Would you buy a diesel?
If toyota offered a diesal version of the 4runner or truck (in anyof the generations) would you have chosen it over a gasoline engine?
Just wondering what the market looks like, especially now that the jeep liberty is supposed to come out with a diesel for the US.

I more than likely would, just as long as it was around the same price as a regular gas engine. But even if it was a few thousand more, I think it might be worth it

FYI:
Toyota DOES offer a diesel. Even a turbo-diesel. Just not for the US market.
The '03 Hilux Surf has this option and the old 3.4L V-6. They don't have the V-8 or new 4.0L V-6.

For those of you who say "no" why not?

Steve,
I would be inclined to, given the (supposed) ease of maintenance, reliability, and mileage benefits, but the engine must not pollute any more than the current engine.
I am excited about the developments on the hydrogen fuel cell engines. Even if they developed something w/ the equivalent HP as the current 3rd gen engine, I'd buy it in a heartbeat---and I don't consider myself an environmentally-conscious person.

Thas very true... there aren't many desiels that aren't turbo'd anymore, but there is no way in hell I'd buy a N/A desiel in a 4Runner. You get the stink w/o the extra grunt. And there is nothing easier to get extra power out of than a turbo'd engine.

I'm a NO voter.
They're loud and stinky. I use to live in London and all too familiar with the smell of diesel since all the busses and cabs are diesel. Also hate the sound of a diesel. Chugga...chugga...splat... Plus, have you ever changed the oil in a diesel....messy bastards.
Just my opinion

whats wrong with you guys? i love the sounds of diesels. haha the one ford that i like is a f-250 super duty turbo diesel, just cause of all the power. 7.3 liters baby. but better yet, the cummins in the dodge. best damn diesel out there! drop one of those in your runner!!
i'd definatly buy a diesel over gas in a toyota. plenty of reasons why.. one bad thing is you gotta wait a bit to start it up. especially when its cold.

I definitely will be interested when Toyota brings their diesel out. In fact, when my 3.0 dies, I'll probably get a diesel from Canada or Aus and drop it in. I had a 82 VW diesel and loved that low rpm torque. Couple that with increased mpg and you're taking about a pretty capable vehicle.

Heck yeah I would have gotten one.
More power, higher MPGs, cheaper fuel, no spark plugs or distributor to mess with are a few reasons off the top of my head. I'd be first in line to open up the exhaust and make it louder if it would gain performance. With the money saved on fuel i'd get a louder stereo to drown out the noise.
If all the pieces fell into place right now i'd ride my motorcycle to South America, buy an early 90s double cab, straight front axle, turbo diesel truck; load up the bike and drive it back home.

Well after hearing all of you and and most are yes if they offerd one, I,m a no vote on that one.i work on diesel and gas engines every day with my job as a heavy duty mechanic . i work with chev and ford and izuzu and the famous british ford diesel and gas to. the diesels are great when it comes to mileage and bottom end torque,I,m talking about stock engines here. but when , not if they need parts for repair , HANG ON TO YOUR WALLET, cause there it goes . So the fuel mileage you have been saveing all this time just went out the window so to speak. You really have to way the pro,s and con,s before you buy.You just have to ask a mechanic that works on them. ford injection pump cost,s about $1100.00 compared to a gas fuel pump $80.00 ect.See what i mean. Thats just my experience with them. Just ask around thats all.

I know that the diesel is the smarter, longer lasting, more economical choice, but I think that I would still go with the gas job. I like the feel of the punch that you can get from a gas motor. As far as torque, I am getting plenty of it with the supercharger.
