I used to sell Toyota's when they had Diesels and they were wonderful!! You could buy a Corolla 5 door hatch back in the DLX packege with a 5 speed manual trans.1.6 LT. Car would get 65 MPG in 1984, you could also buy a Corolla with a DLXdr SDN with a 3 speed auto, it would get 60MPG on the highway, and 45 in city. They wouldn't set any 0-60mph records (unless it was for going so slow,) but they would get there and also would run at 75
MPH on the highway.
The Camry had a 2.lt Turbo, it would get 45MPG on the highway and only came in Dlx trim and a 5 speed manual Trans. The in town rating was 38MPG.
The Trucks only in a DLX = Hylux 4x2 long bed, 2.0LT. Were 36MPG HWY 29MPG City Speed trans. only They also made a 4x4 hylux in a 5 speed only MPG's Were 28city and HWY of 34. They did as they were abvertised to do. Every dealer couldn't give them away in 1984, They were some of the first Toyota's to ever qualify for a rebate.
If you would put a Catepiller in a Toyota you would have a very "heavy" from end in your Truck or car. Cat builds the heavest Diesels around.
The thing you have to keep in mind is that even a Cumming's was To much weight for Dodge in their first series of trucks.
Toyota has a very good line of Diesels around. They alread have a large truck line such as Buses and Dump Trucks, they already know the pro's and con's between Diesels. They don't need to go to a manufacture to comeup with a engine that will preform like they want it to.
Also the advantage of a Diesel is as long as the fuel will explode at a certain amount of compression. You have options for fuel choices. Have you ever followed a city bus around and you could swear to god that you were halucinating that the bus was smelling like McDonald's french Fries??? You weren't halucating, the bus was running on used grease from restraunts. Totally different for diesel smell. They other fuel that can be grown renuable is Soy Diesel, It wasn't wrong for Willie Nelson's Tour Bus. (well maybe it was the cops could smell the oder of burning pot comming from Willie's bus and he got busted) But you can see a load of advantages to having a Diesel. So you say where can I get the used grease to run in my Diesel and why would I want to. At 3-350 per galon of Diesel fuel, and Greese out behind your local Mcdonalds being take as much as you want it all free. I think you can see it wouldn't be long some of you folks could be using that extra cash for more accesories. for your runner or truck!!! I certainally would have a diesel. Check out the differnt web sites for alternatve fuels for diesel.... TJ

I have a TD. I have had a 4Runner for many years. I just moved overseas, Africa, and I bought a TD Prado. They are loud, but are more fuel efficient. BTW Does anyone out there know if the '97 LandCruiser Prado has an american twin?

Toyota Diesels are modern diesels. They don't stink or rattle anywhere nearly as badly as the 'Big 3' diesels do.
The toyota 1HZ and the 3B are considered to be some of the best diesel engiens in the world.
If I could get a Toyota with a modern diesel in it, I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Fuel may also be more money but you get 5-10mpg better out of it.
