westjohns 82 slow broke build!
#121
alright the past few days have been very work worthy, ive got alot if not most of the sanding done and i plan on soraying my base coat of primer here in the next few days when the humidy calms donw, my local yard just got an 81 in so im thinking of buying the round headlights and grille and all that and swapping it in, i love round head lights, also pulled the my rear end and giving it a quick reseal and clean up, i.e new coat of gloss black, bought a wire wheeller grinder at a pawn shop for 30$ and started grinding all the rust in my frame down, this thing has alot of pitting, anyone have any ideas to refill it in with metal? ive heard of silver filling it in but im not sure, the 81 at my yard has a decent bed, but the only problem is its been rhino lined over the entire bed and it still has a few rust holes, that stuff is going to be a pain to get off so im not sure if im going to jump on it or not, im still thinking of a flatbed, give me some info, also one of them members on here has alot of interior parts for me that ill most likely buy in the next few days so hopeflly ill be looking good!
#122
Sounds good, man! Josh, ... have you googled "removing rhino liner"???? Maybe it would be easier than you think??? Not saying it's likely, but worth a shot, no? For a straight bed????? I WOULD!
#123
i think it would be easy to remove but what i might find under it might aggrivate me, undeaneath in the bed was a few rust holes that didnt appear on the topside that was rhino lined, thats what im worried about, buying a bed thats trashed underneath some bed liner

I hear ya.... Too bad you can't find a clean one.... I wish you were out here, man... I could have called ya around 10 times now from Pick-Your-Part, or from my computer desk spying out CL.... , saying, "GET OVER HERE!", lol... Sorry, that probably just makes it worse, but you know what I mean I hope, haha.
Dang... Well, then you might have to pass, brudda! Hope you find one soon that's good to go(or just a lil work!)

its killing me curtis, this 4runner is clean, and its got brand new tires, its a turn key truck, plus with the money i have left over and the 85 axle out back i can SAS it, ughhhh!!!!

I loved my 83........

And I USED IT, plenty! lol... It saw a LOT of the Sierras/Sequoias in the 2 years I owned it..... MISS that truck, no doubt! ..................
.......BUT....... lol.... The second I ignored my buddies "Dude, you should grab a Long Bed 85 EFI PU like mine!" pestering, lol.... Well, it was HISTORY from there! haha......

