cleaned it off with some IPA (isopropal alchohol) works great for cleaning stuff in the cleanroom I work in. picks everything up and dries fast:

used crapoleum wheel paint, got a couple of rims out of a can, so used 2 cans.
instructions say to do one light/dry coat than wait a little while and do a wet coat.
I did 4-5 light coats. feel the finish came out better than it did following the instructions on a previous truck.

still have one more rim to do...for a low budget but kind of time consumer project I am happy with the looks...especially since the finish on these craiglist rims was kind of crappy to begin with

Well Al I guess that is what makes the world go round. Different strokes for different folks. The good part is that here on yotatech people (like yourself) seem to be able to have differing opinions and not tear each other up over it. Which is of course a good thing.

I like the black wheels. But I like white wheels too. I blame BigFoot for that.

Index cards stuck under the lip of the wheel work great for painting a wheel with the tire still on.

I agree, I do some things that people don't like and I see some trucks that I wonder 'WTF were they thinking?"

thanks, Bigfoot, that is pretty good. I remember first seeing that truck in a movie "take this job and shove it" thought it was the coolest thing as a kid

Didn't think about index cards, good cheap trick. I was inspecting the brakes and other stuff so thought as long as I had the wheels off I would do the wheels.

Went Wheeling today

After of trying for about a year, finally got to meet up with Al (al's chop shop) and do a little wheeling. AL is a great guy, very helpful for spotting and knowing the local trails..Even helping me from flopping today
camera died early in the trip, had to resort to the cell phone

Nice action shots! The trekker looks even better now that it has some wheeling dents.

hey robb, that door didn't look so bad with some dirt on it... put it back! but man that trekker is even more SICK in person! it made my XJ look like a pile...

kudo's to you robb, for trying out all the big stuff, and doing it with a smile even after a little rock rash!

i'm sure you'd have made it up the mucky goo of canopener had the toyo's been aired down to the single digits. but ya gave her hell!!

Al

Thanks Al, it was finally nice to meet you in person. I am not too proud to admit a Jeep helped keep me from flopping

Next time I will drop the pressure a few more pounds...I think you are right I could have made it over that last rock..

Now if I can just get that idle issue worked out.

Yeah probably...Have a spare set from craigslist I got a couple of years ago..Al helped me so I could get the window up and down, that's all it needs for now...It was raining like crazy out there, head about 1.5"s

it was great to finally put all that stuff you sent me to use

busted some stuff

Guess the lack of strength of my L50 transmission showed up and popped something while wheeling last weekend...it has always kind of made a noise since I bought it 2.5 years ago...but finally let loose saturday morning with a couple loud tunks..

just in case I pulled the 3rd and checked it...looked fine, a 30 minute process of elimination.

pulled the dual cases...not good when part of the transmission comes out with the transfer cases:

clip is from the crawl box...

fried the input shaft (21 spline) and bearings,if you look close you can see the heat marks:

Size: 85.5 KB

4.7 box seems to be ok:
Name: friedinputshaft.jpg
Views: 129
Size: 138.6 KB

need to pull the cases further apart to check for more damage...but it all seems to be ok...and yes I checked the oil passages between the cases, no blockage...

truck is gonna sit for a while till I can get a new transmission and another case hopefully find a W56 or something cheap

i can't see how heat could have built up to do that kind of damage when wheeling, at least in the transmission side of things. you had her revved up pretty good on canopener but i can't see that as to generating much heat. all i can think is that if you left the t-cases engaged in gear (especially in low) when you towed it home, that would spin the trans gears extremely fast and could cook the bearings.

when i get back from the honeymoon i am dedicated to working on her toyota. i'm thinking a wrench-o-thon is in order. bring the trekker over, i'll fire up the BBQ.

and i'm diggin' the new avatar.

yeah that is pretty much the same conclusion I came to ...bonehead mistake... one trip i don't take out the driveshaft it bites me in the butt...haven't even touched the thing.
Kind of want to see what the trans looks like though since the oil in it was scorched but the tranfer case oil was clean...

either way truck is laid up for awhile till I figure out if I want to sell a couple of boomsticks or what...

Have a good time on the cruise!!

Great build!! Beautiful work!
I kinda cringed when I saw that door dent! Wheeling damage is ALWAYS good though. I am eagerly waiting for my first big ding
Keep up the great work and pictures.

I picked up a used transmission and transfer case recently to replace the one that took a dump on me...cleaning it up I needed a place to put the bolts and washers, remember that I had bought a magnet parts bowl at harbor freight awhile ago for like a buck or two:

thought it was kind of cool till I realized how small it was as I was grabbing a pop out of the garage fridge and saw all these magnets on the door...hmmmm

looked at all the x-mas cookie tins on the shelf, glanced at the drill.
had this a few minutes laterL

20 times the capacity with a lid...

...bad part is that is it a 4 speed but it was dirt cheap, seems (fingers crossed) to be in functioning condition and other than being dirty:

spent some time with a wire wheel and wire brush it cleaned up pretty good:

did not find any cracks or anything. I just need to get a reverse light switch (might be able to use my 5 speed one) and some rubber seals for the shift mechanism, i think I might actually have some...

now just need to get the time to pull out the 5 speed and swap the dual case adapter over...

need to get this thing back on the road and get wheeling
