i LOVE a nice clean 1st gen, 3in lift, 33's... perfect!
now... the 3rd gen is the sexiest after that
2nd gens just plain, uhm, are plain? and the 4th gen, well... leaves ALOT to be desired. almost makes you want a raised highlander in comparison LOL

The poll of what gen people own and what gen people love is almost the same so I guess most of us own what we wanted.

I'd have to say:

1) 3rd gen
2) 2nd gen
3) 1st gen
4) 4th gen

I like the 2003 DC Lunar Mist TRD 4x4 with.... oh, sorry - that's my Taco!

Seriously, I think my favorite is the 3rd gen, with the 1st right on it's tail. (IMHO)

Things that excite me:

265+ hp supercharged V6
5-speed manual transmission
factory locking rear differential
11 inches of ground clearance

Only the 3rd gen offers these features. I think the 3rd gens also happen to be the best looking.

Yes, I agree. I like the cleaner look of the 3rd gen without the thick fender flares found on the limited edition.

That's why I wanted a '99 Sport since by 2000 they got the wider painted flares. 3rd gens have the modern comforts but still have the best IMO overall off roadability when equipped with the factory locker.

eventho i have a 2nd gen my vote goes 4 the 1st gen due to the awesome removable hard top and they were made in 85 (last for solid axle/first for EFI) what more could you really ask 4?

I've owned two 1st gen., an '89, and currently an '85. I first fell in love with the 4Runner when I saw the movie "Over the Top", with Sylvester Stallone. Remember- the little kid steals the 1st gen. 4Runner (topless) & drives to the airport? I knew then, I had to have one. I would love to get a 2nd gen. as a tow vehicle, but I would have to check the towing capacity.

3500lbs for the 2nd gen man...I would get a 3rd gen (5000lbs) or a Tundra (6000lbs I believe), that way you've got a really nice DD and also a tow rig.

Sorry...that was off topic.

I've already voiced my opinion in this thread, 3rd gen all the way!

Even though it rusted-out quickly, Id going with the 1st Gen.
I had an '85 4Runner SR5 and that thing was a beast. Solid front axle, manual locking hubs, manual transfer case (no electronics) and a factory clinometer. How many 4x4s have all that going for them? The supposed, "trail rated" Jeep aint gont nutin' on a 4Runner!

It's too hard to choose. I like 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gens. The 4th gen is just another SUV but still sorta cool.

I have had a 2nd gen, and now a 4th...my mom has a 3rd.. The 4th spanks the 3rd...the 3rd is better is some ways than the 2nd...but you can beat a 2nd...the only reason i went from a runner to a truck was too much sheet metal and glass for the trail....i'd spend more money on that stuff than mods....

I have a 3rd gen, but I have always like the body style of the 2nd much better. I think because it shares so much with the Taco, wheras with the 3rd it got away from the truck style, and the 4th, hey, not my favorite.

A 4th gen would be nicer for a DD but off road they are too new to still look good with a little dings and scrapes and the missing ground clearance and rear locker will keep me appreciating my 3rd gen for a while longer.

2nd Gen 4runner. 1990 SR5 V6 With Factory rear tire carrier no stupid running boards. All Go no Show. I am biased of course as I am the very proud owner of a 1990 sr5 v6 4runner
