Thanks Scuba, it was the shakedown run so no Crushers or Hammers. the other guys took some pics of me doing some of the hard stuff, waiting for them to get emailed. I got some stuff I need to check on the truck. Not sure about Moab, need to get there before they close the whole thing. I am hoping to take the summer of 2010 off so plan is to do some serious wheeling

starting issues now

Just got back from having the Trekker's emissions checked at Oregon DEQ for re registering it...Thing passed with flying colors, actually better junk coming out of the pipe than when I bought it a couple of years ago....

Now though I go to back the hunk of junk back into the garage, shut it off while I open the garage door and now won't do squat as far as turning over. All lights etc work. No starter contact, turning over..nada. so hopefully I get some time to chase down the gremlins and it is something simple

completed some misc junk

Did some misc junk today.
-Starting issue turned out to be a lose connection in the steering column with the tumbler. nice and easy
-DS brake light died a few days ago. kind of hard to see if you got it fixed by yourself so came up with this :

just a loose connection, picked this little connector kit up at harborfreight at their tent sale for around $5 or so...a great deal that stores an assortment that will fit in the trail spares box easy:

after using a rockstomper hinge kit found out afterwards that there have been some failures while on the road with them shearing off and losing the spare tire assembly on the highway
Plan is to switch to a double shear design (upper and lower pivot points) that would be much safer. So till that happens added a little 3/8" cable as some insurance...

-ugly but should give piece of mind till the swing out gets fixed.

Got a few more things done this afternoon.

A previous owner had put some 6x9 speakers in the back. They never worked so I had this in the back since I bought the trekker:

Brian-aka Waskillywabbit hooked me up with a deal on some 4Runner back seat cubbies (a perfect fit):

I got a good deal on a matched set of Montero seats awhile ago at a U-Pullit 50% off sale so I ditched the first set of jumpsets I had...doing it a second time makes it go a lot faster:

cut off the mounting brackets

cleaned it up a little:

My soon to be 12 year daughter tried them out, thought they are a bid more comfortable than the old plywood bottomed foam seat

test fit:

nice having a kind of matching interior:

tomorrow just need to make some brackets that will allow the seats to flip forward like a 4Runner.

Make sure your Nuts are tight

I have been driving the '81 around a lot lately since I got it back just because I can.
Anyway yesterday I had a vibration start on the way to work, I thought i would check it out when I got home. Got off work this morning and forgot about it, about halfway home, it was frigging terrible, than thunk at 35 i have to pull over and pick this up and put it in the passenger seat:

it came off at the transfer case end...evidently my head was further up my butt than usual and I forgot to tighten the nuts and bolts

just scraped up a little bit..The Big Guy upstairs was looking out for me as this was morning rush hour.
Pulled it and five minutes later back on the road
Tell you what though driving a locked front end in 2wd it sure pulls a lot on pavement but I got home after a few minute delay but do I feel like the proverbial idiot...

You are lucky, could have been bad.

It's ok for the driver to have some nuts and bolts loose...not the truck.

good save robb!

i've been keeping a look out around town, but haven't seen the trekker yet!

if you are up for it, i'll be going to TSF tomorrow. meeting at 'can opener' at noon to do a walk about with ODF for the trail adoption, but should be up there before and after that wheeling.

Hey Al:
Trail Adoption is awesome. I would love to head up there again today but just went up saturday.
Had the kids with me so did not too much. Just did powerline and cedertree..but it was still a good time. I am gonna need to swap to a flat pitman arm, spring seems to be hitting it at compresson sometimes.

Got up high enough to find some untracked snow, but it was pretty much a block of ice, surprised me though since it was warm..
