Thanks bootscootboogie... In the end I plan on having a really nice runner and this truck is going to be a real nice and rare truck, even if I have to make it that way. SR5, solid axle with as many options that the factory put on them and a few other nice things on it, but pretty much stock. My bouncing around days are over, I like a smooth ride and dont ever see myself in a Cadillac so this is going to be as nice as I can make it.
Hello Cyberhorn..On the front brakes I am sure it was the master cylinder. I am fairly confident on the rear that it is the slave cylinder. I think I dodged a bullet on that one. One of the axle seals is easy to replace but you sure make up for it on the other one as I dont have a press.
It is frustrating on my brothers truck. Not sure what is going on with it. I enjoy working on projects but working on daily drivers even though it is the same job, as something I do not care for. Projects are slow and easy, daily drivers just cant be down long. Daily drivers are frustrating. I can see this taking a week or longer as I have other plans already and I am sure ordering parts and machine shop work will take that long.

What should of been an easy job turned into a several hour job. Getting the drum off was a royal pain. The 12mm bolts stuck in the drum and would not come out. Finally got that taken care of and the parts I ordered are the wrong ones. I ordered them off of the internet and both the slave cylinders and pads are wrong. Argh!!!! I will just get some from my local parts store tomorrow.
Pain in the rear side. Before

Some more detailing I did and got the hardware cleaned and ready to go. I did luck out on that, that it does not need replaced.

$110 later that was unexpected, I got new shoes and slave cylinders, I also got the drums turned. Will be having a friend to help me install the shoes. I tried but have never been able to get them on right.

I did get the one broken stud replaced so made some progress.

Two days basically messing with the rear brakes and still not done. I will be having a friend to come over and help me finish it up tomorrow. I would read the book and compare to the other side and just was only a few steps from having it done each time but it was always something. The extra cost will set me back until next week or so on finishing up my interior for what I had planned but I should have good brakes all the way around when done.
Other then tires, ac, and the front axle I cant really see to many more major expenses left on the truck when I do get it going. There is going to be some bugs to work out when I do get to start driving it but hopefully nothing major.
Jason is coming in a week from now and if all goes as planned and the weather doesn't hold him up, we are going to be going thru his runner and I am taking a few extra days off for that. I am looking forward to that, it is always fun working with someone who likes working on their trucks. We will be doing his heater core and going thru it from bumper to bumper and fixing any issues we find on it. He has been driving it but still wants to just work out some bugs on it.
My step son flew in from Las Vegas and rented a '14 or '15 4Runner from the rental car place. I took it for a test drive and it is nice. Still comparing it to the 1st gen runners and it, no comparison. Name is about the only thing that is the same. Misty really liked it and for a daily driver it is ok but I don't see me ever trying to restore one of those 20-30 years from now. To complicated for me. I meant to look under the hood and might tomorrow but figure it will be a night mare seeing what all it is under there.
I am sure we will be getting a newer car or truck in the future for a family ride but I will stay with my older cars for me. I have had new trucks in the past and they didn't excite me when they were new then, just transportation that was like the other 20 identical cars or trucks on the road.

Glad to hear you're winning the brakes fight so far. Hopefully you were far enough from the freeze line to avoid the ice!
Love getting my how-to fix here.

Thanks Hab... I think I finally won it. I had a friend to come help install them and he showed me a trick or two that I think will work. I am actually looking forward to doing another rear brake job, just not on this one, haha. I was talking to Jason and he was actually stuck between me and you on 44. We did not get it to bad here. Im ready for spring.

Got my brakes on. I pinned each pad and was trying to work from the bottom up. My friend showed me to work from top down. Think I may finally have the rear brakes figured out. Got to work on why parking brake lever does not want to function correctly next. It has been a slow but steady battle. i spent from 7 am to 3 pm trying to get them installed, but I did learn a little.

It's the figuring out and learning that makes it worth it, doesn't it. Good on you!
I won't do him any good on this end of 44 and I'm supposing he was either coming straight from the east to you or in his rig but should Jason need anything when my way he should give me a holler. You too, of course. Will do what I can.

They had several accidents on 44 due to the weather and he had to wait for them to get it cleared out. When I was coming home from Joplin there was some more accidents. People are just driving to fast for the conditions. I talked to him just a little bit ago and he is now in Oklahoma.
I am fortunate to have patience as it was a longer repair job then what it should of been. About 7 hours, I should of learned something. lol

Hey Terry! Glad to see you are still getting a lot of work done on the truck.
Sorry to hear about the Head Gasket job.
I do agree that working on Daily Drivers is much more stressful than just working on a project.

