would open back up is feexed!! corner is ALL steel parts are double thickness as they provided structural support an had rust in the layers we had to cut it out an replace it which is what took so much time

i put a coat of filler on an started filing it down i went over board a bit but thats due to the tiny rust dents an such on the side an the caved in part at the back

most of it all sanded off highs an lows all a lot smoother than they were

nother hit with filler an spot putty sanded primed TADA
coughs dust

yes the corner is part of the wheel arch an till we get replacement metal for that i really dont want to dig in an leave it wide open so stopped there

repairs to the passenger side much simpler cut out some rust in the seams an welded them shut patched a small hole below the hinge mount

now KIDS ID LIKE TO BRING YOUR ATTENTION TO A MAJOR PROBLEM
the world sees too much of this an its wrong an has to stop

SPRAY FOAM this was under my drivers side rock guard which i broke trying to get it off no worries i have a plan for that

JUST SAY "NO" to foam

bleh! took wirewheel to it FReeeippp!!! pOOF!

some rust bubbles under my rear carpet yay more rust
