westjohns 82 slow broke build!

hey guys ive been here on this thread awhile now when i bought my 87 shortbed needing a motor and you guys have been a ton of help! just recently i found this 82 long bed pick, it has the 4 speed trans (not sure what its called, ill find out) the soild axle and best of all! its a long bed! the PO had a new clutch installed before i bought it and its runs fairly good, shifts through all the gears but bucks when its cold? never experciened the before. the bed has major rust issues but the frame is soild, i was underneath it for atleast 45 min checking everywhere i could for rot and its nothing but surface rust, the truck has 261k miles on it and it doesnt scare me, my first buissness is to give it a good cleaning and power washing, stripping the bed and getting all the mud and bs out of the frame. then ill prob do a full tune up and try and get it running even better. then do stuff such as an ifs box, maybe some gears and lockers from the selling of my dodge pickup i just aquired, if any of you guys have any first gen interior parts just let me know i need some, i paid 750 for the truck and he even delieverd ot, its got newer tires, and even came with a warn 8k winch, not sure if it works or not but well see! without further ado its picture time! http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/...febuary045.jpg http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/...febuary046.jpg http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/...febuary048.jpg http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/...febuary049.jpg http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/...febuary050.jpg bed is gone for sure http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/...febuary052.jpg http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/...febuary053.jpg http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/...febuary054.jpg oh yeah i forgot to mention, it even has factory air but it doesnt work, maybe something to review later on. :wrench:

750 is good deal, should be a fun build for you, look's like it's going to be a frame up build though. New flatbed maybe?

edit: any motor pics?

westjohns yota 02-12-2012 05:07 PM

yeah i thought about doing a flat bed but on a long bed i think id look funny, i didnt get any motor pics sadly, jsut a stock dirty 22r with 261k miles, and still rusn like a top :great: i do want a tube bumper though for sure!

1stnoob 02-12-2012 05:34 PM

I'll be watching for sure, whats your plan's first?

westjohns yota 02-12-2012 05:36 PM

prob just the general, gonna clean the frame alot, pull the bed, and prob do a full tune up on the motor, lash the valves, air filter, plugs, plug wires, etc, i wish this wasnt one of those trucks that was found rusting away in a weed line but needless to say it was... the frames soild and so are the floorboards, the bed is toast for sure, after all that rebuild the front axle, and gusset it etc, and prob a lift.

What do you mean the shifter rotates?
the tranny mounts went soft on my 83 and the tranny would bounce around alot.
i ended up swapping a r150f 5 speed though.
much better than the old beater 4 speed it had.

westjohns yota 02-12-2012 05:44 PM

the shift stick rotates in the cab, im not sure how explain it, it litterally rolls around l;ike theres supposed to be a pin in it, id prob have to do a video to explain it tommorow, its prob a bushing, and amazingly this tranny shifts fine, just wish it was a 5 sp

BoredOutnJackdUp 02-12-2012 05:45 PM

like it rotates almost in a circle while in gear?
because mine did that and it was a soft tranny mount and the whole thing was just bouncing around.

westjohns yota 02-12-2012 05:48 PM

it cant be at a dead stop and u can move the shifter in a circle it doesnt have to be running at all, i noticed the tranny mount seemed a little weird

1986yota4x4 02-12-2012 05:49 PM

you need shifter bushings josh, and when you told me the bed was rusty i didnt think the floor was gone in it lol, hows the floor in the cab?

BoredOutnJackdUp 02-12-2012 06:00 PM

well it sound like it could use the bushing that goes inside where the stick comes out.
and new tranny mounts haha

westjohns yota 02-12-2012 06:11 PM

haha curtis i know the floor is soild through out amazingly and yeah thats what im thinking, also need the shifter boot that goes around the stick, wonder were i can find one

1986yota4x4 02-12-2012 06:12 PM

really wish i woulda know u coulda used all those interior parts, had the boots, complete dash, and alot fo other parts that got tossed with teh truck :(

westjohns yota 02-12-2012 06:16 PM

its good bud ill find some somewere, the dash radio bezel and all that is like 100$ used! i was like holy cow and i havent found a shifter boot yet thats prob gonna be my other arm knowing my luck, first things first is a motor tune up and wash and such

1986yota4x4 02-12-2012 06:18 PM

i have an aftermarket shift boot if you want it

westjohns yota 02-12-2012 06:22 PM

westjohns yota 02-13-2012 06:30 AM