Hello Jason...I am tryig to get it put together as much as possible. It is a little dusty and disassembled on the interior but hopefully I will have it together by the time you get here.
Hello Mark... Doing the same job on a daily driver I do tend to get things done a little faster but that is the reason I like projects. No big hurry on them. I seen you got to do a harness swap. Did that thread I create help? Any info I could add to make it a little better?

If my math is right, I just went over the $2500 mark on my build. I have been trying to keep track of my expenses and it is about where I thought I would be. I figure I have another thousand just to get it in driving condition, mostly tires and axle and another thousand for stripes, towing accessories, stereo and a few other things that I know will come up. New motor, clutch, brakes, windshield, and exhaust so am hoping I will have a dependable truck when finished.
Got another can of interior paint and was hoping to get the interior put together but I ran out of paint and left a seat belt at work that I was fixing and it has to go in before anything else so that held me up til tomorrow.
Headliner took more paint then I thought. Also I will replace it with another one at a later time as it does have a small rip in it. No hurry as it is not noticeable really. Besides I am in no hurry as quite a bit is required to install a headliner. All rear glass comes out and it would help having some clips and when Misty has time to help me with it.
Painted headliner pic did not turn out and will get one later.

I got the other panel painted and ran out on this one.

Hello 86 Toy...Just talked to him. He got out a day late which is only going to give us one day to work on it. I think we can get done all that he wants done. Will be a good time and his truck will go thru some major disassembly but nothing we wont be able to get back together. Friday we will be hitting it early.

Starting to put the headliner back in. Normally it isnt that big of a job but the headliner has shrunk a little and the back glass seal has expanded a little which is making it a little more difficult. On a back glass or headliner, from now on I will do them in the same day to avoid the difficulty.
Here I am using clothes pins to help reform the edges. Only reason I dont have my dash together is I need another speedometer cable. I probably got one out in the shed but it is 19 degress outside and it can wait. Nice and toasty in the shop though.

Mostly a reference picture for me in the future. The side panels go in first and the rear panel goes in next. The brackets can be used to help hold them all together.

These little clips help hold the headliner in and sit behind the window glass seals. Next time I am at a bone yard I am stocking up on these. They make installing headliners so much easier. These are factory.

I am using a little Dawn dish soap to help install the side and rear glass.

Where I dont have clips, I am using a drop of Gorilla glue and holding with clothes pins.

The factory uses a glue for the door edges.

Looks like a mess now but once I get the glass in, all I need is a little interior paint to finish the back piece and put a light coat over the rest of the brown to give it that fresh look, seats and carpet and the interior will basically be done. I am holding off on interior paint, carpet and seats for a little while longer as we will be doing some other things that will put my truck on the back burner for a few more days. It is that budget thing again, Argh!!! Oh Well, it isnt costing anything waiting for the rest of the parts and I can watch the repo man just drive on by my house. Once I get the parts, it will go together quickly.
The back piece is gray, once I get some more interior paint, I will mask off the glass and paint the rest of it. You can see I did paint the edge of the back piece just before I ran out. I knew I was getting low on paint and wanted to get to the very edge. It will look good when I am done with it. The seat belt I will extend out way past from where it will ever get used and it will match as well.

While waiting for some Gorilla Glue to set up, I thought I would try and find my fuel leak. When I took it to the muffler shop and moving it around the house, I get a whiff of raw gas. I loosened the bed bolts and then my air compressor seemed to stop working grrr... will look into that next, lifted the bed and did the fuel pump jumper. I wont post a picture of the fuel pump jumper here as the 85 and 86 trucks have a different way of jumpering then the newer trucks as I am using an 87 harness. I have a picture of an 85/86 jumper and will post it later.
With the jumper in, key on, it circulates the fuel thru the entire system up to the injectors. Not thru the injectors. I cant find any leaks so it has me wondering if it is leaking at the injectors when running. I cant see any leaks at this time.
For those that think changing a filter on an IFS truck with the access plate is difficult, the solid axles dont have the access plate which makes it that much tougher.
No Access Plate. ( No shocks either just yet)

Man those door panels look great, I'm still trying to track some down like that! Good luck with the fuel leak and headliner. Mine has a little tear in the back where the slider and headliner meet...probably from being taken out years ago.

Just started looking through your build thread today. That's one good looking truck you got there Terry! The interior is awesome! I definitely understand the whole thing about going over budget. It's just all the little things that really start to add up...
I'm amazed at how well your painted interior pieces turned out. I was able to land a mint condition dash pad not too long ago, but my interior plastics are pretty faded so I'll need to repaint them. I also have a brown interior. I saw in one of your pictures that you're using a dupli-color interior paint. What is the exact color or ID of that paint? I want to know what to buy when I repaint.
