So I guess I am posting for motivation. I have been working on this build for a couple of years now. And it still sits, so I figured I would at least put up some pictures of where I am at.
Nice looking truck you have. It does take a while to get one done but looks like you are making a great start. Cant tell if it is white or tan but looks great and a turbo truck at that. Welcome to Yotatech.
Its awesome to see more and more of the turbo trucks/ 4runners being built!! what are the plans as far as the turbo and ecu? great lookin truck by the way!!!
Ecu is mega-squirt. Turbo is a Garrett .60/.63. And honestly I couldn't recommend a turbo on a R-series motor with a clear conscious. Huge waste of time and resources for what you get. Definitely better -time and money ahead- to swap in a different motor. I am looking at building an 84-85 single cab long be with a diesel swap in the feature. One project at a time though.
Thanks for the positive responses guys.
I guess I should put it out there. This truck has been on the road -over 10K- with its current ecu/turbo combo. It is just under the knife for a fresh motor. The motor build was "finished" at one point.
this is the current setup that i have that will eventually go in my 4Runner, I hear ya on the R series engines not being powerhouses but i figured what the heck might as well try it out and see what I can make power wise.
Nice manifold! I like the little support detail for the external waste gate. It isn't just the power, 150hp + in a yota is fun no doubt about it. The economy sucks, wear and tear is greater, the heat generated is unbelievable. I spent so much time/money/effort controlling heat with my setup. It is so much easier to swap in an engine worth putting a turbo on first, then going down that road. That being said I enjoy working on it and driving it -great learning experience. I just wish somebody would have smacked me around a little in the beginning and set me on a better path. This is just my opinion please don't let it influence you too much.
Thank you! It was a lot of man hours making sure that the whole tubular header fit in the engine bay without any clearance issues haha! As far as your ecu goes which one are you running? I was looking at the plug and play system that is offered by DIY but I still havent pulled the trigger on an ECU yet.
I run the PNP setup. It works well, but I think there maybe better solutions. Check out ToyotaHonda and 1project2many on 22rte-trucks.com before you settle on a tuning system.
I really like the Hondata idea and was working on that for my rig when ToyotaHonda did it. So many pro tuners are used to working with hondata it just makes sense to me. Really though, You did a great job on that manifold and downpipe.
Thanks Mica!! it was a fun learning experience, the only iffy part of the manifold that im worried about is the entrance for the wastegate, every where I see one is in the collector section where I placed it in the #1 cylinder tube, only time will tell if it works properly I guess. I am on the 22rte forum too but a lot of what I have seen is the megasquirt systems rather than any other stand alone system. The only reason I was looking at the pnp setup was for ease of installation. Ill have to look at those tho! thanks!!!
