8T8 4RUNNER's 1988 4Runner Build-Up Thread

Hello, I have a 1988 4runner that I acquired in april of this year. We ( my dad and I, i'm only 13 ) have been doing all kinds of work. Here's a ( really long ) list of things we've done:
1.Painted all rear body panels.
2.Fixed rust on 3 out of 4 fenders.
3.Put in marine grade waterproof speakers on the rollbar.
4.Painted rollbar with duplicolor undercoating.
5.Painted bed with duplicolor undercoating.
6.Steam cleaned all seats and apholstery.
7.Painted fan candy apple red.
8.Put in new battery ( need new one again )
9.Got new performance radiator.
10.50 cal. valve caps.
11.Fixed rear window ( power functions )
12.Installed our own license plate lights.
13.New lugs.
14.New accessory lights on the inside.
15.New glovebox.

( sigh ) i think that's it.

Thats a goodlookn 4runner! should make a great project. Take you time and enjoy the work, makes ya appreciate the end result a little more :wrench:

8T8 4RUNNER 11-27-2009 06:51 AM

Thanks, the engine is next. It has a blown headgasket and a NASTY oil leak. We r rebuilding my dad's 22re, and he says we have 2 finish 1 project b4 we start another. His had a blown headgasket too.

peapicker 11-27-2009 06:59 AM

Your dad sounds like a wise man. Make sure to use new headbolts, and I dont know if you are aware of it, but its a good idea to go ahead and replace the timing set in the 22re. Those things are notorious for going bad.

Peapicker:
The timing chain job is what we r doin now :)

Looking really great!

My favorite time with my father was working on our 1987 4runner. Still have it, though its mine now, and I just work on it alone :D

Keep up the good work, and can't wait to see more!

8T8 4RUNNER 11-28-2009 04:04 AM

wow really nice work and its great your learning so young if only i was so smart..

my father too taught me about the mighty 4runner on our 87 that we had since new..
sadly i no longer have either due to rust/cancer but atleast i feel confident i can fix my truck when it breaks...

are your palns for a dd when you get your liscence or is it for a offroad beast??

92 TOY 11-28-2009 06:46 AM

****Dad will answer this one****

Daily driver or maybe not even that. he said he would be nervous about having someone damage it after all our hard work. So likely it will be a 2nd vehicle for hime (1st vehicle until he gets something a little less rare).

But, yes, we are going to finish the restoration to have this be a daily driver.

Doing our trucks is a new experience. Before earlier this year, I had a clue, but really no experience wrenching. In doing the restoration as much as we did plus doing a rebuild on mine, I / we feel much more confident.

Would be tons more fun if we didn't have to wait for $$$$ to accumulate.

Thanks for the encouraging words for Joe....he and his 7yr old brother are HUGE YOTA nuts.

It is a spectra radiator from JC Whitney. It was about 100 bucks and fit just fine. :)
