Build for a buddy. 2wd SAS 84/1st gen truck
#121
The guys are doing great and think they will enjoy seeing a truck in bare bones and how it goes together. Doing a project down to a frame was 20 plus years since school and for the first time. That is a big jump they are getting instead of doing it on their own. I had seen it done but was alway intimidated by it and this will help them way early then how I went about it.

Had the kids out some weight on it with an old engine we had laying around. Trying to get these shackle angles figured out. Still had the wrong angle with the engine set on it. Might try to get everything some to set the cab on it soon.

Still waiting on NWOR shackle and leaf pins to arrive. Been over a week and still nothing.

Thanks man. I really appreciate it. I agree, I always think about the knowledge I would have now if I was able to do something like this when I was a young teen.

Update #2 4-30-14
After we buttoned the rear axle up, we disassembled the front again to weld the tubes. It was funny because the kids didn't realize how many times you will assemble, disassemble, and do it all over again.
We got it all taken apart and moved over to where the 220 Miller is.
One of them decided he wanted to get a quick workout in. Nothing like some frame shrugs.

Got the tubes burned in. Set the miller pretty high to make sure I had good solid penetration.

Picture is not great on this one. But man was it ever hard to weld the outside with the body mount in the way. Especially with the larger miller MIG gun.

All done and painted with the front springs back on again.

Here it is as I am leaving for the day.

Tomorrow we are going to pull the engine/trans out of the 81 truck and set it in the frame to see where we have to make out Transfercase/tranny mount on the frame. We are going to make it out of the 1/4" plate that we have.
Also going threw a list of things together that need to be done as well
Rear brake lines
Rear harness that feeds the brake lights
Hook up the rear brake valve
Get a 2wd gas tank from u-pull it
Get a shortbed rear Driveshaft
Shocks front and rear
Repair the drivers side cab floor
Finish body work and paint cab
Figure something out with the steering.
We are nearing the end of school for the year and I want to get this up to the point where I can get it to my buddy with just a few minor things to take care of. Like fine tuning the engine, and interior, etc...
Also on another note. There is another student that is going this Saturday to look at a Reg cab 2nd 87 4x4 Toyota. Its so funny how many of them are starting to want these things.
Thanks again for looking guys.

It is looking like a 4x4 frame now. I am assuming that this is going to be a 22r truck. The gas tanks are different but you could easily convert a fuel injected tank to a carbed tank if you have to. It can be more difficult to find a tank in some cases. When buying a tank, really tap on the top part of it and make sure you dont punch thru. Truck tanks catch a lot of dirt up on top and rot out.
If it is really solid on the outside of the tank, it could be really rusty inside the tank. The rust isnt anything to be concerned with. It can be cleaned out so pay more attention to the solidness of the tank.

It is going to be a 22R engine. And the 2wd gas tank is shorter than the 4wd tank on this frame. By 10" I need to find a decent 2wd one or make a 4wd tank work some how.
Thanks for the advice on the rusty tanks. I will test out the tanks like that when I go this weekend. I usually have a hammer in my bag when I'm there.
