Rear Main Seal

So I decided into my Rear main/oil pan leak today.

Got everything removed. Tranny out and down, oil pan off, and rear main/housing off.

One thing that I noticed right away was that the clutch was completely dry, No oil on it or on the backside of the flywheel. I totally expected to find everything covered in oil.

Before I removed the pan and rear main, I did notice some oil in between the crank and seal.

I upon removal, I noticed that the crank has a groove in it. I do not know how I didn't notice this before hand. Maybe it was the excitement of building a new engine. Who knows.

Anyhow here is a picture.

My question is. Should I get a crankshaft repair sleeve?? Or what do you think. Also, I think that the FIPG I used the last time did not totally setup, as some of the bolts I removed had FIPG on them that was not setup. And I let it setup for a few hours before I filled with oil.

Let me know what you guys think as I have never used a repair sleeve before.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Crablegs is one my favs!!!

I had a similar groove as well. I just took some red wool/brillo pad and gave it a good cleaning and the new seal covered it and worked well for me. I didn't know there was a repair sleave so took a chance.

You are making me hungry Terry. Crablegs! MMMMM

So you used a red scotch brite pad?? Its definitely a noticeable groove in the crank. It was not leaking so bad that the clutch was covered. It was dripping enough that it would leak a few drips upon shutoff.

So I started to tear a little further into the Transmission today to tackle the input seal leak.

Removed the retainer plate

Had a student remove the shifter and he accidentally dropped two washers down into the transmission. Luckily I was able to remove them with a magnet.

One question I have is to use anaerobic sealant or try to get the gasket that goes in between the plate and trans? I have some of the Permatex stuff

I lucked out on mine, so far so good as far as leaks.

Is the shaft loose on that tranny? If so hear is a thread I found that I eventually want to try on a couple of trannies I have. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...eekend-271102/

kornhuskerwizard...I just remembered today about the connections for the inclinometer. I was unable to find it. I know the runner I have in back had it. I will look again tomorrow. Sorry about the delay. Old Firt Syndrome kicking in.lol

Wow man youve been busy!! Hope the rear window relay works. i see you used the anaerobic sealer on the tranny thats what we always used on the GM stuff i used to work on, and if you notice it smells good too.So anyways i hope it workd for you and good deal on the kids mishap, if it would have been my luck it would probalbly be worse. I noticed your swaybars disconnected, do you do that for pulling the tranny or its just disconnected?? Just curious. As for the crank groove i didnt get a chance yet to look at the used crank i have. As far in as the groove sets in the picture i dont think the rear seal even rides on that area. Maybe its possible like we talked that your oil pan was seeping but did you say it leaks while running or while sitting not running??My oil leak is similar to what your describing but it hardly leaks and crazy but true its actually slowed down like its fixing itself. screw it i have other crap to deal with!!

Hey Terry i have the inclinometer hardwired for now, didnt wanna chop my harness.

hope the rest of the week goes well Mark!

Terry, The input shaft is a little loose but not too terrible. It makes a little noise when in 5th gear but not 4th. So I am just going to ride this one out until I can pick up another low mileage one.

Ive been dragging my feet in checking out this rear main. And I figured I waited long enough. I have to check and see how that anaerobic sealer cured over the night. I know that the front seal and gasket were leaking pretty good in there when I removed the tranny.

I talked to kelvin yesterday about the groove and he checked out a few of the engines that you guys brought back. And they have the exact same groove. Like it was machined in it from the factory.

I do believe that the oil pan was leaking in the rear near the rear main retainer housing. And was the majority of the leak issue. I am hopefully going to pick up the new OEM rear main and the Toyota FIPG today if this blizzard calms down!!

As far as the sway bar... It has been disconnected for quite some time. Actually i think as long as I have owned it. I totally removed it yesterday to get at the bottom of the timing cover so I could clean it. I think I will put it back on but want to wait until I can purchase some quick release sway bar links.

FIPG is actually what the fsm calls for on the oil pan, thats weird the oem toyota rear main was so loose on the crankshaft but the felpro was a good fit.hope it seals up for ya youve been fighting it awhile and been patient with it.motor still looks great.

Very weird on the OEM seal. 35$ lesson learned.

I hope it's finally sealed up. I'm headed to the shop today to see how it held up overnight.

And the relay fixed my window problem!!!! Switch works great now as long as I keep the added ground in the switch as per Terry's info

Very strange situation on the rear main seal. I decided to pick up an OEM seal. Big mistake that was. Actually a 35$ mistake. It absolutely did not fit tight over the crank. So much so that I could have fit a thin blade between it and the crank.
It was half the width as the felpro seal I had and fit nowhere near like the felpro did. Unfortunately I did not realize this until after I had already installed it into the housing.

Oem seal on left, felpro on the right (12$)

The inner seal lips wet a lot different also

Glad to hear you got your rear window fixed. It is an absolute pain for it not to work. Seems like when I need in the back all of the time when it isn't working.

Was surprised to see the Felpro was actually the better seal.

The functioning window switch in the console has me all warm and fuzzy about my runner again.

Really crazy that the 12$ felpro seal was way better than the (35$ at a discount) OEM seal.

So far...knock on wood... No drippy drip drip.

My hydraulic line to the slave cyl is a little leaky, but that's an easy fix.

I can't thank you enough for the window relay. It's awesome being able to use the switch for the window rather than get uo and put the key in.

Working on a truck for a buddy and had to get it over to the shop yesterday.

Had the trailer, and no way to get it up onto it!

Put the Runner to work. Had to put the old girl in 4low since the tires were spinning and sliding all over the snow road.

I had to give my buddy a bunch of crap since my toyota was pulling his ford.

Well, here we are a few days after the seal up attempt and it's dropping again from te back of the pan area when turne off. I'm starting to wonder I my oil pan is not messed up somehow.

I will say though, that the leak is nowhere near what it was before. Has a very very small drip.
