Yeah you really can't beat the old Coleman stoves, and for some reason I really enjoy percolating coffee on one. I have a couple 2 burners, a single burner and a few lanterns. My buddy who own the blue Sears stove is a bit of a collector, he has hundreds of lanterns, dozens of stoves, and he's always buying. Half the fun of camping for him is pulling out the old appliances and firing them up.

The police stopped me once, because I did something similar than this, but not that extreme! You can transport stuff that way here, but they can't be longer than 1 meter from the end of the vehicle (local law). I was lucky that day, no ticket, I only got a warning, those cops were nice to me, cool guys.
Anyway, I don't know what amazes me more, those 20 sticks of 16ft baseboard in your T4R, or that dental floss you used to secure them!

 

You guys are cracking me up. I agree that twine is tiny. This was probably not a smart way to haul this stuff, but I did it. The guy loading it for me was very reassuring...he probably just wanted me off the property asap.

Going on a 350 mile round trip camping weekend with my 2 boys next weekend, so I did some routine maintenance on the 4ruuner. First of all, I disconnected the heater core and blasted the water hose through first the back direction, then front. I've never touched it on this truck, and I noticed one time in cool weather that my engine temp was higher with heater on than off. Just thought I would make sure it was not obstructed, heat had always worked the few times I've used it, so this probably wasn't needed, but I did it. Buttoned up up, I then ran it, with heater on high and rad cap off until warm, topped up my overflow and called it good.

While doing that, I changed out my idle oring. Put on the 011 one from HF oring kit. Seemed to match up to old one. Old one was so flat and brittle. After engine warmed, I set my idle to about 800 rpm. Runs so smooth for a 31 year old truck.

Then changed oil and lubed front end components.

While doing all that stuff, I thought I heard a slight rumble that seemed to maybe be ps idler. Very slight sound, and pulley looked slightly wobbly when running. Hard to say if that was cause, but it has never been changed to my knowledge. So I ordered a new bearing from Amazon. It was the 6204 LLU Nachi bearing. While waiting for that to show up, I took pulley off and cleaned it up. Wire brushed it, degreased it and hit it with some black Rust-Oleum.

Tomorrow I'll pop that bearing out and swap in New one.

Edit: Noting mileage where this was done, 194,000 miles.

Gotta love Amazon, 12.50 for bearing arrived next day.




First step is to remove spring clip holding old one in. Use a rag over it to make sure it doesn't fly away. I then used my press to push the old bearing out. A 19mm socket fit just inside hole in back of pulley. Here you see bearing had just popped out and fallen to floor.



Old bearing was almost certainly original, it was an NSK and felt crunchy spinning it in my hand. Part number of new bearing is 6204 LLU.



Pressing the old one in is a tad tricky. I used the old bearing on top of new one and used the press to get it most of the way in. Then I noticed that the old bearing kind of gets stuck a bit in the pulley. So I pried out old one with a screwdriver and then switched to using a hammer to gently tap the old bearing and periodically prying it out with a screwdriver. Repeated until New bearing fully seated.



And that's really it, put the back cover, spacer, pulley, bushing, front cover, lock washer then nut on to the spindle. The spring clip side of pulley faces front of truck. Tightened it up, put on belt, and finished up. I will say there is no visible wobble in pulley and I don't hear the rumble that I thought I heard, plus that old bearing feels crunchy so I'm really glad I did this.

 

Weather has been fantastic here in South Florida, driving the 4Runner a lot lately to kids soccer games, and out for ice cream and I've been noticing kindof a rumble noise when running. Back in April of 2019 I changed the PS idler bearing, and so I knew that was not the noise, my AC belt is not even hooked up, so it's not that idler either. With the engine off, I noticed I could wiggle the fan and get what looks like excessive movement in the water pump. Thinking back to April when I changed the PS idler trying to get rid of that rumble noise, it was probably the water pump making the noise back then. The 4Runner has about 195k miles on it right now, I last changed the water pump in 2009 at somewhere around 167k miles with a pump from engnbldr, not sure what brand he used to sell. Since I'm taking a road trip of probably 300ish miles at the end of Jan, I figured better safe than sorry, so I ordered an Aisin pump off Amazon for about $27.

 

Still waiting for new water pump to show up from Amazon, in meantime I cleaned up the pulley and painted it.


Also turns out that 3 of the 8 water pump bolts had some serious damage to the bolt heads.



​​​​​​The damaged bolts came out easy enough, but I just did not want to reuse them. Went to Lowe's and got some M6 1.0 by 25mm bolts, which match up perfectly.

Aisin pump showed up yesterday, new bearing nice and smooth and quiet.


I used red high temp rtv with the paper gasket, installed last night and let it set up overnight. All back up and running today, no more rumble and no leaks that I can see.

Some things to note, my water pump was not weeping as far as I could tell. My symptoms were a kind of low rumble noise at idle, and with engine off I could grab fan and wiggle it. New pump has zero play in it.

For all I know the bad pump could have lasted much longer, I don't really put a lot of miles on the truck. It's had less than 30k miles in 10 years, but water pump is cheap and easy and getting stuck by side of the road somewhere is not fun, and if I overheat the engine that's major.

My engine temp rose above half-way last Friday in cold So Cal freeway. Now I'm trouble shooting.
Mind checking if your coolant splashes when engine is cold and thermostat is closed like mine does here?

Were you able to replace water pump with radiator on? Enough room?
While you were down there, do you think main seal / oil pump seal could also be easily-accessed / replaced?
