5L! Going back a second, I thought the biggest Toy diesel engine was the (1HZ) 4.2litre Diesel or the (1HD-T) 4.2litre Turbo Diesel?

I have to say, I am VERY interested in putting a Diesel in a 4Runner. I thik the 4.2 Turbo would ROCK! Are you guys positive that is a direct bolt in to a US made 4Runner? Diesels rule!

I have NO idea if it will fit or not - and I've yet to find one for sale (outside buying a whole LandCruiser Amazon!) so I haven't had a chance to measure it up!

That 1HD-T looks very interesting. 118/3600 (kW/rpm) and 360/2100 (Nm/rpm). I haven't converted the numbers to American but that is some very impressive torque. This engine comes in a vehicle with torsion bar IFS just like the 2nd gen 4Runner although I'm sure the distance from frame members is totally different.

The 5L is designated as a 3.0 liter and its the current diesel in Toys. There is also the 3.0 liter 1KZ. These come in naturally aspirated, turbo or intercooled turbo.
Not a good pic but this is the intercooled version of the 1KZ and its numbers are 96kW @ 3600rpm and 343Nm @ 2000rpm
.
5L Intercooled
Don't even think about the Cruiser 4.2 as it is just too long and will not fit in a Toy unless you are OK with half the engine sitting next to you
Check out the 1-HZ I sent to Dave and you will see what I mean.
1-HZ
The new 4.2 direct injection intercooled turbo 4.2 is a great engine and its numbers are 430Nm @1800rpm and 151kW @3400rpm. A diesel with HP as well as grunt

JD what would it cost to get a 5L intercooled engine to the states? A couple of us are interested in converting our 3.0 petrol engines. Also - I've read that this engine will bolt to the R150F transmission we have but what else is necesary - motor mounts - moving battery, etc? I'm probably about a year away from buying one and would love to do this swap over the 3.4 v6.

I did get a costing of a "complete" 1KZ turbo at a wreckers not long after they were just released. But being the newly released engine it wasn't cheap but that included everything in the engine bay etc. I think it was around $US6000 and it was virtually new.
They may be a little cheaper now as they should be more readily available in wreckers.
It comes bolted to the R151F so you can use a R150F.
My suggestion would be to maybe consider a naturally aspirated 5L as shown in the Hilux pics first off as it would be a lot less complicated to install and cheaper. Then maybe later funds permitting add an aftermarket turbo kit, which are available and very simple to install.

If this had of been asked about 6 months ago I would of more than likely said no, but my dad just went and got him a diesel truck and he chunked me the keys over the weekend. DAMN i think I need to go ahead and do a engine swap or something. So I guess my options are: A) I want One, B)Eye want 1, or C) see A & B!!!

If anyone can build a good diesel it is Toyota. Imagine 28-30mpg and 300,000 mile service intervals and all the torque you could ever need.
I would but a diesel toyota in a heartbeat!

HILUX SURF Engine in Japan
Here is a picture (attached) of the diesel turbo available on the 03 Surf's here in Japan along with the specs from the Toyota Japan website. I'm sure one of you can convert the metric specs to horsepower/ft lbs torque:
Displacement:2.982L
Maximum Power (NET):125kW (170PS) / 3,400 r.p.m.
Maximum Torque (NET):352N.m (35.9kg.m) / 1,400〜3,400 r.p.m.
*1. LASRE:Light-weight Advanced Super Response Engine
*2. コモンレール式直噴ディーゼルターボ (Common Rail Diesel Turbo)
*3. UNIBUS:Uniformed Bulky Combustion System
For Comparison, here are the specs for the 3.4L gasoline model which I have. I was going to go with the diesel when I bought mine in January but I could'nt see spending the extra almost 3K for the diesel.
Displacement:3.378L
Maximum Power (NET):136kW(185PS) / 4,800 r.p.m.
Maximum Torque (NET):294N.m(30.0kg.m) / 3,600 r.p.m.

I voted for diesel. I love the sound of those! If I could find a '94-'02 Dodge Ram with a Cummins diesel, manual, 4x4, ext cab, and long bed for a good price, I would really check it out. Get an exhaust and a Jake brake put on it. That would be awesome! Maybe sell my 4Runner for it.
That 5L sounds sweet though. I saw a Toyota 3.4 diesel on ebay a couple of days ago. I think the bid was at $1400 or something. I didn't know they made a 3.4 diesel.
However, if I had to chose between a 3.0 diesel or a 3.4 with a S/C, I may go with the latter. I would go with a 5L diesel over a S/C 3.4 though.
That's my thoughts on that.
Have fun all.

Acually, I did make a goof last night (late, LOL). The 5L (2986cc) and the 1KZ (2982cc) are different engines and I have corrected my posts, LOL.
The base 5L is 71kW @ 4000rpm and 200Nm @ 2600rpm (DIN).
Safari make a turbo for these deisels and going by this PAMPHLET you can expect a 37% increase etc.
The 1KZ turbo is 85kW @ 3600rpm and 315Nm @ 2000rpm (DIN).
The 1KZ intercooled turbo is 96kW @ 3600rpm and 343Nm @ 2000rpm.
So if Safari's 37% is correct then a base 5L with a safari turbo will be 97Nm which is equal to the bells and whistles 1KZ intercooled turbo.
These alternatives are worth looking at and doing the sums at the time etc as its possible a base 5L with a safari turbo kit may be a lot cheaper than the bells and whistles 1KZ.
Also the 5L is the current engine and it would be a lot easier to find a low mileage unit eg, both the 5L's in the page I posted were under 20,000klms so they are still virtually new.
