Hello bootscootboogie... There is only 2 years of these trucks and except for the 86-95 the other years are kind of few as well. Not sure why the 84/85 get overlooked so much, but when I first got on YT I really didnt know the this section existed or got into a one track mind and just stayed in the 86-95 section.
Dont get discouraged. Keep your build updated. In a year or more you can look back and see what you started with and where you end up at. Believe it or not, when you get done, it is hard to remember what your truck started out as. For the hundreds of other builds out there, how many actually get completed? Not many. Some get a Toyota and post a few pictures of it and that is about where it stops.
When I posted my 86 Runner, it was kind of embarrassing at first. It was bad, incomplete truck, mouse filled... Now I would trust it to take me coast to coast and some of the things I learned on it, when I go back thru and read what all was done, I really enjoyed the experience. You will get it done, just stay after it, it doesnt happen over nite.
Use your thread to keep track of what you have done. Post lots of pictures. When you find a thread, video, where to get parts or other information, post a link it your thread. I just recently used my 86 build to help re install the heater controls on a truck. I place my laptop out on the work bench and with some of the notes I had in my build, makes that a breeze for me to do now. You hear all of the horror stories of replacing the heater core. That is the easy part and nothing to be worried about, it getting those stinking heater cables to the way they need to be. I am eventually going back in my 86 thread and add more info on that just for the next time I do it.
Your thread can be a work tool in itself. When I first joint YT, I would see all kinds of information on how to do a certain repair but no pictures or other things to make it helpful. Now when I answer a question and post pictures, they come from my threads.
Get involved in others builds and they will get involved in yours. Doesnt matter how much or little you know. It helps also when you run into difficulty. I have only been to the main page for help and that is the Cherry Manifold issue and a painting issue. Everything else I usually get information from someone on here.

Hello cyberhorn.. I ran out of interior paint or would of gotten more done. I am liking the way it is turning out. I still have the dash pad out and will see if I can see what color the wires are that the lights work off of. I think it will be a useful option as I do a lot of driving at night.

I took my truck on a trailer to work to see how it drives. I still need to get it legal so used the parking lot to test it out. I only got up to 4th gear. Some good things and some bad things.
Good things.
While at a store I did have an offer to sell it. I want to keep it.
Got a few others to compliment on it.
Runs great and probably one of the most powerful 22re's I have owned.
Tranny sounds great, still havent got to test 5th gear to see if it whines.
Bad things.
Speedometer cable is not turning, may be broke or not seated correctly.
Raw fuel smell around the gas tank. grrr.. Will need to lift the bed.
Front brakes still not working.
Rear leak on drivers side. Not sure if it brake or axle seal.
Power Steering leak.
A couple of pictures did not turn out, but I want my shifter boot to look well. I use a wire brush and some soapy water to get the dead plastic off. Looks a lot better now.

Started to work on getting my SR5 Gauge to the way I want it. I am taking two junk gauges and making one of them. I will never again try to set the mileage on a gauge that has the hashmarks in the face. The needles break off of the splined spindle. Luckily I had two that I was able to piece together.
Here you can see the spindle in the bottom right of the picture. The needle is formed around the spindle. I used a two part epoxy and it seems to be working.

Just a reference for me in the future as to know which bulbs get placed in the gauge.

I use Turtle Wax Lens Restorer for the face plate. Works great and is a lot better then it was.

Here is the gauge with the hash marks. I set the odometer to 999999. I have driven it a mile or so but want it to read all zeros when I do start driving it normal. Gives me a 10th of mile for around the house and such.

All ready to go.

I don't know why I seldom get email updates from Yotatech anymore. I suppose I have to comment to stay subscribed.
Have you checked the price of SR5 gauges on eBay lately? If you wanted to restore a couple per month I bet it could make the mortgage payment for you.
I'm glad to see that Fox News thinks nice 1st gens are worth teens to twenties in price. They could have found a picture of a nicer example. I think I found a way to pay for college...

Hello Cyberhorn... If your 80 gauge has just the horizontal lines, those are the ones I like best. You can take those needles off. The hashmark ones the plastic is formed into the splines and I have broken two SR5 gauges. Luckily I have some broken gauges I have and can fix them. I am not so sure my oil guage is bad on mine. Luckily I have a broken gauge to fix it if is needed.
Hello Nervo19... I see alot of the things on ebay and they are way over priced. I havent looked at the gauges in a while but when I last did, it was shocking. I keep parts until they just arent worh keeping and some most wouldnt think to keep but probably could retire if I could get half of what they want for them on ebay.
I am not sure on the updates. I am weak in the computer things but have a few more options then most. Alot of the times I have to pass issues up to someone above me. They are currently working on somethings so give it a couple of more days. Wednesday thru Saturday is when I get the most done.
If the runners was to turn into today Camaros it would be great. I remember when you could buy first gen Camaros for a few hundered. Still one of my favorite cars. To bad you cant see in the future, I would latch on to a few more runners.

Not the most exciting update but it is a couple of more things off of my list of parts. It got down in the teens and I knew my battery was on the edge of being junk. Today it would not start as I had it sitting outside.
When I buy a battery, I always buy the highest Cold Cranking Amp battery that I can. It is overkill but when you get in cold tempertures that is when it pays off. Never been stuck in a parking lot with a dead battery due to tempertures.
I tried rebuilding my old calipers and they just werent cutting it. I finally broke down and bought a new set. Waiting on the brats to get home to help bleed them out and hopefully have front brakes. I have rear pads and slve cylinders but always have a tough time with those. I will get help putting those on. I have seen it done a thousand times and that is just something I havent been able to figure out.
2015 parts. Calipers are different colors but will be getting painted when I do the axle.

