there will never be another 1st gen, i love em..but i own a 2nd, which i love. back before the family id have to go w/1st, but my 95 can do asmuch as a 1st, and haul the wife/kid round in comfort and quiet.

I also voted for 1st gen because I have had a couple of them and prefer them, but have a 2nd gen at the moment.

I have an 85 1st gen, its my second 85, but the 3rd gens are such a clean looking vehicle, if they came with a V8 i'd buy one in a second. Oh and 4th gens are ugly.

I think the best would be if they mixed the 2nd gen and 3rd gen body style b/c it would look both tough and luxurious

3rd gen hands down.
I dont think the 4th gen will ever grow on me.
2nd was a good platform to the end result( 3rd gen)
1st gen are cool. Takes me back to the Jeep days.

I like the body style of the second generation the best(currently have a 95)but want to go to a third generation for the increase in performance.

The combination of the 1st gen and 2nd gen is really sweet. But over all I like the 1st gen the best. Thats why I held out for one. Having the removable top makes you feel less confined.

They are all great but for me the 3rd gen and the first gen are far and away the best. Specifically an 85 solid axle 1st gen and a 3rd with the e-locker or at least the center locker.

even though they are toyotas they wont last forever. So what are people gona do years down the road when they come down to the newest options. A 4th gen strictly trail-rig!!! just can't see it happening well I guess maybe toyota will have it figured out by then. The sturdy 1st gen and P/u's made toyota what it is. To bad they cant make some 85's again solid axle and all and sell them new for say... 5 grand. man that would be awesome.

The only way I'm able to deal with this is to have one of each (1-3) I'm too poor to have a G4. I think the G1 is cool and spartan, the G2 is the sexiest, the G3 is nicely refined for its era, and the 3.4 is a great powerplant. Newer than that and i'm outta the loop I'm afraid...

I'm glad I found this thread - lots of great posts. There was a similar debate to this on another forum. I've had a 2nd gen and a 3rd gen 4 Runner in my past (currently in a Tacoma), and I have to go with the 3rd gen for styling, power and performance. I loved my 2nd gen, but that 3.0 V6 was vastly underpowered for the Colorado high country. I had to drop my 5 spd down to 3rd on the interstate to climb some of the passes.

I hated the 4th gen at first, but it's starting to grow on me. The minor styling changes in 06 were an improvement.

I have the 'O6, good power better look than the stupid squared off fender wells of prior years. Hate the stupid dial 4WD (why can't there be a lever damnit!). Do like having cup holders! LOL!! How come the top of the line model in 1986 had power everything but no cup holders? Ah well, atleast there's a lever!!!
