Would you buy a diesel?
#241
I did some work this summer at a platinum/palladium mine that uses diesel toyotas, that look similar to an fj. I talked to their head mechanic and he says that they pay roughly $65K each!!! I cant remember if they got them direct from toyota or if someone else supplies them.
Bottom line: they had a lot full of busted and smashed parts that I was drooling over every time I would go past. I figure that if you took about three mostly in tact wrecks you could have one sweet diesel toyota...

I work at a Toyota dealer, and I was talking to a guy who designs engines over here in Erlanger KY. He said they are working on a Diesel Toyota motor, borrowed from Hino. He said it will go in the new 3/4 ton Tundra. I forgot to ask him when it is coming though
Maybe I'll see him again and ask.
He also said a gas/electric Tundra is currently in the works.

Not me.
For one, the prices for diesel have gone up way too much for my personal tastes (well, so has gas) where it is about 3.23/gallon and 2.77/gallon for gas. Another thing that I do not like about them is the noise. Not only for others on the road, but the noise on the inside as well. I know the newer diesels (or vehicle in general) are quite quiet inside the cab, however, the diesel pickups that I have ridden in are still too noisy. My last complaint is the pollution that they cause. Call me a greeny if you will, but I would rather breath clean air for a few more years of my life, and maybe allow my children someday to do so as well. Not only that, but the exhaust smells really bad.
I know the benefits of mileage, power, and other things, but I would rather just stick with my good old gas engine.

On a side note...
The next generation of diesels will be not only smokeless but also scentless. Only company to rise to the challenge so far (from what I have read which is relatively limited) is International.

Back in the day more smoke equaled more power in diesels, but now the electronics that gasers had since the late sixties/early seventies started to show up in the early ninties making the diesel much more efficent and better emmissions wise. Overseas the toyota dealers do a test called the white glove test where the salesmen puts on a white glove and places his hand over the tail pipe while the customer revs the engine, the customer gets out and the salesmen shows them the white glove that is still clean.
As far as petrodiesel is concerned, yes it is getting to be expensive. The good thing about the diesel engine is that it can run many different fuels: biodiesel (about 90 cents/gal), Straight Vegatable Oil (SVO) including; soy, peanut, sunflower and so on, and Waste Vegatable Oil (WVO). Where as gasers can run on...gas. Remember the original diesel ran on peanut oil and the theory of whats is name Diesel was the farmers could produce their own fuel for thier tractors so that they could be self sufficent.

Diesel can be just about the greenest vehicle on the road when fueled as Dr Diesel intended, instead of filling up with the byproducts of the gasoline industry

I too would buy a Diesel in a minute, especially in a truck or 4X4. They kick the hell out of a gas engine for torque. As for a Diesel powered race car...umm I'd go gas. They both have their uses. Diesel was originally made for farmers to be able to burn peanut oil that they themselves could produce cheaply. Not to mention that you can make your own Bio-Diesel and save even more money!! And BTW, the Jeep Liberty already is running a 2.0L CRD here in Canada, they offered it this year.

Here's a link to an importer of Japanese Toyota's. I don't think they can be imported into the states though. Really nice selection, and super low mileage.

The sucess of the Liberty CRD proved that a Grand Cherokee diesel is OK in America. We'll get one I guess in 2008.

I would definately buy a diesel engine if toyota offered one....torque, gas mileage, power, ease of maintenance, diesel is cheaper than regular gas!!!, reliability (if you think your 22re is reliable...you dont even know!!) And that black smoke is awesome...
If yall want stink you should ride behind me on the road. My truck is a gas engine and it smokes just like a diesel, under throttle, I might as well be driving a diesel. I am going to hate not having any smoke once I get my new engine!!!!
BTW it smokes cause it burns oil, and runs rich!!

I don't know why the Fords and Dodge diesels need to be so loud. They're louder than a big truck. Annoying.
We have two diesels. An HJ60 Landcruiser (left hand drive) and a Mercedes 320E Turbo diesel. Love em.

Not that cool! Yes, diesels have problems at lower temps (below freezin') but I allways put a few liters of gas in everytime I filled the baby up. That prevents the diesel from clogging. That cures the problem without any problems for the engine. 10% mix is easily possible without effecting engine performance.
I you have a lot of below feezin' temperatures Toyota will probably have provided a stock fuel heater on the car. Or you can fit one yourself.

Didn't read all the posts but I want a diesel Tacoma.
Diesels were designed to burn bean oil, not diesel. They were designed to be a cleaner internal combustion engine than the gasoline engine, but when oil was cheap, burn the cheap stuff.
I wouldn't burn bio-diesel but I would run the Bean. The local coop will deliver to my house in 100 gallon increaments and bean can be mixed with diesel at any percentage with no problems. Bean oil does not smell like french fries as it is 100 percent clean and has no power limitations. In fact runningbean oil increases fuel economy. Right now bean oil is slightly less than diesel but the brownie points for running a greener truck are huge.
Turbo charged diesel. I'm going to import one if they are not available yet.

We used to have a diesel, it was from a 96 GMC and was turboed. Do new diesels spew black smoke durring WOT? Becuase this thing ran nice and clean except for durring WOT There was more black smoke than you could shake a stick at. Have they found a way around this now?