Trying to keep up with my expenses. This budget thing is for the birds but it is how I do it. The restore is not really the big cost, it is mostly everyday maintainance that adds up.
Spent so far.

Grrr... Kids got home and I still cant get the passenger front brake to grab. I have new calipers, pads and master cylinder on it. When I do a truck, I flush the lines with rust dissolver and air hose to make sure the lines are clear.
Got over the brake issue and was out in the shed looking for some other things and found a set of rear shocks from a parted truck or I got from a friend a while back and checked them and they are still good. Will get them installed tomorrow. One more step closer to it passing inspection. I will probably have to break down and buy some front shocks in the near future but once I get it legal and dependable I will start working on the other issues and getting things to where I want it to be.
Fresh coat of paint and I will clean the boots tomorrow and see what else I need to do to pass inspection. Lights work, horn works, rear shocks, glass will pass, exhaust will pass, brakes will pass visual inspection but still not working. I think I am getting close.

Hello Cyberhorn...I am getting fluid out when I bleed the brakes. It will shoot quite a ways. Bleeding Toyota brake and clutch lines has always been more difficult for me then any other make or model. Not usre why. I pulled it out of the shop and the other one isnt doing to much stopping at all. This truck has been fighting me the way on everything. Little by little I am winning but it still has been a battle. I will get a friend to see what is going wrong on it. New calipers, pads and master cylinder should have them working. I have gone thru alot of fluid as well.

Speaking of battles, one of my shock bolt mounts was stripped and at one time the front end was sat on the ground with out tires on. That bent one of the dust shields. Later on I will be rebuilding the whole front axle and those will get replaced. I did get the shield back into some what of a normal position.
Got the shocks on and they are better then I expected. They still have a ton of pressure and when trying to get them on the shock mounts took alot of strength to get them on. I just hope they are too strong as I dont want a rough ride. I also got the truck titled today. I did not realize the title had been dated and I got to pay the penalty of not titling it in my name after 30 days of purchase. Ouch!!! that was a $200 penalty.
I did do some trading and got my tan door panels. Will be getting them installed soon.

Hello bootscootboogie...I have a friend that has far more knowledge on these trucks then I do and am going to see if he has any tips on what can be done about these. If I find some magic cure I will definetly pass it on.
Hello Cyberhorn.. That was an expensive mistake. On on Toms Runner build I posted so information for you on the different door handles. They are a direct bolt on, Wahoo!!!

The left is a door panel is for the drivers side. It has a pocket but the passenger door does not have a pocket. The center pocket is for a second gen truck, the outer pockets come from a second gen runner.

On the back side of the passenger door panel, it is marked to use a second gen truck door pocket. The second gen runner pockets are larger. The thinner pockets just dont serve much use for me.

You will need to grind off the two longer post to mount these to the panels.

The pockets do have a narrow and larger end. I set the narrow facing to the front and about 3/4th inch back from the edge of the panel.

I use nails cut to different lengths to poke thru the panel. My completed panel picture did not show up but will post it later.

Finally getting around to getting my door panels on. We have gotten some snow and I dont want to mess with going to Joplin to get some interior paint to match the vinyl on the door panels and door handles. I will pick some up Monday and just mask off the things I want to cover.

Other door panel on. I still need to get my SR5 guage in but need to look into the speedometer cable.

Toyota uses different clips to hold the panels on. I actually prefer the white clips over the yellow myself. They are interchangeable but you need the clip out of the door and I will stock up on them the next time I am at the boneyard.

Why not make my 8000th post on another fix I get to do. My brothers says his head gasket has blown. I have not checked it out yet but it does sound that way from what he is saying. The orginal motor blew a ring and gouged the cylinder in this truck and he did replace the motor in it. Not sure why how he blew the gasket as he is not abusive on it but we will start on it Monday.
I think I may have gotten my front brakes working but I am not going to pull the truck out of the shop to test and see. Keep things nice and dry and hope the weather will warm up soon. The shop stove makes life great in the shop. Burning the wood up. Last year I got cabin fever sitting inside the house. Going to go look at my rear brakes now.
Head gasket, grrr.... Santa in the brown suit but he forgot to bring me any presents.

Have done some more detailing under the truck that I was unable to get to when I had the body off. Had to use a drop light to get a picture is reason for glare. I have a leak and am hoping it is either the slave cylinder or the axle seal closest to the drums. Those are easy fixes. If it is the seal that is closest to the third member, that is going to be a real pain and I will have to get help on fixing it as it needs a press. Hoping slave cylinder or outer seal. ( Fingers crossed)

I see alot of damage to these rear brakes and really no reason for it as Toyota has two bolt holes that you can use 12mm to pop the drums off.

I could of used a little longer bolt but this worked. They were froze on but the bolts popped them right off.

Where the screw driver tip is and around the edges, you can see where someone in the past used pry bars to get the drums off.

The top slave cylinder is what my 86 uses, the bottom is what is on my 85. I have gotten the wrong cylinders before. If you stick an 85 slave cylinder on an 86, it will work a few times and then the piston will pop out of the slave cylinder and you will lose all fluid and no brakes. I have been down that road before and it is not fun. Luckily I am able to handle a truck with no brakes at unexpected times. Just be aware of which slave cylinder you are installing as they will bolt up and is easily over looked if you are not paying attention. When I did the wrong part on my 86, I just thought it was a different manufacturer.

Got the drum cleaned and baking paint on. I will run it to the store and see if it needs turned or even replaced if it has been turned before. Does not look like it has been turned before but if it is not useable, it will look good going to the scrap pile.

Man your build is really motivating. I like knowing that other people just like these trucks for what they are instead of always chopping them up. Of course some are going to get mod'd out and that's cool. But I actually think of these as classics. You just can't beat that old school Toyota vibe.
