so Joe and i were out already this morning trying to feel like we were accomplishing something.
since i'm really on the fence as far as how far to go with this engine, i / we figured we would take the timing belt cover off to see we could get an idea of it's age and overall condition.
from this point forward, I am the flashlight holder / tool holder / bolt finder......so Joe did all the work is what i'm saying.....except for loosening the alternator....me and the breaker bar did that.
timing belt cover off....meh....not so tough.....Joe took it , the radiator and the fan out

belt looks new-ish and in perfect shape

can see the water pump has been replaced.....sealer on it still looks like it was done yesterday

gotta shower up.....things to do, people to piss off.....so maybe later today (Joe) we will dig in to those injectors.

the more i look at this truck, the more i wonder if it was under water at some point......seems to have alot of corrosion where i would not expect it......i've seen corrosion on bolts in the dash etc and a ton of surface rust in these engine components just makes me wonder about it.

Interesting theory, Jerry! Maybe it got washed away in a flash flood or something? Otherwise, maybe the guy 'dunked' it, eh? Sorry to hear, .... I have a can of CRC Electrical Cleaner for all those connectors, etc., ... wanna borrow it?
hahaha.
PS> I grabbed a CAN of Dielectric Grease for 50% off at O'Reily's the other week.... good investment, ...I prefer it to the lil packets I've used before.
Looking good, Joe! Good work!!!

not knowing the history of the vehicle....maybe it was a coastal vehicle exposed to alot of humidity too???? who knows......no gremlins electrical wise except those induced by previous-owner-stupidity.

Ahhhh, ...well, could be. My buddies surf-runner(87 4Runner) is a rust bucket, lol. He's kept it well, but the salt from air and surfing sand is just relentless! lol.
Maybe he was a fisherman or boater?

body was near perfect except for rust at the tops of each wheel opening....otherwise, flawless. frame...flawless......
rust-wise, much better than my 92. much, much better.

Wow, that is strange. Well, could very well be he pulled out too far at high tide or something like that. Maybe dropping something in a lake, .....wound up sinking it... WHO KNOWS, EH? lol. Either way, get a lever-can of the Dielectric from Kragen and go to town on all those connections, after cleaning them up as best as you can, eh?

I'm just thinking out loud, but could you get a carfax on it? might shed some light on it's history.
It's really great seeing what you're doing here with your son. It's an expereince that he should remember for the rest of his life, and they are skills he'll never forget. Having someone with experience looking over your shoulder when you do something for the first time is a huge bonus, and it's even better when that person is your dad.
This thread makes me smile

my experience, is only quite recent.......but as analytical as i am, i feel confident in what we do.....so thanks again.
as far as CARFAX goes....i may look into what EBAY uses....seems pretty extensive although probably identical. title issues etc.....eh, not so interested, i was just looking for a service record database.

not sure if we are going to keep it white , or not.
the way it was everything was black on black on gray with oily dirt.....so anything we can do to clean it up and brighten it up so you can tell one part from another will be a help.

thanks CHEF.....
major amount of oil must have been constantly leaking from the passenger's side valve cover.....judging by the amount of gunk all caught up in there.
once again...ORANGE GOOP hand cleaner from Harbor Freight is the BEST parts cleaner there is.......cuts through the oil and rinses so clean you can paint right after...no residue.
