It depends on what type of driving your '85 sees. If its strictly a trail toy you might just weld the side gears to the ring gear. If it sees some pavement but not ice or snow a Detroit or Lockright might be right for you. If Its your daily driver and you have a snowy or icey winter you want either an ARB airlocker or the Toyota electric locker from a '96-2000 4Runner.

Read this article, Its about putting a Toyota E-locker into an '85 4Runner rear differential. Its the Locker i'm running in my '87 truck and its awesome. The pieces to install it came from a junkyard and Radio Shack (for the relays to control it) Total cost, $322 Call me the junkyard king. You can do a lot to make a Toyota better for trail running with cheap ass junkyard parts.

The trick is to put a rear housing from an IFS rig, 3" wider..
Then to go full bore get a V6 carier

I dont think any came with 4:88, just 4:10, 4:30, and 4:56. Also if your Toy is a 2wd pickup, then your springs are "sprung under" the axle, and the 4wd is "sprung over" the axle. That would be an issue

GEAR

Usually, but not always:
4 cyl, manual trans - 4.10
4 cyl, auto trans - 4.30
4 cyl, auto trans, FACTORY 31" tire package - 4.88
4/6 cyl, manual trans, FACTORY 31' tire package - 4.56 2wd pickup, springs are "sprung under" the axle, and the 4wd is "sprung over" the axle. This is a easy fix i have a MIG. Want year rear do i want .

BUT----the only years that came with the e-lcokers are 96-02 4Runners and Tacomas, and those gear charts do not apply to these years.

Remember that 4Runners with E-lockers have rear coil springs, panhard rods and control arms. I think the Leaf springs on Tacos are farther apart than on '84 -'95 trucks and pre '90 4Runners. A complete rear axle swap is possible but not a straight bolt on swap. You will have to make spring perches.