I miss that one, TOO! YOU MISS THEM ALL, trust me,.... more than most of my hotrods, etc....it's bizarre, haha.... But the key is to be 'PRACTICAL', trust me, Josh... For my Buddy, he always insisted having a PU rather than a walk through was better... And the 4Runner didn't have that LIL extra leg room on long trips we would take through Calif.... But after a while, when he'd see me toasty while he froze(4Runners are WAY more insulated, etc.).... When he'd see me rocking out to tunes or reaching up to the radio or even up to the front seat to move it(we camped a lot in the winter at hot springs with our ladies or just the guys sometimes)...he was sold, and he asked me to help him find his first 1ST Gen. We got him an 86 Turbo 4Runner Automatic... He didn't like the auto at first, but even that grew on him. He just sold it, 9 years later, .......and he isn't happy about having to sell it, trust me!!!! lol.
Just be TOTALLY honest with yourself and then be objective... I mean, lots of it has to do with 'YOUR personality type', ya feel me? You seem a lil ADHD with this stuff, like MOST OF US ARE, including me, ... but you're also sounding pretty attached every time the thought of giving this thing up comes around..... So just decide, easy as that.... AFTER you weigh everything out like a logical man should do, right? hahaha......
1. Do I want a 'READY TO GO' 4Runner/Walk through' rig....
2. Or........ Am I sold on this PU and if I sell it am I bound to break my hand on something out of being SOOOO ticked off at myself?
NOTHING wrong with either... And it's totally your decision, remember that. If you grab a 4Runner, NO ONE is going to mock you or slander you as a quitter! lol.. (it's not Pirate, Josh, hehehe). Not that you care about that, not saying that... Just sayin,
And, most importantly.... IT'S YOUR MONEY AND TIME... and both are pretty precious nowadays, am I right?
Be objective and make a decision based on what's best for you/useful to you/gonna be more fun for your lifestyle/and remember, .... don't worry, in time, that 4Runner WILL give you plenty to do to keep you having a challenge now and then.... ASK ME HOW I KNOW? lol. Also remember, ...if you wait, ...they'll be another 4Runner(as there would be another 81-83 PU, know what I mean? )... But you WILL NOT get the time or money back that you put into this PU... Which, if you're enjoying this, DOESN'T MATTER, RIGHT? I mean,...it's a WELL WORTHY lesson learned/end product earned!
See? LOTS of variables... But once you really just are honest with yourself as to WHAT YOU WANT,... you'll make the right decision!
ME? I'd RIGHT NOW be looking for a 1UZ and a motorless 4 door or 2 door 4Runner to throw it in .........IF I HAD THE TIME TO EVEN THINK ABOUT IT! lol..... So for now... meh, I'll just be grateful when I find time to do the multiple projects I alreadyyyyy have the supplies for to the one I have now, ya know?
I'd LOVE to find a 93-96 Lexus SC400 to drive... READY TO GO, 125K miles or something like that... I could CARE LESS about building it myself.... Oh, of course, I'd add my own touches... But I just want one.... But, do I need one? ..............Again, ..."Meh" lol. I could have wound up with one for 1800$, COMPLETE, totally clean, LOW MILES! (My buddy is moving to France, could care less about it, wanted to be nice)... But it's Salvage..... IN CA? NO THANKS! lol... (Had frame damage and was fixed by a guy I know, one of the best!.... STILL, no thanks!)
^^^(I just throw that ALL out there for one purpose... to get you to be OBJECTIVE and HONEST with yourself... And, well, kinda drag you into making a decision if you can(SOLELY for your sake, Josh... I'm rootin for you either way... Just that I KNOW HOW HARD it can be to make up my mind... maybe you're the same in some ways.. So there ya go)
One question.... That last post of yours... Is that just 'random, fleeting emotion'??? Or do you REALLY desire to have this 4Runner cuz 'YOU KNOW YOU'LL LOVE OWNING IT/4RUNNIN IT?'...... If it's the latter... what are you waiting for? lol. (Just remember what I said, ..... "NOTHING is without it's own problems/issues/gremlins", whether now or a lil down the road! lol... If you're lucky... SURE, it could just be the guy needs the cash for a SOLID ride! BUT, ...if it's about the blow up in the eng. dept.... Would it still be worth it if it did? I mean, it's not new, Josh... no warranties in this game, right? REALLY check it over if you go for it, K????
S'all... I wont say another thing about it unless you ask!
hahahaha.
PS> Forgive me if that all seems out of line... NOT EVEN trying to think for ya.... Actually, that's EXACTLY what I DON'T want to do... I just find it helpful when people throw up practical, hypothetical rational, ya know?

Hahahahahaha... IIIII could have a talk show? I think you're episodes would beat me to it, Josh! hahaha.
Jk, ... Anyway, WOW, what a nightmare. Ok, so, now, .......... since you SHOULD be able to be objective about today and say, "Impulse buy or whatever it was... I CLEARLY am not attached to this PU".... right? ...........
I can't wait to see what's next! lol.

lol.
OK, you're probably not in a laughing mood.... and I CAN relate, lol. Not messed with that... But I did some fishing and found some MILDLY/maybe useful info. That's a common problem, from what I know... and most just yoink em and slap in an aftermarket drop drag link......(?????) I know, that's what I said, lol.. Anyway, here's one to start just so you know you're not the first.........

PS> Most seemingly say what you've possibly already heard... "DUMP THE DRAG LINK AND GO HIGH STEER!" lol. That's another prerogative that's fairly common when this issue comes up.

Are you going to be lifting this thing, Josh?
Are you planning on wheeling it pretty hard on occasion?
Are you a Sagittarius? hahahaha, jk.
Are you removing it for any specific reason? (Like, to get on an aftermarket one?)

im confused, run the bolt out of the end of the drag link and it comes apart? ive got a drop drag link from my 85 parts that im putting on, my stock drag link wont work, i did get my lift put on useing the stock drag link but steering sucks, mark its gonna be a DD and a few good runs on the rocks and few mud holes, nothing insane, thats why im not going hysteer, i have to get a ifs box, the hysteer, weld it in place, then ALL the power steering stuff because my truck factory was not power steer, so im sticking with the push pull setup i have, still confused on how to remove the drag link, also, if you see an sr5 wood grain dash radio bezel at your local yard in nice shape, grab it!!!! ill def pay for it!
